Book excerpt: Chemical, physical, and biological attributes of the aquatic habitat of five Lower Mississippi River secondary channels were surveyed during summer (July) 1984; two of the channels were resurveyed during fall (October). Dikes at least partially restricted flow through two of the channels (Lakeport Towhead and Cottonwood Bar, river miles 470 and 528, respectively); flow through the remaining three (Wolf Island, river mile 935; Island 8, river mile 915; Profit Island, river mile 250) was not restricted. The channel at which flow was most restricted, Lakeport Towhead, showed both physical and chemical differences from the others. Electroshocking catches of fish were highest at Profit Island due to unusually large collections of catfishes. The macroinvertebrate assemblages found within the channels were similar overall, and they appeared to reflect the current speed and substrate conditions. The dike macrofauna was similar to that noted in earlier studies on the Lower Mississippi River. Dikes that block or greatly restrict flow through secondary channels produce habitats in which the macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages are quite different from undiked channels, at least when river stages are near or lower than the controlling elevation of the dikes. Book excerpt: The international journal Ecohydrology & Hydrobiology (E&H) has been created to promote the concept of Ecohydrology, which is defined as the study of the functional interrelations between hydrology and biota at the catchment scale. Ecohydrology extends from the molecular level to catchment-scale processes and is based on three principles: • framework (hydrological principle) - quantification and integration of hydrological and ecological processes at a basin scale; • target (ecological principle) - necessity of enhancing ecosystem absorbing capacity and ecosystem services; and • management tool (ecological engineering) – the use of ecosystem properties for regulation the interplay between hydrology and biota. The journal encourages the submission of manuscripts which adopt an integrative approach to aquatic sciences, explaining ecological and hydrological processes at a river-basin scale or propose practical applications of this knowledge. It will also consider papers in other hydrobiological fields. Especially welcome are papers on regulatory mechanism within biocenosis and the resistance and resilience of freshwater and costal zones ecosystems. There is no page charge for published papers. All submitted papers, written exclusively in English, should be original works, unpublished and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All papers are peer-reviewed. The following types of papers are considered for publication in E&H: • original research papers • invited or submitted review papers, • short communications

Book excerpt: TO PROVIDE DATA FOR DESIGN OF FIELD STUDIES TO DETERMINE THE IMPACTS AND ECOLOGICAL VALUE OF THE MAN-MADE HABITATS FORMED BY DIKE AND REVETMENT STRUCTURES IN THE LOWER Mississippi River, the aquatic habitat of a 50-mile reach of the river (mile 480 to 530 Above Head of Passes, AHP) was quantitatively mapped to determine spatial relationships among and within habitat types as a function of river stage and discharge. Twelve aquatic habitat types were defined within the study reach based on hydraulic, geomorphological, and ecological criteria: main channel, natural banks, revetted banks, sandbars, dike fields, permanent and temporary secondary channels, abandoned river channels(Types I and II), oxbow lakes, borrow pits, and inundated floodplain. By use of controlled aerial photography and hydrographic survey data, aquatic habitat surface acreages were computed for three river stages (low flow = +13.2 ft, medium flow = +24.6, and high flow = +38.4 ft on the Greenville, Mississippi, gage). Results of the habitat mapping revealed a significant change in total aquatic habitat acreage with changes in river stage and discharge. At the low flow stage 18,581 acres of habitat were present. Habitat area increased to 29,020 acres at medium flow and rose to 56,902 acres for high flow--a total increase of 222 percent in area over low flow conditions.

Book excerpt: Larval fish were collected in the Lower Mississippi River from 8 March to 13 November 1978 to describe variations in diversity and abundance of larval fish among nine types of habitats for the entire spawning season, investigate diel fluctuations in diversity and abundance, and evaluate replicate sampling procedures. The abandoned channel and oxbow lake habitats had similar larval populations; these habitats showed relatively low diversity and high densities of clupeids and centrarchids. Natural banks and revetted banks had high and similar diversities and abundance of larval fish. There were considerable variations in density and diversity among the four revetted bank stations sampled. The dike field habitat was characterized by a high diversity and moderate density of larval fish. All families of larval fish collected during the entire study were represented in the dike field habitat. The diversity and density of larval fish differed greatly among the six dike field stations sampled. Three of the four main channel stations sampled showed low diversity and density of larval fish. The fourth main channel station had high diversity of larval fish and high densities were observed on two sampling dated. Density of larval fish was low but diversity of larval fish was relatively high in the temporary secondary channel habitat. Density and diversity of larval fish were low in the permanent secondary channel and the sandbar habitats. A variance component analysis demonstrated that samples taken within a 1- to 2-hr time period of a diel cycle did not constitute significant (probability

This book was released on 1974 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of side channels and main channel borders as fish habitat was evaluated in three representative areas of the Middle Mississippi River. Fish, benthos, and plankton were collected during five seasonal samples in 1972-1973. Benthic organisms generally occurred in greater numbers in the main channel border habitat. No significant differences were observed between side channels and main channel borders for combined planktonic taxa. Minnows and small fish were nearly 6.0 times more abundant in seine collections from the side channels than in main channel borders. For the more abundant fish species, electrofishing and netting captured significantly more carp, bluegill, shortnose gar, black crappie, bigmouth buffalo, white crappie, and bowfin in the side channels than in adjacent main channel borders. Largemouth bass were found only in the side channels. Significantly greater numbers of freshwater drum were observed in main channel borders. Both the side channels and main channel border areas were important as fish habitat. Adverse environmental conditions and the relatively short duration of the project prevented assessment and documentation of the complete ecological relationship of these integral parts of a large riverine ecosystem.
