Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Carola Normann-Tschampel develops an enhanced understanding of the relevance of Value-Based Management (VBM) to management practice in Mittelstand. A theory-practice gap is identified based on a unique overview of the field of research. The empirical investigation focuses on three specifically identified areas of management (strategic decision-making, objectives, attitudes) and uses a specific research approach. The insights gained from taking an interpretive stance towards owner-managers’ practical experience provide a valuable basis to further address the overall research gap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, sub-Saharan Africa has lagged behind other regions in economic performance. The important overall indicators of performance, however, mask wide differences among countries. On the whole, countries that effectively implemented comprehensive adjustment and reform programs showed better results. Their experiences demonstrate that an expansion in private saving and investment is key to achieving gains in real per capita GDP. The four papers included in this publication provide a cross country analysis that assesses empirically the role of publlic policies in stimulating private saving and investment in the region in 1986-92 and describe the adjustment experiences of Ghana (1983-91), Senegal (1978-1993), and Uganda (1987-94).

Book excerpt: We propose a tax-adjusted q model with physical and intangible assets and estimate it with a self-collected comprehensive database of intangible assets. The presence of intangibles changes the accounting and economic measures of q. We show that when tax changes are temporary, the q model can be estimated by adjusting for the firm’s intangible stock and intangible intensity. We estimate our model using temporary investment tax incentive policies in the United States in the early 2000s. When the q-model accounts for intangible assets, the estimated investment elasticity to tax incentives is generally larger than otherwise. It is also larger for intangible-intensive firms, and increases with firm size.

Book excerpt: This paper studies the impact of expenditure conditionality in IMF programs on the composition of public spending. A granular dataset on different government expenditure conditions covering 115 countries for the 1992-2016 period is compiled. The results support the view that while conditionality on specific elements of spending could help achieve a program’s short-term objectives, it is structural conditionality which delivers lasting benefits. Structural public financial management conditionality (such as on budget execution and control) has proven to be effective in boosting the long-term level of education, health, and public investment expenditures. The results further indicate that conditionality on raising such spending may come at the expense of other expenditures. Finally, the successful implementation (and not mere existence) of the conditionality is crucial for improved outcomes. These findings are relevant for policy makers targeting achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Nowadays, deregulated and globalized financial markets force companies into competition for investors. The challenges capital market-oriented companies have to meet are increasing information needs of investors and rigid rules and regulations. Well implemented and managed Investor Relations and Corporate Reporting activities that gain the trust of the financial market could assist in facing up to competition. Financial and Corporate Reporting is all about communicating the long-term strategic alignment, quality and experience of the management as well as other factors that determine the value of the company, e.g. a sustainable, solid business development associated with a transparent corporate communication. From investor s and analyst s points of view, which are geared to a forward-looking approach in case of an investment decision, the information value of traditional and predominately retrospective financial statements encounters its limits. The ambition of legislator and standard setter to make the group management report to a value- and future-oriented instrument is a signpost in the right direction. The group management report should additionally facilitate estimates about the future development of the company by a stronger consideration of the management s view. Numerous empirical studies provide evidence that the capital market is affected by imperfect and unequally distributed information (asymmetric information distribution) as well as by conflict of objective and interest between the management (agent) and shareholder (principal). Modern Investor Relations and Corporate Reporting activities go beyond the mere communication of facts and figures. Investor Relations and Corporate Reporting reduce skepticism and create transparency by building up a direct relationship to the investor. The present master thesis examines interdependencies between companies and investors as well as the organizational integration in the company s structure by means of scientific theories. In addition, a primary research of 10-DAX companies regarding their Investor Relations and Corporate Reporting activities ascertains how several communication measures are effectively applied in practice and how much importance companies attach to well managed capital market communication. The survey reveals strengths and weaknesses of today s capital market communication and outlines future prospects of Corporate Reporting. The present master [...]
