Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Research on the Strength and Fracture of Materials: Volume 3Bs—Applications and Non-Metals contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture, held at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in June 1977. The papers review the state of the art with respect to testing of fracture in a wide range of non-metals such as ceramics, glass, composites, polymers, biomaterials, and concrete. This volume is divided into five sections and opens by discussing the role of acoustic emission in fracture toughness testing and the relation between static and dynamic fracture toughness of structural steels. The reader is then introduced to methods for determining stress-intensity factors of simplified geometries of structural parts; stress analysis of pressure vessels by thermal shock; the fracture toughness of constructional steels in cyclic loading; and fracture processes and fracture toughness in powder forged steels. The remaining chapters explore the influence of low-cycle damage on fracture toughness; fracture of structural alloys at temperatures approaching absolute zero; fracture mechanisms in Si-Al-O-N ceramics; propagation and bifurcation of cracks in quartz; and the effect of pressure and environment on the fracture and yield of polymers. This monograph will be a useful resource for metallurgists, materials scientists, and structural and mechanical engineers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid advances in the nuclear and aerospace technologies in the past two decades compounded with the increasing demands for high performance, energy-efficient power plant components and engines have made reliable thermal stress analysis a critical factor in the design and operation of such equipment. Recently, and as experienced by the author, the need for sophis ticated analyses has been extended to the energy resource industry such as in-situ coal gasification and in-situ oil recovery from oil sands and shales. The analyses in the above applications are of a multidisciplinary nature, and some involve the additional complexity of multiphase and phase change phenomena. These extremely complicated factors preclude the use of classical methods, and numerical techniques such as the finite element method appear to be the most viable alternative solution. The development of this technique so far appears to have concentrated in two extremes; one being overly concerned with the accuracy of results and tending to place all effort in the implementation of special purpose element concepts and computational algorithms, the other being for commercial purposes with the ability of solving a wide range of engineering problems. However, to be versatile, users require substantial training and experience in order to use these codes effectively. Above all, no provision for any modifi cation of these codes by users is possible, as all these codes are proprietary and access to the code is limited only to the owners.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of ICF International Symposium on Fracture Mechanics (Beijing) by :
Download or read book Proceedings of ICF International Symposium on Fracture Mechanics (Beijing) written by and published by VSP. This book was released on 1983-12 with total page 1132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 132 selected papers presented at the Symposium which will be held on November 22-25, 1983 in Beijing and is the first of international symposia on fracture mechanics held in China. In this volume one may find the contributions of many internationally well known scientists and engineers is the field of fracture mechanics. Among the 132 papers from 12 countries and regions, 16 are invited lectures which were specially chosen to cover major trends in fracture mechanics and were prepared by specialists actively engaged on the respective subjects. All papers are grouped under the 6 headings, that is, 1. Elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics; 2. Applications of fracture mechanics; 3. Test methods; 4. Fatigue; 5. Fracture models and micro-mechanisms and 6. Fracture of non-metals. 70 papers are from Chinese contributors. It is the first time that Chinese scientists and engineers working on this field presented their studies to the outside world in such a large number and wide range of topics. Anyone interested in fracture mechanics may find in this volume the recent advances in this field. Anyone interested in the development in China may find in this volume the state of the art of fracture mechanics studies in China. This proceedings may serve also as a reference book for engineers, applied mathematicians, metallurgists, physicists and other scientists, as well as graduate students and undergraduate students. There are approximately 1,100 pages.
