Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Geography for Massachusetts Children In regard to manner, it may be said, that this is a practical book, neither intended to be learned by rote, nor to amuse children, except so far as the acquisition of distinct ideas may give them pleasure; the object being not to give a few unconnected notions, but a regular series of lessons, that will serve as a sure foundation for future progress. The book is intended, in fact, to be an introduction to the Common School Geography, and, like that, contains little or nothing that will not be as true as it is now, when the child has left school and gone forth to use what he has acquired. The time will prob ably never come, to the present generation at least, when the newest edition of either book cannot be used in the same class with the oldest edition, a consideration of some importance in the selection of a school book. Large Outline Maps, similar to those in the book, will soon be prepared by the authors, at a low price; and, as the plan is different from that of other geographies, all the necessary for its use are given as fast as they are needed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Geography for Massachusetts Children Many Geographies have been prepared for Primary Schools, hut still it is believed that in several points, both of matter and manner, there is great room for improvement. In regard to the matter of Common School geographies, it has not only been the custom to introduce much that is not geography, but to devote the larger part of the book to remote countries, with which children have little or no sympathy. The mischief is, that authors are so anxious to make books that may be used every where, that they are nearly unfitted to be used any where; and it is a striking fact, that, with the exception of the Common School Geography, one eighth of which is devoted to Massachusetts, the popular text books despatch our State in two or three pages, and these contain all that our children are taught at school of their native town, county, and State! This little work proposes to make them acquainted with Home, at the risk of not being used out of Massachusetts. Start by making sure kids know the main places & geographic features in their own state. Give them activities that pretend they are taking a cross-state bike tour, using free football game passes, jogging through the state, etc., & they'll find their way around in a hurry! Geography activities include info on counties, rivers, museums, historic places, sites of interest, colleges, bordering states, climate, topography, crops and more, all ready to reproduce! Approximately 30 activities and 200 geography related places and facts are covered. Students work alone or in groups and use maps, reference books or resource people to complete challenging riddles, matching games, word searches, fill-in lists, scavenger hunts, and completion exercises that reinforce learning, sharpen research skills, and provide a lively introduction to Massachusetts.

Book excerpt: Exploring Massachusetts through Project-Based Leaning includes 50 well-thought-out projects designed for grades 3-5. In assigning your students projects that dig into MassachusettsÕs geography, history, government, economy, current events, and famous people, you will deepen their appreciation and understanding of Massachusetts while simultaneously improving their analytical skills and ability to recognize patterns and big-picture themes. Project-based learning today is much different than the craft-heavy classroom activities popular in the past. Inquiry, planning, research, collaboration, and analysis are key components of project-based learning activities today. However, that doesnÕt mean creativity, individual expression, and fun are out. They definitely arenÕt! Each project is designed to help students gain important knowledge and skills that are derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subject areas. Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. Encourage your students to take charge of their projects as much as possible. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and guide. The projects are structured such that students can often work through the process on their own or through cooperation with their classmates.

However, during the preceding centuries a large body of English-language literature relevant to the field of special geography was published. Four Centuries of Special Geography lists all the works published before 1888 and includes descriptions of each entry and notes on later editions.
