Book excerpt: Elementary school teachers and principals are endowed with the significant challenge of caring for students' emotional, physical, and academic needs. In order for school leaders to be successful, they often pursue best educational practices that yield great support for students. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in the classroom learning environment, administrators' gratification, and teachers' satisfaction with departmentalization and self-contained classrooms for third and fourth grade students. The data and insights in this study were analyzed to compare the two classroom organizational structures. An analysis of the findings indicated the classroom-learning environment, administrators, and teacher satisfactions were inconclusive classroom.

Book excerpt: Classroom organizational structure and the impact on student achievement has been a major concern for decades for elementary teachers and administrators (McGrath & Rust, 2002). At the elementary level, the expectation is teachers are experts in all curriculum areas, and for elementary teachers these areas are English, language arts, writing, science, social studies, and math. Most elementary teachers believe they are generalists and are unable to be experts in every subject area. This concern has significantly influenced school administrators’ decisions about best practices and classroom organization to maximize student learning. One way administrators are addressing this problem is by departmentalizing and not having every teacher teach every subject (Carolan, 2013). The purpose of this study is to explore teachers’ perceptions on departmentalization and self-contained classrooms at the elementary school level. This study addresses three focus areas: teacher perceptions on departmentalized and self-contained classrooms, advantages and disadvantages of self-contained and departmentalized classrooms, and student achievement. The current study will use a qualitative approach to answer the research questions. Analysis of teacher perceptions in the forms of teacher and administrator questionnaires, focus groups, and interviews will help create a more comprehensive representation of departmentalization and its impact on student achievement as well as the advantages and disadvantages of departmentalization. Data collection and analysis will help to make instructional decisions for classroom organization.
Book Synopsis Self-contained Versus Departmentalized School Organization and the Impact on Fourth and Fifth Grade Student Achievement in Reading and Mathematics as Determined by the Kentucky Core Content Test by : Kimberly Penn Kent

This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference between self-contained and departmentalized classroom organization on the Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) in reading and mathematics for students in fourth and fifth grade. A secondary purpose of this study was to consider how these organizational structures affect the KCCT scores in regard to gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status of the students from which scores were obtained. The results of this study will provide necessary information to educational decision-makers. The review of literature, as presented in Chapter Two, indicates that few current empirical studies have been done in the area of school organization. This study will help fill the gap of research in the area of the impact on student achievement in self-contained and departmentalized school organization. The population for this project included fourth and fifth grade students from eight public elementary schools in one urban school district within the state of Kentucky. Within this district there were 88 elementary schools. The schools included in this study were selected by the researcher, because four offered a self-contained school organization and the other four offered a departmentalized school design. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and through Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Analysis of the descriptive statistics showed the two groups (self-contained and departmentalized) of schools to be similar. Random effects ANOVA, intra-class correlation, and multiple regression were used to examine both student and classroom level data. The findings from the study showed that there was no effect of group (self-contained versus departmentalized) on the academic performance of the students in either reading or mathematics KCCT scale scores. The conclusions drawn by the researcher, based on the study results were that based on the population of the study, the choice of school organization (self-contained or departmentalized) had no significant effect on the academic achievement of fourth and fifth grade students on KCCT reading and mathematics scale scores.

Book excerpt: Because the organization of the classroom and the school provide the framework for teaching and learning, this important volume reviews research that focuses on specific issues including: achievement effects of alternative school and classroom organizational practices, ability grouping, departmentalization, special and remedial programs, evaluation processes, and class size. The studies utilize realistic evaluations rather than laboratory or experimental data, and do not prescribe particular practices.

Book excerpt: School systems throughout the United States are obligated to meet requirements established by federal law and benchmarks established by state governments in student achievement. Therefore, understanding how children learn and the impact of learning environments may be factors in obtaining annual yearly progress (AYP) and improving student achievement. This study contributes to current research identifying teacher perceptions of learning practices and organizational structures needed to improve student achievement in upper elementary grades in public schools. The purpose of this study was to identify if associations exist between classroom organizational structures and student achievement (CRT/TCAP) scores. Quantitative data were used to distinguish grade organization in relation to student achievement using standardized test data. Demographic data were collected from 67 returned surveys representing six school systems in Northeast Tennessee. The statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in fourth and fifth grade student achievement scores in language arts, science, and social studies between students in self-contained and departmentalized classrooms. Although fourth grade students revealed no differences in math, fifth grade students had significant differences in 3 achievement math scores between those students in self-contained and departmentalized classrooms favoring departmentalized classrooms. Further analysis revealed no differences in student achievement scores for fourth and fifth grade students between teachers who favor and those who do not favor departmentalized or self-contained classrooms. The recommendations from this study include the use of a similar study to incorporate more school systems with a larger sample of teachers.
