Book excerpt: Honey bees collect two types of food material; nectar and pollen. With the collection of nectar there is no evidence that there is any selection based on its nutrient value, other than as a source of energy (their dietary carbohydrate). Pollen is their source of protein and lipids (fats). By contrast, foraging for this vital material is much more complex and seems to be based on the nutritional value of the pollen. Bees will forage for easily collected pollens but will also go out of their way to obtain supplies of a diverse range of other pollens that may require much more effort. How much and how often a beekeeper needs to feed honey bee colonies depends on beekeeping practices, e.g. how much of their honey is harvested. But the environmental conditions to which they are exposed (primarily forage availability and climate) also needs to be taken into account. This booklet offers advice on what materials can safely be used to feed bees, at what times of year feeding may be required and how to assess their needs. Also discussed is the means of delivery; the types feeder that can be used and their pros and cons.

Book excerpt: How honeybees make collective decisions—and what we can learn from this amazing democratic process Honeybees make decisions collectively—and democratically. Every year, faced with the life-or-death problem of choosing and traveling to a new home, honeybees stake everything on a process that includes collective fact-finding, vigorous debate, and consensus building. In fact, as world-renowned animal behaviorist Thomas Seeley reveals, these incredible insects have much to teach us when it comes to collective wisdom and effective decision making. A remarkable and richly illustrated account of scientific discovery, Honeybee Democracy brings together, for the first time, decades of Seeley's pioneering research to tell the amazing story of house hunting and democratic debate among the honeybees. In the late spring and early summer, as a bee colony becomes overcrowded, a third of the hive stays behind and rears a new queen, while a swarm of thousands departs with the old queen to produce a daughter colony. Seeley describes how these bees evaluate potential nest sites, advertise their discoveries to one another, engage in open deliberation, choose a final site, and navigate together—as a swirling cloud of bees—to their new home. Seeley investigates how evolution has honed the decision-making methods of honeybees over millions of years, and he considers similarities between the ways that bee swarms and primate brains process information. He concludes that what works well for bees can also work well for people: any decision-making group should consist of individuals with shared interests and mutual respect, a leader's influence should be minimized, debate should be relied upon, diverse solutions should be sought, and the majority should be counted on for a dependable resolution. An impressive exploration of animal behavior, Honeybee Democracy shows that decision-making groups, whether honeybee or human, can be smarter than even the smartest individuals in them.

Book excerpt: The importance of pollinator species to man's survival and the functioning of the world's ecosystems is recognised. Environmental and other stressors have taken their toll on many pollinator species and their abundance. The European Honey bee (Apis mellifera) and man have had a long mutually beneficial relationship and it is vital that this continues. Like all organisms, honey bees need food and shelter to ensure their survival and ability to thrive. A key factor in achieving this is the understanding of the role of good nutrition in honey bee biology. This book considers the role of good nutrition for honey bees in the British Isles and the implications of these requirements for beekeepers and their beekeeping management techniques and for those who manage land on which forage for honey bees and other pollinators might be grown. About the Authors David Aston, B.Sc., MSc., Ph.D., NDB is a biologist and a Master Beekeeper having kept bees continuously for 40 years in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He holds the National Diploma in Beekeeping (NDB), has been Board Chairman and a current member of its Executive. He has contributed to the work of the British Beekeepers' Association (BBKA) for many years and has served as Chair of Trustees and is now a Past President. He is also a Trustee of the CB Dennis British Beekeepers' Research Trust. Sally Bucknall, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., CBiol. is a biologist and environmentalist. She has been a Trustee and Chair of Trustees for the charity Garden Organic (Henry Doubleday Research Association, HDRA). Book excerpt: The aim of this booklet is to help beekeepers to better understand honey itself and to harvest and prepare it for home use or sale retaining as much of its essential properties as possible. What exactly is honey, for it is certainly a lot more than a solution of various sugars in water? If we are to produce good honey it is important to understand how it should be handled in all stages between the hive and jar because in reality it is quite a delicate product. Stories about finding four thousand year old honey in Egyptian tombs and "and it was just as good as the day it was put there" are just that - stories. There are many similarities between honey and wines; they both need great care in their production, handing and storage if they are to develop and retain their full potential. It is generally accepted that the `best` honey comes straight from the comb (cut comb or sections). The various processes that we use to get pristine honey from the comb into a jar all have the potential to damage it in some way. In Britain we currently get a premium price for home-produced honey (the envy of beekeepers in many other parts of the world) and it is our responsibility to see that we bring a top quality product to market.

Since her well-being is linked to the well-being of the entire colony, the ability to find her among the residents of the hive is an essential beekeeping skill. In QueenSpotting, experienced beekeeper and professional “swarm catcher” Hilary Kearney challenges readers to “spot the queen” with 48 fold-out visual puzzles — vivid up-close photos of the queen hidden among her many subjects. QueenSpotting celebrates the unique, fascinating life of the queen bee chronicles of royal hive happenings such as The Virgin Death Match, The Nuptual Flight — when the queen mates with a cloud of male drones high in the air — and the dramatic Exodus of the Swarm from the hive. Readers will thrill at Kearney’s adventures in capturing these swarms from the strange places they settle, including a Jet Ski, a couch, a speed boat, and an owl’s nesting box. Fascinating, fun, and instructive, backyard beekeepers and nature lovers alike will find reason to return to the pages again and again.
