Book excerpt: Most aspects of South Africa's investment climate the location-specific factors that shape opportunities and incentives for firms to invest productively, create jobs, and grow are favorable. The majority of large, registered firms believe that the legal system is able to protect their property rights. Infrastructure is reliable. Tax rates are relatively low. The burden of regulation is comparable to other middle-income countrries. Few firms pay bribes. And most firms have adequate access to credit. In many dimensions, South Africa has a good investment climate. Consistent with this, large South African firms are very productive. Labor productivity is far higher than in the most productive low-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and compares favorably with other middle-income countries such as Brazil, Lithuania, Malaysia, and Poland. And although labor productivity in South Africa is slightly lower than in the most productive cities in China, it is over three times higher than in China as a whole. So, why hasn't South Africa been growing faster? As this title explores, while the investment climate is generally favorable, some problems remain. Firms appear to be particularly concerned about four areas: difficulty hiring skilled and educated workers, rigid labor regulations, exchange rate instability, and crime. Using rigorous statistical information on these and related topics, the book aims to assist policy makers and private sector stakeholders in developing reforms that will improve firm performance and growth.

However, the analysis identifies challenges incorporating climate sensitivity in the project appraisal, selection, budgeting, and fiscal risk management processes. Implementing targeted modifications in these areas, such as enhancing project appraisal and selection criteria to include climate impacts, improving mechanisms for tracking climate expenditures, and expanding fiscal risk analysis to cover climate-related risks, could strengthen Kenya's public investment management practices and promote greater climate resilience.

By creating opportunities and setting incentives for firms to invest and productively employ inputs, the investment climate is critical to economic growth and prosperity. Analyzing and comparing the investment climate of Brazil, India, and South Africa, three of today's largest emerging economies, this book presents policy makers with the scope of investment climate reforms in these countries. Inter- and intra-country benchmarking can be a starting point for dialogue between the government and private sector on reform priorities and help to encourage the sharing of best practices. Our hope is that this book will encourage and facilitate reform steps that can improve the investment climate in emerging economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private firms are at the forefront of the development process, providing more than 90 percent of jobs, supplying goods and services, and representing a significant source of tax revenues. Their ability to grow, create jobs, and reduce poverty depends critically on a well-functioning investment climate--defined as the policy, legal, and institutional arrangements underpinning the functioning of markets and the level of transaction costs and risks associated with starting, operating, and closing a business. The World Bank Group has provided extensive support to investment climate reforms. This evaluation by the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) assesses the relevance, effectiveness, and social value of World Bank Group support to investment climate reforms as it relates to concerns for inclusion and shared prosperity. IEG finds that the World Bank Group has supported a comprehensive menu of investment climate reforms and has improved investment climate in countries, as measured by number of laws enacted, streamlining of processes and time, or simple cost savings for private firms. However, the impact on investment, jobs, business formation, and growth is not straightforward. Regulatory reforms need to be designed and implemented with both economic and social costs and benefits in mind; IEG found that, in practice, World Bank Group support focuses predominantly on reducing costs to businesses. In supporting investment climate reforms, the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation use two distinct but complementary business models. Despite the fact that investment climate is the most integrated business unit in the World Bank Group, coordination is mostly informal, relying mainly on personal contacts. IEG recommends that the World Bank Group expand its range of diagnostic tools and integrate them in the areas of the business environment not yet covered by existing tools; develop an approach to identify the social effects of regulatory reforms on all groups expected to be affected by them beyond the business community; and exploit synergies by ensuring that World Bank and IFC staff improve their understanding of each other's work and business models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A climate catastrophe can be avoided, but only with a rapid and sustained investment in companies and projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To the surprise of many, this has already begun. Investors are abandoning fossil-fuel companies and other polluting industries and financing businesses offering climate solutions. Rising risks, evolving social norms, government policies, and technological innovation are all accelerating this movement of capital. Bruce Usher offers an indispensable guide to the risks and opportunities for investors as the world faces climate change. He explores the role that investment plays in reducing emissions to net zero by 2050, detailing how to finance the winners and avoid the losers in a transforming global economy. Usher argues that careful examination of climate solutions will offer investors a new and necessary lens on the future for their own financial benefit and for the greater good. Companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions will create great wealth, and, more importantly, they will provide a lifeline for humanity. Grounded in academic and industry research, Usher’s insights bring clarity to a complex and controversial topic while illuminating the people behind the numbers. This book sets out a practical and actionable plan for investors that will alter the course of climate change.

This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: This paper analyzes the performance of Kenya s tourism sector with a view to assessing tourism cluster cooperation, competitiveness and its sustainability impacts on the overall economy. The theoretical foundation is based on Porter s Diamond Model and builds on the cluster concept and typology. This integrates competitiveness and performance improvements within the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political dimensions. The results of the analysis provide possible strategic guidance for the public sector in regard to tourism policies. Similarly, it provides strategies for competitiveness, interaction, and sustainability between the public sector and the private sector. In order for Kenya to achieve its goal of improving and sustaining tourism earnings (where do we want to go?), I examined the nation s current position (where are we now?) and provided an analytical foundation for cluster development dialogue and design (how do we get there?). Chapter 1-5 examines the sector s external and internal environment with the help of the STEEP (Social, Technological, Economical, Environmental, and Political factors) analysis that builds in turn, on SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) as an analytical tool. In addition, Porter s model examines the cluster s performances, identifies factors that trigger development and sustainability, and the role of the governments and related institutions in the sector. After the agricultural sector, the tourism sector is the second largest contributor in foreign earnings. In 2008, the sector witnessed a major decline in revenues in as a result of post-election violence. Given that the tourism sector touches all sectors of the economy, the decline in tourism earnings was a huge blow to the nation as the sector employs more than 407,000 people directly and indirectly (World Travel and Tourism Council 2009). Furthermore, the sector has been susceptible to market price fluctuations, increasing competition, political instability, and the recent global recession. Kenya offers several natural, geographical, historical and cultural assets namely; wildlife, coastal beaches, alternative tourism, which include sports, hiking mountain-climbing, golf, sports, cruise tourism, safari rallies, among others. However, some of these areas are underdeveloped and offer opportunities for diversification of the tourism product and market. The national government s strategy targets [...]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic empowerment of women is increasingly seen as one of the most important forces behind economic growth and the fight against poverty. Indeed, women's economic participation in an economy as entrepreneurs, employees, and leaders is recognized as a measure of a country's dynamism and viability. 'Gender Dimensions of Investment Climate Reform' provides fresh solutions to common issues that women entrepreneurs face. It presents actionable, replicable, and scalable tools for promoting gender-sensitive investment climate reforms that would benefit both women and men. The book enables development practitioners and policy makers who are not gender specialists to diagnose gender issues in an investment climate; design creative and practical solutions and recommendations for addressing gender constraints; and monitor and evaluate the implementation of those recommendations.
