Book excerpt: This report is a review of the literature regarding propeller airplane far-field noise reduction. Near-field and cabin noise reduction are not specifically addressed. However, some of the approaches used to reduce far-field noise produce beneficial effects in the near-field and in the cabin. The emphasis is on propeller noise reduction but engine exhaust noise reduction by muffling is also addressed since the engine noise becomes a significant part of the aircraft noise signature when propeller noise is reduced. It is concluded that there is a substantial body of information available that can be used as the basis to reduce propeller airplane noise. The reason that this information is not often used in airplane design is the associated weight, cost, and performance penalties. It is recommended that the highest priority be given to research for reducing the penalties associated with lower operating RPM and propeller diameter while increasing the number of blades. Research to reduce engine noise and explore innovative propeller concepts is also recommended. Metzger, F. Book excerpt: This report considers the effectiveness of current noise regulations in Appendix F of FAR Part 36, examines the potential effectiveness of future technology to achieve further noise reduction, and evaluates a number of new concepts for noise certification procedures for propeller-driven small aircraft. The latter were based, in part, on results of a flight test program carried out with Cessna Aircraft Company, to evaluate the utility of takeoff noise tests and the possible use of sound exposure level as a suitable metric for noise certification of the subject aircraft. The study indicates that existing regulations have been effective in stimulating development of quieter propellers for the existing fleet of propeller-driven small aircraft. However, it does not appear economically feasible to achieve more noise reduction in most of this fleet using existing technology with the possible exceptions of some of the two-engine aircraft. However, application of future noise reduction technology, primarily for quieter propellers, should allow a reduction in current noise limits by about 6 dB and should reduce levels of the noisiest aircraft in the current fleet by as much as 10 dB. A takeoff test is appropriate for all propeller aircraft except those equipped with cruise-optimized fixed-pitch propellers. For this test, the current level flyover test appears to represent the noisiest operating condition.

The reductions in subjective response due to the ANC conditions were predicted with reasonable accuracy by reductions in measured loudness level. The first commercial application of this technique is in the case of active electronically controlled head sets. The next step will be the active noise cancellation in air ducts and in passenger cabins. The aim of this paper is to assess the possibilities of the anti-noise technique for reducing propeller noise. First, by a mathematical simulation the theoretical noise reduction on the ground was calculated and found to be promising for further investigations. In the case of the periodic engine and propeller noise, for example, with only a single anti-noise source the noise foot prints of the lower propeller harmonics can be reduced by up to 10 dB. In laboratory tests the theoretical values will be confirmed experimentally. For cancellation of the periodic noise one can use synchronous anti-noise generators. Compared with the engine and propeller noise the reduction of jet noise by the anti-noise technique is much more difficult. Therefore a sensor and controlling units are necessary because of the stochastic nature of jet noise. Since aircraft noise is a severe problem all methods are to be considered.
