Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse and Its Relatives The following popular, and yet, I hope, scientifi cally accurate, account of the natural history of the more important representatives of the horse family, inclusive of the older domesticated breeds and its extinct forerunners, will, I venture to think, appeal to a large circle of readers. For breeders, racing men, antiquarians, naturalists, and big-game hunters ought all to find something of interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quincy the Horse Books, for K-4, will appeal to children who love animals and want to learn more about them. The first book, Quincy Finds A New Home, introduces a red horse named Quincy. It is about the importance of friendship. Quincy's life is turned upside down when he gets a new owner and is taken to a new home, the biggest barn he has ever seen. There are horse shows every Sunday but Quincy does not know how to jump and win ribbons. He struggles with this troubling secret until he makes a new friend, an old horse named Beau. When Quincy confides in Beau, he finds an unexpected answer to his problem. This comforting story is a debut for New Mexico author/illustrator team, Camille Matthews and Michelle Black and shows a knowledge and love of horses and attention to details of horse life that instills the book with authenticity. Through an exploration of the whole range of Quincy's feelings, worries and observations, author Camille Matthews encourages young readers to empathize with him as he tries to make sense of the changes and challenges he is experiencing. Further fostering an in depth experience, Black's artistic style is realistic but at the same time rich with color and detail. Her illustrations fulfill the concept of the picture book as a child's first experience of art. The vibrant artwork of the Quincy the Horse Books make them worth a look.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder-Book of Horses The old charioteer always slept soundly in the morning, and seldom awoke until he heard his young sister, the maiden whom men call Aurora, rapping at the door of his bedroom, and making her voice echo through the halls of the Dawn. Up, up, brother Helios! She would cry. It is time for you to begin your journey again. Up, and delight the world once more with your shin ing morning face and your life-giving presence! Then Helios would hasten to the meadows where his steeds were feeding, and would call them each by name: Come hither, beautiful creatures! Hasten, for Aurora calleth. E65, thou glowing one! Ethon, thou of the burning name! Bronte, thou thunderer! Sterope, thou swifter than light ning! Come quickly! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Thoroughbred Hence mv only endeavors have been to bring this book down to date and modern ize its contents so far as practicable. The great world is in a great hurry just now, and has but little time 'to devote to the perusal of ancient history. So I deal with horses of the last sixty years as much as possible, referring the reader to the works of Col. Bruce for the old days in Virginia; and to Mr. Osborne's work for the ancient occurrences on the turf in England and Ireland. They were both better writers than 1_ am and had ihore extensive libraries upon which to draw for information. Hence 1 make no claim for any great amount of originality in this book, but I can claim truth fully that its construction is more orderly and methodical than that of any book that has yet been published on this subject, either in America or in Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Letters on the Horse, Master, and Donkey The following letter not having been accepted by the Editor to whom it was forwarded, the same is now published, as also a second, and now a third. It has been conjectured that writings of this description might tend to the detriment of the Turf, but the real intention of the Author is to prevent the Turf tending farther to the detriment of Horses, and also to save the Innocents, who still roam about, from being cajoled into pur chasing any deformed or irrecoverably damaged animals, whether offered by the Turf Kings, Turf Churchmen, or Turf Copers; and it is hoped the production may yet prove of benefit both to the Horse and the Rider. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years With the Horse The following instance may serve as a guide for taming all obstinate or vicious horses. It shows the superiority of moral suasion over cruel, brute force. A gentleman having bought an apparently untameable but splendid horse and declared his resolve to conquer or die, led him from his stable in the presence of an excited crowd, put a saddle on him, buckled it with uncommon tightness, and after trying the stirrups, to see that all was sound and right, with a single bound was in his saddle. Now commenced a scene of rearing, and springing, and pitching unlike anything ever before witnessed. In retaliation, the rider commenced using the cow-hide freely over the rump, about the sides and legs of the animal, and at length over his head, eyes, ears and mouth. It was evidently a battle between two equally determined, but unequally powerful opponents - a trial of animal strength - an exhibition of dexterity - ou the part of the animal, to throw off the disagreeable load; on the part of the disagreeable load - the man - to conquer, to subdue, to main tain his position. But the horse, being the stouter of the two, was the victor, and would have thrown his load a rod at least from his back, but for the rider's foot having caught in the stir rup; and in that plight, the horse would soon have kicked his brains out, if he had any, but for the interference and assistance of the by-standers, who soon liberated the prisoner from his critical position. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Torrance-Clendennin Episode and Other Horse Stor: Racing, Hunting, Steeplechasing, Clubs and Club Life, Etc HE pages of this book contain records of events which actually took place just as they are de scribed. The author hopes that these stories will appeal to that increasing class of Americans who enjoy club life and have both the inclination and the leisure to make the noblest of the brute creation, the horse and the dog, their companions in sport and field. The bonds of sympathetic affection which link hu manity with these, its most devoted friends among the animals, have never been more profoundly felt than at this time. The author will feel amply repaid if these o'er true tales, shall give the reader as much pleas ure in perusing as he has found in their writing. Some of these sketches have appeared in print before in different American and English journals, and the author begs to thank his former publishers for their courtesy in allowing this reproduction.
