High-quality DEMs can now be derived directly from airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point-cloud data of high spatial density if the derivation process can be verified. However, LiDAR is relatively new compared with other technologies for terrain data collection, and, although offering the potential for providing better spatial resolution than those that have been routinely available before, will not diffuse among DEM users until the results of meeting the verification challenge are favourable enough to inspire re-organisation of spatial data in decision support for catchment management and other third-tier-of-government authorities. By way of exemplification, the research presented in this thesis concerned ways of improving the processing of the airborne LiDAR data for high-quality DEM generation in terms of both accuracy and efficiency, and explored the applications of LiDAR-derived DEMs in the region of the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, Victoria, Australia. This thesis begins with a review of the traditional technologies for terrain data collection and DEM generation and compares them with the LiDAR technology. Accordingly, a review of the recently-reported advances in LiDAR data deployment for DEM generation is followed by reports of experiments designed to improve selection and deployment of LiDAR data filtering, modelling methods and data reduction, and the achievement of vertical accuracy for different land covers. Also reported are results of deployment of LiDAR data for ground truthing, and application of LiDAR data for the extraction of drainage networks on an area of deranged drainage: the Victorian Volcanic Plain. The show that: (a) the issues of filtering, modelling techniques, interpolation methods, DEM resolution, and data reduction are critical and must be considered carefully when using LiDAR data for a high-quality DEM generation; (b) it is efficient to use survey marks for the accuracy assessment of LiDAR data. Normal distribution must be tested in order to select a suitable measure for the accuracy assessment of LiDAR data over different land covers; (c) LiDAR data reduction can improve the terrain production efficiency without compromising the product quality. The deployment of breaklines made a significant contribution to improving the accuracy of terrain models while allowing for data reduction; (d) it demonstrated the practical feasibility of applying ground control points from LiDAR intensity image and LiDAR-derived DEM in image orthorectification. The resultant orthoimage accuracy was shown to be superior to that achieved by using (lower accuracy) data sources such as those from Vicmap data; and (e) the LiDAR-derived DEM offers the capability of extracting and delineating the drainage networks in much more detail in low¬relief terrain, including areas in which drainage is barely coherent; The advantages of using LiDAR-derived DEM over the lower-accuracy DEM emerge in terms of stream order, stream number and stream length.

The following study investigates the accuracy of LiDAR derived DEMs by calculating the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of multiple interpolation methods with grid cells ranging from 0. 5 to 10-meters. A raster cell with smaller dimensions will drastically increase the amount of detail represented in the DEM by increasing the number of elevation values across the study area. Increased horizontal resolutions have raised the accuracy of the interpolated surfaces and the contours generated from the digitized landscapes. As the raster grid cells decrease in size, the level of detail of hydrological processes will significantly improve compared to coarser resolutions including the publicly available National Elevation Datasets (NEDs). Utilizing a LiDAR derived DEM with the lowest RMSE as the `ground truth', watershed boundaries were delineated for a sub-basin of the Clear Creek Watershed within the territory of the Seneca Nation of Indians located in Southern Erie County, NY. An investigation of the watershed area and boundary location revealed considerable differences comparing the results of applying different interpretation methods on DEM datasets of different horizontal resolutions. Stream networks coupled with watersheds were used to calculate peak flow values for the 10-meter NEDs and LiDAR derived DEMs.

However, little research has been done to investigate the accuracy of using airborne LiDAR to perform measurement tasks common to Forest Engineering. This thesis contains two manuscripts investigating different measurement scenarios. The first manuscript examines the use of airborne LiDAR to measure existing forest roads in support of a road assessment under four different canopy conditions. It was found that along existing centerlines the LiDAR data had a vertical RMSE of 0.28 m and a horizontal RMSE of 1.21 m. Road grades were estimated to within 1% slope of the value measured in the field and horizontal curve radii were estimated with an average absolute error of 3.17 m. The results suggest that airborne LiDAR is an acceptable method to measure forest road grade, but some caution should be used in measuring horizontal curve radii, particularly on sharp curves. The second manuscript compares profile corridor measurements using airborne LiDAR-derived elevations across different forest canopy types and terrain slopes ranging from 37 to 49%. Both LiDAR-derived DEM and raw LiDAR point elevations were compared to field data. The DEM elevations had an average RMSE error of 0.43 m across all canopy types compared to the field data, while the nearest LiDAR point had an average RMSE of 0.49 m compared to the field data. A skyline payload analysis suggested that profiles based on the DEM outperformed profiles based on nearest point elevations by 5% on average when compared to the field measured profiles. Results suggest that a forest engineer should consider using the DEM value rather than the nearest LiDAR point elevation for terrain elevations at discrete locations, particularly when forest canopy occludes locations of interest.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in remote-sensing technologies and analysis methods, specifically airborne-LiDAR elevation data and corresponding geographical information system (GIS) tools, present new opportunities for automated and rapid fluvial geomorphic (FGM) assessments that can cover entire watersheds. In this thesis, semi-automated GIS tools are used to extract channel centerlines and bankfull width values from digital elevation models (DEM) for five New England watersheds. For each study site, four centerlines are mapped. LiDAR and NED lines are delineated using ArcGIS spatial analyst tools with high-resolution (1-m to 2-m) LiDAR DEMs or USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) DEMs, respectively. Resampled LiDAR decreases LiDAR DEM resolution and then runs spatial analyst tools. National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) lines are mapped by the USGS. All mapped lines are compared to centerlines delineated from photography and LiDAR DEMs. Bankfull widths at each site are determined through three methods. Regional regression equations are applied using variables derived from LiDAR and NED DEMs separately, producing two sets of width results. Additionally, the Hydrogeomorphological Geoprocessing Toolset (HGM) is used to extract widths from LiDAR data. Widths are also estimated visually from aerial photos and LiDAR DEMs. Widths measured directly in the field or derived from field-data are used as a baseline for comparison. I find that with a minimal amount of preprocessing, specifically through DEM resampling, LiDAR data can be used to model a channel that is highly correlated with the shape and location of the mapped channel. NED-derived channels model the mapped channel shape with even greater accuracy, and model the channel location only minimally less accurately. No tool used in this study accurately extracted bankfull width values, but analysis of LiDAR data by the HGM toolset did capture details that could not be resolved using regression equations. Overall, I conclude that automated, computerized LiDAR interpretation needs to improve significantly for the expense of data collection to be cost-effective at a watershed scale.
