Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address of the Young Men's Temperance Society to the Young Men of Boston: To Which Is Annexed the Constitution of the Society Young Men's Temperance Society has been instituted. And it is because it is believed that in both these ways that influ ence will be beneficial, that this Society claims, as it has a right to, attention and support. It is peculiarly fit that young men should unite for the pro motion of temperance, because they themselves are most ex posed, if not to the confirmed vice of intemperance, at least to that which too surely induces it. The seeds of vice, as well as of virtue, can be and are planted in youth. And there are many circumstances which expose the young man, more than any other, to dangerous excesses. Even the best feelings of his nature, and the most attractive traits of his character, are eas ily trained by abuse to be the ministers of his ruin. Expe ricuce reads us a melancholy lesson on this subject, as it points out the numerous individuals who have passed from what is mildly termed a wild boyhood to a wretched age. They began in joviality, and ended in destruction. But the story need not be told. We have only to look round among ourselves, and in view of the attractive temptations to excess with which youth is beset, and of the comparatively frail ar mor by which it is protected, we shall be convinced that of all societies for the promotion of temperance, the most im portant, so far certainly as the members are concerned, are those of young men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Manual, of the American Temperance Society, for the Young Men of the United States And though the facts and the reasonings are applied in many cases particularly to ardent spirit, and are addressed to the various classes of persons in the community; yet they may be applied to intoxicating, liq nor of; allsorts, in proportion to its intoxicating power, and are of great importance, especially to young men. It is earnestly desired, therefore, that every young man in the United States may be supplied with a copy of this Manual, and may become familiarly, and thoroughly acquainted with its contents. It is also desired, that every person, into whose hand it may come, will take special pains to give to it a universal circulation. And should all persons be led to abstain from the use, as a beverage, of that which intoxicates, their health, usefulness, and happiness would be greatly promoted, and drunkenness, with all its evils to the body and soul, would universally, and for ever cease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Reform Vindicated: An Address Delivered Before the Temperance Societies of Charleston, on the 4th of July, 1843 Thus has Providence, since he made the earth, dealt with the nations of it, in relation to this great matter of temperance. Prosperity, dominion, glory, the rewards of sobriety; weakness, disaster, overthrow, the invariable punishments of the opposite and so, people of America, be your present glory and liberties what they may, will he deal with you, if vou follow the vicious example of those dead nations, whose history has been left for your warning. I am speaking to an audience of commercial men. Have you ever thought how deeply the economical interests of your country are involved in the success of the temperance reform? I wish to present the subject to you for one moment in this light, for there are some minds so accustomed to compute the value of every thing by its money value, there is no other way of subduing the perversity of their judgments but by proofs of arithmetic. Not many such are here I am sure, still, the least earthly of us will have his convictions strengthened by stubborn facts, from which there can be no appeal. A single illustration or two on this head will be enough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses The Council of the Massachusetts Temperance Society deem it of great importance to reprint, for general circulation, the following excellent Address on the Drinking-Usages of Society, by the eminent divine and philanthropist, Bishop Potter, so well known, not only in this city, but throughout the Union. It was delivered in a sister State, before a large and highly cultivated audience, - a portion of the community supposed by many to be free from the dangers which assail the poor and the imperfectly educated. In this Address, the Bishop has conclusively, and in the most beautiful and fervid language, proved, that, in consequence of the deference paid by the rest of the community to the opinions and practices of the higher classes, the habit of self indulgence among the latter has such a baneful influence as greatly to retard the progress of the Temperance Reform. The Appeal to the Clergy of the Church of England in favor of Total Abstinence commends itself to the prayerful consideration of every member of the Church of Christ. When we consider the immense influence of the ministers of the gospel among all classes of men, there is no doubt, that, were they generally to give this movement the aid of their example, a power would go forth against the mighty evils of intemperance, which would make itself felt throughout the world, and cheer and encourage the heart of all those who love their fellow-man.
