Excerpt: ...implied in Hesiod--conquests such as must certainly have been going on, and must certainly have left exaggerated narratives. So, too, with "the sons of god and the daughters of men" in the Hebrew story. When we remember the reprobation that has everywhere been visited on the intermarriaere of a conquering caste and a subject caste--when we remember that in. Greek belief it was a transgression for the race of gods to fall in love with the race of men--when we remember that in our own feudal times union of nobles with serfs was a crime; we shall have little difficulty in seeing how there originated the story of the fall of the angels. Any one who, after considering this evidence, remembers that from the names and natures ascribed by existing savage peoples to Europeans, legends of "gods and men" are even now arising, will, I think, scarcely hesitate. Kemaining doubt will be further diminished by reading the legend of the Quiches, which gives, with sufficient clearness, the story of an invading race who, seizing an elevated region, and holding in terror the natives of the lower lands, became the deities of the surrounding country, and their mountain residence the local Olympus. (See Appendix A.) 201. This brings us once more to the Aryan gods, as seen from another point of view. That we may judge which hypothesis best fits the facts, let us first observe how the early Greeks actually conceived their gods: ignoring wholly the question how they got their conceptions. And let us compare their pantheon with the pantheon of another race--say that of the Fijians. The Greek god is everywhere presented to us under the guise of a powerful man; as is the Fijian. Among the Fijians, gods "sometimes assume the human form, ...

Book excerpt: The republication of this book is eminently fitting at this time. Jay Rumney's Herbert Spencer's Sociology first appeared in 1937. In that year Talcott Parsons, citing Crane Brinton, declared: "Spencer is dead. But who killed him and how?" It was the thesis of Parsons' famous The Structure of Social Action that the evolution of scientific theory had put an end to Spencer. For more than a generation the man whose name had been synonymous with sociology was, or so it seemed, repressed and forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Spencer sought to unify all of the sciences and ethics under a common set of theoretical principles loosely derived from the physics of his time and outlined in First Principles (1862). The Principles of Sociology was a later work in Spencer's grand scheme, with the fi rst installments appearing in 1874 and continuing until 1896. The re-issue of the complete volumes of this great work will stimulate renewed interest in Spencer's sociology, not just as an historical curiosity, but as a body of work that can still inform sociology. Indeed, at a time when it seems sociology has mined its classics for all the gold they contain, Spencer's work provides a "mother lode" of new treasures. Sociologists and others will be surprised at the profound insights they will fi nd in The Principles of Sociology. This complete three volume set of The Principles is divided into eight "Parts." Part I sets up the approach for the rest of the volumes. Here, Spencer distinguishes the inorganic, organic, and superorganic realms of the universe, with the most important comparison being the differences between the organic and superorganic. The most well-known sections appear in Part II on "The Introductions of Sociology" where the similarities and differences between superorganic and organic bodies are introduced. However, there is much more to Part II because here the basic theory is developed, which still informs contemporary sociology. Approximately two-thirds of The Principles of Sociology is dedicated to analysis of human institutional systems. In these pages, which comprise Parts III-VIII of The Principles, Spencer mobilizes even more data to develop specifi c principles about the operation of institutional systems. The Principles of Sociology is filled with insights and still worthwhile principles on the dynamics of human organization. Portrayals of Spencer as a naive functionalist and advocate of laissez-faire are inaccurate and unfair, as these volumes demonstrate. Spencer presents us with a set of principles about the operation of human societies. This book will be essential to sociologists, and others professionally interested in social science theory and the history of ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) was a preeminent British neurologist in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He began to establish that standing in the 1860s, when he incorporated the evolutionary association psychology of Herbert Spencer into his early analyses of 'loss of speech' (aphasia). Jackson also benefitted from his early connection with the National Hospital, Queen Square, London, becoming its leading theorist. His nuanced theory of cerebral localization was derived from (1) his clinical observations of (what Charcot later called) Jacksonian epilepsy, in combination with (2) his innovation to think about neurophysiological events at the cellular level, as well as from (3) David Ferrier's primate localization data. The result was our modern conception of the seizure focus. The latter was crucial to the beginnings of modern 'brain surgery,' especially at the hands of Victor Horsley. Jackson's influence on the neurophysiology of Charles Sherrington is widely acknowledged but not well defined. In the larger Victorian culture, Jackson was a friend of George Henry Lewes, who was George Eliot's companion. Lewes attributed 'sensibility' to everything in the nervous system, thus maintaining a monist position on the mind-body relation, whereas Jackson maintained a form of psycho-physical parallelism that was actually dualist ('Concomitance'). Throughout his life Jackson had an interest in insanity, which he viewed from the point of view of Spencerian evolution and dissolution. The latter was an important component of Freud's psychoanalysis, which Freud took from Jackson. Late in his life Jackson defined the 'uncinate group of fits,' which was his definition of temporal lobe epilepsy"--
