This book was released on 1981 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical evidence based on Army wholesale demand data is presented indicating that traditional error measures such as mean squared error and mean absolute deviation do not necessarily relate to performance in an inventory management system. An alternative method is given which performed well when compared with simulation results. (Author).

Book excerpt: As part of the effort to evaluate TRIM (Timber Resource Inventory Model) for the next RPA National Assessment, a study was conducted using natural pine stands in North Carolina. TRIM has been used for regional timber supply studies in both the Pacific Northwest and the South (Southern Timber Supply Study). The model results are tools used for economic planning and policy making for regions in which timber is part of the economic base. TRIM uses yield tables arrayed by age class in the inventory projection calculations. The application of yield tables in TRIM can potentially alter the results of regional timber supply analysis. The objective of this study, is to investigate the TRIM growth mechanism and examine the effects of empirically derived yields on TRIM projections. In this process, different levels of data aggregation were compared and two other types of yield tables were developed and evaluated. Model projections were based on growth and inventory estimates derived from two successive Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) inventories. Simulation runs took into account "approach to normality", acreage shifts, and timber removals over the range of age classes as described by field measurements. Results were evaluated based on their comparison to FIA field measurements. In most simulations, TRIM growth and inventory projections were substantially below the growth and inventory values calculated from the Flit data. The projections varied with the yield tables used, but higher yields produced the most favorable results. For a North Carolina timber supply study, these results would indicate a sharp decline in the supply of natural pine which is the opposite of what was recorded in the field. This study suggests that empirical yield curves do not represent aggregate stand growth when stands have the characteristics found in North Carolina's natural pine.

Book Synopsis Forecast Evaluation and Risk Management Strategies in Base Stock Inventory Systems with Fill Rate Commitments by : Joanna Bruzda

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider forecasting in base stock inventory systems with commitments concerning the expected short-term fill rate. From the managerial perspective, the short-term fill rate is an important indicator to measure the customer service level as it can be monitored on a regular basis and is the actual/perceived fill rate in finite horizons. First, we present our forecasting task in the decision-theoretic framework and introduce the corresponding Murphy diagrams, which are graphical displays of elementary scoring functions having the property that every consistent loss function for the optimal forecast has a unique representation as a mixture of these functions. These diagrams constitute a significant addendum to the traditional inventory forecast evaluation with economic measures and efficiency curves. Second, we formalize a data-driven procedure to compute the forecasts of interest here assuming a stationary and strong mixing demand process and show that knowing the asymptotic distribution of either a parametric or a nonparametric estimator of the base stock level enables managing the risk of not meeting the fill rate requirement expressed in terms of the averagefill rate. Relying on asymptotic properties and using simulations we offer guidelines on risk management strategies, such as the actual confidence levels needed for making inventory decisions in practice.

Book Synopsis Intermittent Demand Forecasting by : John E. Boylan
Download or read book Intermittent Demand Forecasting written by John E. Boylan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTERMITTENT DEMAND FORECASTING The first text to focus on the methods and approaches of intermittent, rather than fast, demand forecasting Intermittent Demand Forecasting is for anyone who is interested in improving forecasts of intermittent demand products, and enhancing the management of inventories. Whether you are a practitioner, at the sharp end of demand planning, a software designer, a student, an academic teaching operational research or operations management courses, or a researcher in this field, we hope that the book will inspire you to rethink demand forecasting. If you do so, then you can contribute towards significant economic and environmental benefits. No prior knowledge of intermittent demand forecasting or inventory management is assumed in this book. The key formulae are accompanied by worked examples to show how they can be implemented in practice. For those wishing to understand the theory in more depth, technical notes are provided at the end of each chapter, as well as an extensive and up-to-date collection of references for further study. Software developments are reviewed, to give an appreciation of the current state of the art in commercial and open source software. “Intermittent demand forecasting may seem like a specialized area but actually is at the center of sustainability efforts to consume less and to waste less. Boylan and Syntetos have done a superb job in showing how improvements in inventory management are pivotal in achieving this. Their book covers both the theory and practice of intermittent demand forecasting and my prediction is that it will fast become the bible of the field.” —Spyros Makridakis, Professor, University of Nicosia, and Director, Institute for the Future and the Makridakis Open Forecasting Center (MOFC). “We have been able to support our clients by adopting many of the ideas discussed in this excellent book, and implementing them in our software. I am sure that these ideas will be equally helpful for other supply chain software vendors and for companies wanting to update and upgrade their capabilities in forecasting and inventory management.” —Suresh Acharya, VP, Research and Development, Blue Yonder. “As product variants proliferate and the pace of business quickens, more and more items have intermittent demand. Boylan and Syntetos have long been leaders in extending forecasting and inventory methods to accommodate this new reality. Their book gathers and clarifies decades of research in this area, and explains how practitioners can exploit this knowledge to make their operations more efficient and effective.” —Thomas R. Willemain, Professor Emeritus, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
