Book Synopsis The Courtship Novel, 1740-1820 by : Katherine Sobba Green
Download or read book The Courtship Novel, 1740-1820 written by Katherine Sobba Green and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from her first London assembly to her wedding day was the narrow span of autonomy for a middle-class Englishwoman in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. For many women, as Katherine Sobba Green shows, the new ideal of companionate marriage involved such thoroughgoing revisions in self-perception that a new literary form was needed to represent their altered roles. That the choice among suitors ideally depended on love and should not be decided on any other grounds was a principal theme among a group of heroine-centered novels published between 1740 and 1820. During these decades, some two dozen writers, most of them women, published such courtship novels. Specifically aiming them at young women readers, these novelists took as their common purpose the disruption of established ideas about how dutiful daughters and prudent young women should comport themselves during courtship. Reading a wide range of primary texts, Green argues that the courtship novel was a feminized genre—written about, by, and for women. She challenges contemporary readers to appreciate the subtleties of early feminism in novels by Eliza Haywood, Mary Collyer, Charlotte Lennox, Samuel Richardson, Frances Brooke, Fanny Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane West, Mary Brunton, Maria Edgeworth, and Jane Austen—to recognize that these courtship novelists held in common a desire to reimagine the subject positions through which women understood themselves.

Book Synopsis Fictional Transfigurations of Jesus by : Theodore Ziolkowski
Download or read book Fictional Transfigurations of Jesus written by Theodore Ziolkowski and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-04-12 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many novels revolve round the figure of Jesus. Some of the finest of them are defined by Ziolkowski as fictional transfigurations of Jesus. They share a modern hero patterned on Jesus the culture-hero, whose life consisted of the motifs of the last supper, lonely agony, betrayal, trial, and crucifixion. The aesthetic challenge of adapting this most familiar story for their generation has attracted an unusual number of great writers, among them Papini, Kazantzakis, Hesse, Mann, Greene, Faulkner, and Gore Vidal. The form began with the new image of a humanized Jesus which developed in the 19th century. The interest in religious paranoia and hysteria at the turn of the century instantly expanded its potentialities as novelists began to explore the theme of christomania. This was followed by studies of Jesus as a mythic figure and then Marxist-oriented portraits of Comrade Jesus. Finally the form became inverted into parody in the Fifth Gospels in which not Jesus, but Judas, is the central figure.

Book Synopsis Hollywood Highbrow by : Shyon Baumann
Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.
Book Synopsis Queen's University by : Hilda Neatby
Download or read book Queen's University written by Hilda Neatby and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1978-12-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of Grant inevitably dominates this volume, but full recognition is given to other builders and preservers of Queen's, notably William Snodgrass, the pilot who weathered the storms of the Sixties and Seventies, and Daniel Miner Gordon, who presided over the secularization of the university in the early years of this century. Outstanding scholars, teachers, and administrators such as Watson, Williamson, MacKerras, Macnaughton, Dupuis, Shortt, Cappon, Goodwin, and Chown also figure prominently. The author examines in detail the role of the Board of Trustees, the Senate, and the undergraduate Alma Mater Society in the development of Queen's, and explores the complex relationships with the Presbyterian Church, the sister institutions in Toronto, and the provincial government. She shows how the distinctive character of Queen's was shaped by the Scottish heritage, evident in an emphasis upon flexible curricula, close faculty-student relations, and the virtues of student self-government, as well as in a sturdy independence in the face of repeated pressure for the concentration of higher education in Ontario. Imbued with a warm appreciation of the traditions of Queen's University and a scholar's critical detachement, this book is an important contribution to the history of institutional growth in Canada.
