Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clean Coal Engineering Technology, Second Edition provides significant information on the major power generation technologies that aim to utilize coal more efficiently, and with less environmental impact. With increased coal combustion comes heightened concerns about coal’s impacts on human health and climate change, so the book addresses the reduction of both carbon footprints and emissions of pollutants, such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and mercury. Part 1 provides an essential grounding in the history of coal use alongside coal chemical and physical characteristics, worldwide distribution, and health and environmental impacts. Part 2 introduces the fundamentals of the major coal utilization technologies and examines the anatomy of a coal-fired power plant before going on to provide an overview of clean coal technologies for advanced power generation. Next, users will find a group of chapters on emissions and carbon management that have been extensively enlarged and updated for the second edition, thus reflecting the ever-increasing importance of this area. The final section of the book focuses on clean coal technology programs around the world and the future role of coal in the energy mix. This fully revised and selectively expanded new edition is a valuable resource for professionals, including environmental, chemical, and mechanical engineers who seek an authoritative and thorough one-volume overview of the latest advances in cleaner power production from coal. Provides a thorough, yet readable, one-volume guide to advanced power generation technologies for cleaner electricity production from coal Retains the essential background information on coal characteristics and the fundamentals of coal-fired power generation Presents extensively expanded and updated coverage on technologies for the reduction of pollutants, including particulate matter, sulfur oxides, and mercury Emphasizes carbon capture methods, storage, and emerging technologies for the reduction of carbon footprints, alongside a discussion of coal’s future in the energy mix

Book Synopsis The Coal Handbook: Towards Cleaner Production by : Dave Osborne
Download or read book The Coal Handbook: Towards Cleaner Production written by Dave Osborne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal remains an important fossil fuel resource for many nations due to its large remaining resources, relatively low production and processing cost and potential high energy intensity. Certain issues surround its utilisation, however, including emissions of pollutants and growing concern about climate change. The coal handbook: Towards cleaner production Volume 2 explores global coal use in industry. Part one is an introductory section which reviews the social and economic value of coal, emissions from coal utilisation, the handling, impact and utilisation of coal waste, and an exploration of emerging and future issues around industrial coal utilization. Chapters in part two highlight coal resources, production and use in established markets as well as the emerging markets of Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, Indonesia, and China. Part three focuses specifically on coal utilisation in industry. Chapters consider thermal coal utilisation, coal use in iron and steel metallurgy, advances in pulverised fuel technology, and the evaluation of coal for thermal and metallurgical applications. Further chapters explore coal utilisation in the cement and concrete industries, coal gasification and conversion, and value-in-use assessment for thermal and metallurgical coal. A final chapter summarises the anticipated future pathway towards sustainable, long-term coal use, suggesting transitions that will be needed to ensure cleaner utilisation for many decades to come. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, The coal handbook Volumes 1 and 2 is a comprehensive and invaluable resource for professionals in the coal mining, preparation, and utilisation industry, those in the power sector, including plant operators and engineers, and researchers and academics interested in this field. Reviews the social and economic value of coal, emissions from coal utilisation, and the handling, impact and utilisation of coal waste Explores emerging and future issues around industrial coal utilization Highlights coal resources, production and use in established markets, as well as emerging markets such as Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, Indonesia, and China
Book Synopsis Portfolio Evaluation of Advanced Coal Technology by : Ayaka Naga-Jones
Download or read book Portfolio Evaluation of Advanced Coal Technology written by Ayaka Naga-Jones and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) (2) All projects have been fully funded up front, which saved worries about project funding prospect and enabled performers to concentrate on project implementation; (3) The well-defined program goal and funding commitment from federal government has encouraged industrial participation. As a result, industry has shared more than 50% of the programs cost with new money; (4) The DOE share of project cost growth was capped at 25%, which has incentivized industry to be more cautious about project risk; (5) Industry was authorized to design, build, operate and own facilities, which made full use of industry expertise and resources; and (6)In general, the program created a degree of competition for a range of technologies, which has helped hedge the program risk. Notwithstanding the achievements, some problems exist in these programs, of which the major ones are: (1) imbalanced RD & D structure caused by gaps in high efficiency combustion, application of modeling and simulation in ACT R & D, under-investment in basic research and applied R & D, insufficient university and national laboratory participation in R & D programs, and weak international collaboration, especially that with China.

Book Synopsis Clean and Efficient Coal-fired Power Plants by : Heinz Termuehlen
Download or read book Clean and Efficient Coal-fired Power Plants written by Heinz Termuehlen and published by American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the evolution toward advanced coal-fired power plants. Advanced power plants with an efficiency level of 45% are today commercially available and even more efficient plants are in their development phase. Considering that presently many pulverized coal-fired power plants operate with an efficiency of about 32%, an improvement of more than 40% specific coal consumption and CO2 discharge can be achieved. Before trying to apply as a secondary measure the use of carbon sequestration, it seems that this 40% specific CO2 discharge reduction as a primary measure can much easier be achieved. The effect of power generation on the environment can be drastically improved by the use of flue gas cleanup systems in advanced pulverized coal-fired power plants (SO2 emission reduction from 40 to 1.4 lb/MWh and NOx emission reduction from 7.5 to 0.64 lb/MWh). With an increased number of coal-fired plants, CO2 discharge and emissions can be reduced, even with an increase of electric power generation in the US by 38% over the next 20 years. Even though the book concentrates on pulverized coal-fired power plants, it also discusses and compares other options like fluidized-bed combustion and coal gasification.
