Book Synopsis The Economics of Persistent Innovation: An Evolutionary View by : Christian Bas
Download or read book The Economics of Persistent Innovation: An Evolutionary View written by Christian Bas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Latham Christian Le Bas Persistence of firm innovative behavior became an important topic in applied industrial organization with the publication of the seminal empirical work of P. Geroski and his colleagues (1997). Evidence that firms innovate persistently has led previous studies to focus on the determinants of innovation persistence and on its heterogeneity across industries, technologies and countries. The aims of this book are: (1) to illumine the scale and scope of the phenomenon of persistence in innovation, and (2) to account for the principal factors that explain why some firms innovates persistently and others do not. Because this book deals intensively and extensively with the subject of firm innovation persistence, which is not, as yet, a well-known term, we need to provide a nontrivial definition of it that encompasses the full range topics we want to address and aids our understanding of how they are related to each other. We begin with a careful identification of "innovation. " Our first definition is drawn from K. Pavitt (2003), "innovation processes involve the exploration and exploitation of opportunities for a new or improved product, process or service, based either on an advance in technical practice or a change in market demand, or a combination of the two. " While this definition is clear, and conforms well to both our empirical and theoretical perspectives, some elaboration may help to clarify the concept.
Book Synopsis Chintrepreneurship or Shanzhai Model by : Jiangning Zhao
Download or read book Chintrepreneurship or Shanzhai Model written by Jiangning Zhao and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretically, the formational and developmental mechanism of Shanzhai Model (the Chintrepreneurship, the China-way of Doing Business) theorized in this text, in addition to complying with the traditionally Western dominated frameworks of risk-taking-oriented, technology-oriented, resource-oriented, and speculation-oriented – also creates the peculiar or updated characteristics, complementary and supplementary to the existing theories of entrepreneurship and strategic management. The peculiar characteristics of Shanzhai Model may be attributed to the government policy guidance, from macroeconomic level, to technology development level, and to market expansion level, through the regulated cycle process of CCP government ‘Five-Year-Plan’. Such a dynamic process of government policy system determines the dynamisms of China economy, industry and enterprises, linking the previous weaknesses into the upgrade or rectification of the next five-year-plan, forcing enterprises to obligately upgrade or adjust their business and management operations (given the absolute autocracy of China government). Practically, the imitation-based cost-saving operations on the enterprise level, the ‘Wolf Like’ clustered industry-chain operations organized by the principle of ‘Risks-Resources-Benefits Sharing’ on the industry level, and the ‘Price-to-Performance’ products advantages on the market level – together, they have been contributing to the leapfrog of China economy, by taking advantages of increasingly globalized business environment and the network (Internet) information technology system, turning China into an economic Shanzhai, corruption Shanzhai, and a political Shanzhai, imposing the ‘One Belt One Road’ hegemonism on the harmony of international community. Is it too late? The contribution of this text material may benefit MBA, Ph.D students in management, and especially benefiting to those corporate executives. Regardless of De-Globalization or De-China campaigns, the flow of business is inevitably and eternally beyond the boundaries of countries one way or another, sooner or later. Book Synopsis Persistence of Technological Leadership by : Christopher J. Metcalf
Download or read book Persistence of Technological Leadership written by Christopher J. Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a model of competitive innovation, I derive theoretical conditions for an entrant to displace the incumbent firm by innovating in an undeveloped, substitute (emerging) technology. The main result presents conditions on profitability and innovation speed that yield a Markov Perfect Equilibrium in which the entrant pursues the emerging technology, while the incumbent chooses to persist with the established technology and collect short-run profits. Notably, this result does not require the entrant's superiority to the incumbent for innovation. Finally, when the model is calibrated to hard drive industry data, its predictions are consistent with the observed outcomes.
Book Synopsis Technological Innovation Persistence by : Christian Le Bas
Download or read book Technological Innovation Persistence written by Christian Le Bas and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we will review the literature on technological innovation persistence and provide a general theoretical framework to analyze the main determinants of this innovative behavior. Moreover, no previous empirical study has taken into account organizational innovation practices as possible determinants of innovation persistence. We will therefore include them, as previous studies have shown the interaction effects between the two types of innovation, and produce empirical results on technical innovation persistence. A multinomial probit model was used to estimate the likelihood of belonging to each of the three longitudinal innovation profiles. Results confirm the differentiated impact of determinants on process and technological innovation persistence, and the effect of R&D intensity, R&D cooperation and competition intensity. As hypothesized, we also found that organizational innovation is a determinant factor for innovation persistence and, more generally speaking, for technological innovation, in particular organizational practices such as knowledge management and external partnerships.

