Book Synopsis Christian Materiality by : Caroline Walker Bynum

Book excerpt: Late Medieval Christianity's encounter with miraculous materials viewed in the context of changing conceptions of matter itself. In the period between 1150 and 1550, an increasing number of Christians in western Europe made pilgrimage to places where material objects--among them paintings, statues, relics, pieces of wood, earth, stones, and Eucharistic wafers--allegedly erupted into life through such activities as bleeding, weeping, and walking about. Challenging Christians both to seek ever more frequent encounters with miraculous matter and to turn to an inward piety that rejected material objects of devotion, such phenomena were by the fifteenth century at the heart of religious practice and polemic. In Christian Materiality, Caroline Walker Bynum describes the miracles themselves, discusses the problems they presented for both church authorities and the ordinary faithful, and probes the basic scientific and religious assumptions about matter that lay behind them. She also analyzes the proliferation of religious art in the later Middle Ages and argues that it called attention to its materiality in sophisticated ways that explain both the animation of images and the hostility to them on the part of iconoclasts. Seeing the Christian culture of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries as a paradoxical affirmation of the glory and the threat of the natural world, Bynum's study suggests a new understanding of the background to the sixteenth-century reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. Moving beyond the cultural study of "the body"--a field she helped to establish--Bynum argues that Western attitudes toward body and person must be placed in the context of changing conceptions of matter itself. Her study has broad theoretical implications, suggesting a new approach to the study of material culture and religious practice.

Book excerpt: From Miroslav Volf, one of the world's foremost Christian theologians—and co-teacher, along with Tony Blair, of a groundbreaking Yale University course on faith and globalization—comes Allah, a timely and provocative argument for a new pluralism between Muslims and Christians. In a penetrating exploration of every side of the issue, from New York Times headlines on terrorism to passages in the Koran and excerpts from the Gospels, Volf makes an unprecedented argument for effecting a unified understanding between Islam and Christianity. In the tradition of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s Islam in the Modern World, Volf’s Allah is essential reading for students of the evolving political science of the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis The Enduring Covenant by : Padraic O'Hare
Download or read book The Enduring Covenant written by Padraic O'Hare and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book arose out of the author's fifteen years of sustained engagement in Jewish-Christian relations. His purpose here is to speak about the practice of religious education in the church in which anti-Judaism is eliminated. O'Hare focuses on "the holiness of the religious community" which, he notes, can develop along triumphal, absolute, and exclusive lines. He suggests instead that "every time we unearth a defensive and xenophobic practice or pattern of speech in our religion and set it aside, we are doing something that adds to the health of our religious community, to its capacity to assist people to become holy." Chapter 1 surveys what philosopher Jules Isaac calls the history of the "teaching of contempt"; chapter 2 deals with genuine religious pluralism and dialogue; chapter 3 is a short "Christology" devoid of triumphalism and exclusivism; chapter 4 focuses on religious education and its purpose to form holy people; chapter 5 is an appreciation of "the genius of Judaism," its world view and life; chapter 6 focuses on practice, including elements of a paradigm shift in religious education, principles for such practice, and select examples of programs of religious education for interreligious reverence, especially between Jews and Christians. Padraic O'Hare teaches in the Religious Studies Department of Merrimack College, North Andover, MA, and is the author of The Way of Faithfulness: Contemplation and Formation in the Church, also published by Trinity Press.

