Book excerpt: This paper presents a methodology based on deflection basin parameters and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for processing dynamic falling weight deflectometer (FWD) measurements to estimate layer moduli and condition. Two-dimensional, dynamic, finite element analysis using the ABAQUS program was employed to develop the deflection information for this study. Unlike the majority of the existing backcalculation programs that iteratively adjust all the layer moduli to match the measured deflections, the proposed method first determines the subgrade modulus by means of two deflection basin parameters, Base Damage Index and Shape Factor F2, and then applies the estimated subgrade modulus and other parameters as input variables to a trained ANN to estimate the upper layers' moduli. Procedures in predicting layer moduli for both two- and three-layer pavement systems are presented. Field FWD measurements were analyzed both by this method and by the MODULUS program, the results of which assess the capability of the proposed method. Effects of discontinuities in the asphalt layer on the resulting FWD deflections were also studied using the finite element method. It was discovered that distresses in the asphalt layer may be detected using two deflection basin parameters, Shape Factor F2 and AREA.

Book excerpt: This study utilized Illinois DOT (IDOT) mechanistic-empirical (M-E) technology and Mn/ROAD mainline pavement section data and information to verify/refine/modify IDOT M-E analysis and design concepts and procedures for full-depth asphalt concrete (FDAC) and conventional flexible pavements (CFP). The Mn/ROAD mainline flexible pavements include eleven CFP and three FDAC pavement sections. Four different granular materials were used in the conventional flexible pavements. A fine-grained soil subgrade (R-value of about 12) is present throughout the mainline. Laboratory material testing results, field distress measurements, and FWD test data were used to study pavement deflection response and performance (rutting and asphalt concrete fatigue). The study demonstrated that the IDOT M-E analysis and design procedures for FDAC and CFP sections are adequate. The ILLI-PA VE structural model adequately predicts the pavement responses. The use of bi-linear (arithmetic) subgrade model and the "theta" granular material model ILLI-PA VE inputs closely replicate CFP field FWD deflection responses. The effect of granular material quality on CFP deflection response is very limited. The ILLI-PAVE FWD backcalculation algorithms are adequate for estimating the moduli of asphalt concrete and sub grade soils.

Book excerpt: This study utilized I DOT mechanistic-empirical (M-E) procedures and Mn/ROAD low-volume road (LVR) data and information to verify/refine/modify analysis and design concepts and procedures for L VR flexible pavements. The Mn/ROAD L VR flexible pavements include conventional flexible, full-depth asphalt, surface-treatment and aggregate-surface sections. Laboratory test results, field distress measurements, and FWD test data were used to study the affect of granular material quality on pavement performance and deflection response. The results from the rapid shear tests, permanent deformation tests and field rutting measurements show that granular material rutting potential can be characterized by a rapid shear triaxial test at 15-psi confining pressure. For conventional flexible pavements, granular material quality did not affect the pavement deflection response, but material quality effects were significant for aggregate-surface and surface-treatment pavements. ILLI-PAVE predicted pavement responses were fairly accurate for sections with thicker asphalt concrete surfaces. The FWD deflection basin parameter AUPP (Area Under Pavement Profile) can be used to predict the strains at the bottom of AC layer. Effect of subgrade type on pavement response and performance was studied. Sandy subgrades showed little or no change in pavement structural response due to spring-thaw effects. For the cohesive subgrade sections, moisture changes and spring-thaw effects increased surface deflections. The study showed that the lOOT LVR flexible pavement mechanistic-empirical design concepts and procedures are valid and adequate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a methodology for testing, evaluation and determination of overlay thickness required for a given pavement section. The overlay design procedure presented makes use of some of the recent developments for analysis and design of asphaltic concrete overlays. The evaluation of in-service pavements includes the use of the deflection parameters developed by testing of the existing pavements with known geometry for determining the moduli of various pavement layers and the required overlay thickness. The method utilizes empirical values and VESYS structural subsystem as an integral approach complementary to each other. Six pavement sections across the State of North Carolina were selected for deflection testing. Deflection parameters were developed to characterize the deflection data from these pavement sections. In addition, VESYS structural system was used to develop nomographs for the interpretation of the measured deflection basin parameters. These nomographs were used to backcalculate the layer moduli form deflection parameters and known layer thicknesses using iterative solutions. The backcalculated layer moduli from these nomographs correspond to the climate conditions that happen to exist during the time of testing and must therefore be adjusted to other climatic conditions. A procedure for such an adjustment is also included in the design procedure. Many different methods have been developed for determining an overlay thickness. These methods can be categorized in three groups : component analysis, deflection based, and analytically based. A mechanistic procedure is described in this paper. This procedure is based on the data and findings of a previous research and has been used to evaluate in-service pavements in North Carolina using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) deflection parameters. The procedure includes four major parts : (a) FWD deflection parameters and data collection, (b) back-calculation of layer moduli, (c) adjustment of layer moduli and (d) prediction of overlay thickness. Book excerpt: The structural evaluation of flexible pavement is now carried out mostly by deflection measuring devices such as the dynaflect or Benkelman beam. The object of this investigation was to determine whether the properties of the deflected basin measured by these devices on the pavement surfaces could enable evaluation of the subgrade and/or its overlying pavement separately. The properties of the deflected basin are defined by the maximum deflection and the spreadability, which is the average deflection expressed as a percentage of the maximum deflection. A theoretical analysis showed that these properties are a function of the modulus of elasticity of the subgrade, the average modulus of elasticity of the pavement over the subgrade, and the thickness index of the overlying pavement. A general chart was developed which correlates maximum deflection and spreadability with (i) the subgrade strength, (ii) the average pavement strength, and (iii) the thickness index of the pavement. This chart was tested for structural evaluations of the subgrade and/or its overlying pavement for satellite projects in Virginia. Ten typical examples of the satellite projects are given in the report and the change in their structural behavior with time is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanistic design concepts for conventional flexible pavement (asphalt concrete (AC) surface + granular base/subbase) for highways are proposed and validated. The procedure is based on ILLI-PAVE, a stress dependent finite element computer program, coupled with appropriate transfer functions. Two design criteria are considered: AC flexural fatigue cracking and subgrade rutting. Fatigue cracking is controlled by limiting the tensile strain at the bottom of the AC layer. Subgrade rutting is controlled by limiting the stress-ratio at the granular layer-subgrade interface. Algorithms were developed relating pavement response parameters (stresses, strains, deflections) to AC thickness, AC moduli, granular layer thickness, and subgrade moduli. Extensive analyses of the AASHO Road Test flexible pavement data are presented supporting the validity of the proposed concepts.
