Book excerpt: An approximate method of calculating the deformation of wings of uniform thickness having swept, M or W, Lambda, and swept-tip plan forms is presented. The method employs an adjustment to the elementary beam theory to account for the effect of the triangular root portion portion of a swept wing on the deformation of the outboard section of the wing. To demonstrate the general applicability of the method, the modified elementary theory is applied to the more comples M or W, Lambda, and swept-tip plan forms as well as to swept plan forms. For the purpose of calculating angles of attack, it is shown that the unmodified elementary beam theory applied to that part of the wing outboard of the root triangle produces satisfactory results. However, for calculating deflections it is necessary to include the effects of the root-triangle deformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Span load distributions of swept-back wings have been calculated. The method used was to replace the wing with a bound vortex at the quarter-chord line and to calculate the downwash due to the system of bound and trailing vortices to conform at the three-quarter-chord line to the slope of the flat-plate wing surface. Results are given for constant-chord and 5:1 tapered plan forms, for swee-pback angles of 0, 30 and 45 degresss, and for aspect ratios of 3, 6, and 9. Some comments on the stalling of swept-back wings are included.

Book excerpt: The spanwise and chordwise distribution of loading, the lift, and the induced drag of a swept-back wing of slender plan form are developed by means of linearized lifting-surface theory. The results are applicable for all free-stream Mach numbers. The term slender implies that the ratio of the reduced span to over-all length of the wing is small.

This book was released on 1949 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of modifying existing correction factors of lifting-surface theory to account approximately for the effects of sweep has been derived, and these factors have been applied to existing lifting-line theories for the lift and damping in roll of swept wings. A comparison with experimental data in the low-speed and low lift range indicated good agreement for wings of any plan form. If the Glauert-Prandtl transformation is used, the formulas obtained can be applied to swept wings at subsonic speeds below the critical speed.

Book excerpt: The damping-in-roll parameter C(iota)(p) is calculated theoretically for triangular wings on cylindrical bodies and for a class of wings with sweptback plan forms. The analysis is based on the usual assumptions of linearized compressible-flow theory together with the added restrictions that at the free-stream Mach number M(omicron) the product of lM(omicron)(2) and the streamwise velocity gradient is small.

Book excerpt: The 7-point method of Weissinger is used to calculate the span loading in roll, lateral center of pressure, and damping in roll for wings having various aspect ratios, sweep angles, and taper ratios. The applicability of the method to the determination of certain other aerodynamic derivatives is investigated, and corrections for the first-order effects of compressibility are indicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written to teach students the nature of transonic flow and its mathematical foundation, this book offers a much-needed introduction to transonic aerodynamics. The authors present a quantitative and qualitative assessment of subsonic, supersonic and transonic flow around bodies in two and three dimensions. The book reviews the governing equations and explores their applications and limitations as employed in modeling and computational fluid dynamics. Some concepts, such as shock and expansion theory, are examined from a numerical perspective. Others, including shock-boundary-layer interaction, are discussed from a qualitative point of view. The book includes 60 examples and more than 200 practice problems. The authors also offer analytical methods such as Method of Characteristics (MOC) that allow readers to practice with the subject matter. The result is a wealth of insight into transonic flow phenomena and their impact on aircraft design, including compressibility effects, shock and expansion waves, shock-boundary-layer interaction and aeroelasticity.

Book excerpt: In "Aerodynamic Principles of Flight Vehicles" Argyris Panaras examines the fundamentals of vortices and shock waves, aerodynamic estimation of lift and drag, airfoil theory, boundary layer control, and high-speed, high-temperature flow. Individual chapters address vortices in aerodynamics, transonic and supersonic flows, transonic/supersonic aircraft configurations, and high-supersonic/hypersonic flows, beginning with definitions and historical data, and then describing present-day status and current research challenges. Emphasis is given to flow control, to the evolution of flight vehicle shapes as flight speed has increased, and to discoveries that enabled breakthrough developments in flight. The book: examines why various equations and technologies were developed, explains major contributors in areas such as vortices and aircraft wakes, drag buildup, sonic boom, and shock wave-boundary layer interactions, among others, and helps readers apply concepts from the material to their own projects. Archival and encyclopedic, "Aerodynamic Principles of Flight Vehicles" is a superb reference for aeronautical students and professionals alike. Although most beneficial to readers with a working knowledge of aerodynamics, it is accessible to anyone with an introductory understanding of the field.