Book Synopsis An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine by : John Henry Cardinal Newman
Download or read book An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine written by John Henry Cardinal Newman and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 1994-03-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, reprinted from the 1878 edition, “is rightly regarded as one of the most seminal theological works ever to be written,” states Ian Ker in his foreword to this sixth edition. “It remains,” Ker continues, "the classic text for the theology of the development of doctrine, a branch of theology which has become especially important in the ecumenical era.” John Henry Cardinal Newman begins the Essay by defining how true developments in doctrine occur. He then delivers a sweeping consideration of the growth of doctrine in the Catholic Church from the time of the Apostles to his own era. He demonstrates that the basic “rule” under which Christianity proceeded through the centuries is to be found in the principle of development, and he emphasizes that throughout the entire life of the Church this principle has been in effect and safeguards the faith from any corruption.
Book Synopsis Philosophical Exigencies of Christian Religion by : Maurice Blondel
Download or read book Philosophical Exigencies of Christian Religion written by Maurice Blondel and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical Exigencies of Christian Religion is a translation of two of Maurice Blondel’s essays. Blondel’s thinking played a significant role in the deliberations and arguments of the Second Vatican Council. Although a towering figure in the history of twentieth-century Catholic thought, the later systematic works of Maurice Blondel have been largely inaccessible in the English-speaking world. Oliva Blanchette, who previously translated Blondel’s early groundbreaking work Action (1893), now offers the first English translation of the final work Blondel himself signed off on the day before he died, Philosophical Exigencies of Christian Religion. This work of transition from mere philosophy to a consideration of Christian religion consists of two main essays, The Christian Sense and the shorter On Assimilation, followed by a Reconsideration and Global View and an Appendix: Clarifications and Admonitions written in answer to an inquiry by a young scholar about method. The first essay explores the Christian sense of the spiritual life and how Christian religion, even as supernatural, can come under the purview of critical philosophy. The second essay examines the move from analogy to assimilation in speaking of the Christian life. Blondel tackles the question: How does the human spirit combine with the divine spirit in such a way that neither is lost in the process? Philosophical Exigencies of Christian Religion is critical for understanding Blondel’s thought. This high-quality translation and Blanchette’s concise preface will appeal not only to philosophers and theologians but also to spiritual writers and directors of spiritual retreats in the Ignatian and Jesuit traditions.

Tozer tells us that God intends for truth to move us to moral action, that the Holy Spirit is working to bring each believer into a spiritual development according to the Father's nature, and that anything that keeps us from the Bible, no matter how harmless it appears, is our enemy. He reminds us that while we may be in the world, we are not of this world. Each chapter will instruct those who seek to truly know and follow God, showing how heaven's children are to live on earth.
Book Synopsis Jesus and Addiction to Origins by : Willi Braun
Download or read book Jesus and Addiction to Origins written by Willi Braun and published by Working Papers. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays constitute an extended argument for an anthropocentric, human-focused, study of religious practices. The basic premise of the argument, offered in the opening section, is that there is nothing special or extraordinary about human behaviors and constructs that are claimed to have uniquely religious status and authority. Instead, they are fundamentally human and so the scholar of religion is engaged in nothing more or less than studying humans across time and place and all their complex existence-that includes creating more-than-human beings and realities. As an extended and detailed example of such an approach, the second part of the book contains essays that address practices, rhetoric and other data in early Christianities within Greco-Roman cultures and religions. The underlying aim is to insert studies of the New Testament and non-canonical texts, most often presented as "biblical studies," into the anthropocentric study of religion proposed in the opening section. For a general reading of modern biblical scholarship makes clear the assumption that the Christian bible is a "sacred text" whose principal raison d'etre is to stand, fetish-like, as the foundational and highest authority in matters moral, ritual or theological; how might we instead approach the study of these texts if they are nothing more or less than human documents deriving from situations that were themselves all too human? Braun's Jesus and Addiction to Origins seeks to answer just that question-doing so in a way that readers working outside Christian origins will undoubtedly find useful applications for the people, places, and historical periods that they study.
Book Synopsis Evangelism after Pluralism by : Bryan Stone
Download or read book Evangelism after Pluralism written by Bryan Stone and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to evangelize ethically in a multicultural climate? Following his successful Evangelism after Christendom, Bryan Stone addresses reasons evangelism often fails and explains how it can become distorted as a Christian practice. Stone urges us to consider a new approach, arguing for evangelism as a work of imagination and a witness to beauty rather than a crass effort to compete for converts in pluralistic contexts. He shows that the way we lead our lives as Christians is the most meaningful tool of evangelism in today's rapidly changing world.

Book Synopsis Practice, Practice Theory and Theology by : Kirstine Helboe Johansen

This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might practice theories and engagement with practice contribute to and advance theological study of religion and religious life and practices? This volume explores and discusses how theological engagement with practice, theoretically as well as empirically, might profit from theories of practice developed in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, education and organisational studies during the recent decades, but so far scarcely employed within theology. In part I, the volume unfolds key components of practice theory, especially as they have more recently been developed within sociological practice theories, reflect on their significance and potential with regard to theology. In part II, these perspectives are employed in the study of concrete religious practices - established as well as experimental religious practices, and collective as well as individual ones. By unfolding connections between theology and practice theories, and reflecting on practice theories' analytical and theoretical potential for theological study of religion, the book will be of interest for any scholar in the study of contemporary religion and practical theology.