Book Synopsis Technology and Market Structure by : John Sutton
Download or read book Technology and Market Structure written by John Sutton and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-01-26 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Sutton sets out a unified theory that encompasses two major approaches to studying market, while generating a series of novel predictions as to how markets evolve. Traditionally, the field of industrial organization has relied on two unrelated theories—the cross-section theory and the growth-of-firms theory—to explain cross-industry differences in concentration and within-industry skewness. The two approaches are based on very different mathematical structures and few researchers have attempted to relate them to each other. In this book, John Sutton unifies the two approaches through a theory that rests on three simple principles. The first two, a "survivor principle" that says that firms will not pursue loss-making strategies, and an "arbitrage principle" that says that if a profitable opportunity is available, some firm will take it, suffice to define a set of possible outcomes. The third, the "symmetry principle," says that the strategy used by a new entrant into any submarket depends neither on the entrants identity nor on its history in other submarkets. This allows researchers to bring together the roles of strategic interactions and of independence effects. The result is that the considerations motivating the cross-section tradition and those motivating the growth-of-firms tradition both drop out within a single game-theoretic model. This book follows Sutton's Sunk Costs and Market Structure, published by MIT Press in 1991.
Book Synopsis Open Innovation by : Henry Chesbrough
Download or read book Open Innovation written by Henry Chesbrough and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open Innovation describes an emergent model of innovation in which firms draw on research and development that may lie outside their own boundaries. In some cases, such as open source software, this research and development can take place in a non-proprietary manner. Henry Chesbrough and his collaborators investigate this phenomenon, linking the practice of innovation to the established body of innovation research, showing what's new and what's familiar in the process. Offering theoretical explanations for the use (and limits) of open innovation, the book examines the applicability of the concept, implications for the boundaries of firms, the potential of open innovation to prove successful, and implications for intellectual property policies and practices. The book will be key reading for academics, researchers, and graduate students of innovation and technology management.
Book Synopsis Strategy in Transition by : Richard A. Bettis
Download or read book Strategy in Transition written by Richard A. Bettis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-02-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bursting of the ‘dotcom bubble’ and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, have brought into question received wisdom about strategy. This volume reviews the lessons to be learnt from these events, and proposes that, as a result, strategy in the twenty-first century will have to develop along new lines. Comprising a series of outstanding contributions by experts in the field, the collection focuses on changes that are occurring in how strategy is viewed, formulated and analysed, and looks forward to the future of strategic management. It discusses the emergence of new modes of thinking, new models, and new processes, and lays foundations on which strategy can build in future.

Book Synopsis Creativity and Leadership in Science, Technology, and Innovation by : Sven Hemlin
Download or read book Creativity and Leadership in Science, Technology, and Innovation written by Sven Hemlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership is vital to creativity and successful innovation in groups and organizations; leadership is however seldom studied in the academic literature as a creativity driver. One reason for the lack of attention paid to leadership’s effect on creativity may be the common belief that creativity cannot and should not be managed. Creative individuals and groups are regarded as, and indeed often are, autonomous and self-driving. From this belief the erroneous conclusion is drawn that there is no need for leadership in creative environments and situations. The better conclusion, proposed by this book, is that leadership not only stimulates creativity, but that such a leadership in the science, technology, and innovation fields should specifically possess at least two features: a) expertise in the field(s), and b) an ability to create, support, and encourage individuals, groups, and creative knowledge environments. A number of specialist authors in this volume offer original theoretical, empirical, and applied chapters that elucidate how to better organize and lead creative efforts in science, technology, and innovation. A number of important research questions are raised and answered, including: What kinds of leaderships are needed at different levels of S&T organizations for a creative output? What social and cognitive abilities and skills are needed for leadership in creative environments? How does leadership vary with different phases of the creative process? This book offers concrete analysis of how leaders and managers can facilitate, promote, and organize for creative performance in science, technology, and in innovating organizations, making it required reading for academic and industrial research leaders, scientists, and engineers.
