Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metallurgy: An Elementary d104-Book IN issuing this little work the author has endeavoured to provide the student with a book of moderate size, giving a clear and concise account of metallurgical processes, and the principles upon which they are based. Details are only given when necessary for the sake of clearness. The chemical changes involved in the various processes described are specially dealt with, but it must be remembered that the equations given for reactions occurring at elevated temperatures in most cases only partially express the truth. It has been written in as popular a style as the subject permits, to make it available for the general reader. The author wishes to express his indebtedness to Messrs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Elementary Metallurgy for the Use of Students Most metals in their natural state differ widely from their condition after subjection to the various smelting and refining operations by which they are separated from other matters associated with them in the earth. Ores of metals occur in two ways, viz., in the metallic state, the metal being free or simply mixed with other metals and in a state of chemical combination, which is by far the more common. A few elementary substances, however, (notably lithium, sodium, potassium, ) are lighter than water; on the other hand they possess, in a very distinct way, the chemical characteristics of metals. I to 5 inclusive are presented a number of general experiments which form. An introduction to the study of metallurgy. Laboratory work in metallurgy is largely confined to the study Of the behavior of solids at moderately high heat. It is essential, therefore, that the first experiment should instruct the student in the furnace provided for Obtaining these temperatures. Systematic metallurgy naturally starts with the production of the pure metals from the compounds or salts found in nature. The chemical processes involved in these operations are quite dissimilar to the test-tube reactions with which the student is already familiar. Experiments nos. 2 and 3, on oxidizing and reducing reactions, are given in order that the student may adjust his state of mind to the metallurgical viewpoint. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Metallurgy: Iron and Steel In connection with the development of this process, the work of: Mushet must not be overlooked. Following Bessemer were many who, stimulated by his success, introduced other processes of steelmaking. Of these processes, the foremost, and one that is gaining ground yearly, is that of the regenerative furnace associated with the name of Siemens. This furnace gave rise to the now well-known siemens-martin process of steel making. The product of this process is a very uniform steel, and one that ofi'ers wide adaptability for structural purposes, ship and boiler plates, castings, etc. The latest development of the siemens-martin process is that of the Talbot open-hearth continuous method of steelmaking, which attracted so much attention at the Spring meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, 1900. At this meeting the probable substitution in the near future of Bessemer steel by that of the open-hearth (siemens-martin) make was discussed. The ever-increasing strin geney of the specifications now applied to steel lends much probability to the eventual suppression of Bessemer steel by that of open-hearth make. In connection with these two methods of steelmaking, the dephosphorization process of Thomas and Gilchrist must be mentioned, resulting in the pro duction of basic steel. Germany and Bri tain annually produce large quantities of steel from basic Bessemer converters or basic lined open-hearth plants, thus utiliz in g irons for the production of good-quality metal, which, under other conditions, would be useless from a steel making point of view.
