Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lavishly illustrated new book, the author of Early Life in Upper Canada and other famous histories of pioneer days, relates the story of the Canadian farm and farmer from the primitive to the machine age. Farm life and farm processes are pictured in fascinating detail, and Mr. Guillet quotes generously from books, newspapers, letters and hitherto unpublished archives material, using the words of those who actually witnessed the life of other days–the pioneers themselves, or the more observant of the numerous travellers who visited Canada during the period. The 450 illustrations contained in the two volumes of this work include many never before reproduced. A detailed list of contents and a full index enable the reader to find readily any topic of pioneer life to which he wishes to refer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1812, as the British and the Americans were on the brink of war in North America, Fort St. Joseph was not thought to be of much importance to the British cause. It was disregarded as a useless, poorly located post. But when war was delcared, the garrison at Fort St. Joseph pulled off a miracle: it captured the American Fort Mackinac, and for the remainder of the War of 1812 the British never relinquished control of the Upper Great Lakes. Built in the aftermath of the American Revolution, Fort St. joseph played an important role in the defence of Canada. And yet, when the war ended, the fort was abandoned, and almost forgotten. However, there were those who could not forget the heroics of 1812. They sought to restore the memory of the fort that was part of one of the defining moments in Canadian history. Determined individuals campaigned for government assistance and public support. Their efforts have paid off: since the 1960s, St. Joseph Island and the site of the fort have been revived as tourist destinations, and there are high hopes for an even greater tribute to the legacy of the fort and its soldiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christl Verduyn analyses Engel's work from a feminist literary perspective, examining Engel's concern with women's experiences and perception of the world, female identity and the social constraints on its development, female subjectivity and self, the mother-daughter relationship, and forces opposing women's artistic self-expression. Verduyn presents in-depth readings of both the novels and Engel's reflections on her experiences as a woman and a writer as found in her personal journals and other writings. Verduyn demonstrates the extent to which Engel's work not only deserves to be ranked with the best of Canadian literature but also enriches our understanding of women's experiences and broadens our view of women's worlds. Lifelines makes an important contribution to Canadian literature, women's studies, and the growing genre of life writing.

Book excerpt: There has been little written about Tenison Woods who as a significant figure in Australian Catholic Church life at the time of St Mary Mackillop, Australia's first Catholic Saint. This is a story about the work of the Sisters of St Joseph, an Australian Catholic Religious Order of women, founded by St Mary Mackillop, in Tasmania. An intriguing story of a group of women who were not part of the Centralised Josephite Sisters under Mary Mackillop, who for a variety of reasons were under the diocesan Catholic Bishop in Tasmania. The books documents their 125 year history from foundation right through to Vatican approval of the being brought under the Federation of Josephite Sisters in Australia.
