There is in the nature of things a law of dancing which, at a crisis of great happiness or exaltation, sets the thoughts and the emotions leaping rhythmically to time. All men, even those who would be most surprised to be reckoned among the poets or the followers of the poets, are subject to this law. Every child is a poet from the age at which he learns to beat a silver spoon on the table in numbers. He likes to make not only a noise but a noise with something of the regularity of an echo. He coos with delight when he is taken on an elder's knee and is trotted up and down to the measure of This is the way the ladies ride, with its steady advance of pace till the ultimate fury of the country clown's gallop. Later on, he himself trots gloriously in reins with bells that jingle in rhyme as he runs. His pleasure in swings, in sitting behind a horse, in travelling in a train, with its puff as regular as an uncle's watch and its wheels. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Poetry: An Anthology From 1866 to 1880 the United States was in a chaotic and frankly materialistic condition; it was full of political scandals, panics, frauds, malfeasance in high places. The moral fiber was flabby; the country was apathetic, cor rupt and contented. As in all such periods of national unconcern, the artists turned from life altogether, pre occupying themselves with the by-products of art: with method and technique, with elaborate and artificial con ceits, with facile ideas rather than fundamental ideals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cassell's Anthology of English Verse The selection of poems for this anthology has evidently been made with great care. Mr. Glover has followed the doctrine of Wordsworth in a famous passage of the Prelude, that the young reader must know where he has friends, and that these friends are more likely to be found among poets of his own generation than among even the greater spirits of a remote past. Whatever may be the range ulti mately attained, it is evident that a child will enter more easily into the worlds made for him by the poets of his own time. Mr. Glover's selection passes lightly over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, dwells a little longer on the eighteenth, and ends by introducing the reader to an unusual number of modern poets. In the anthology one-half the ground is covered by writers whose names come after Tennyson's in the list. The introduction of so large a proportion of modern poetry is beneficial to the teacher as well as the pupil. It will give him the feeling that he is working with a new instrument specially designed for his purpose and shaped to fit his hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary Verse Anthology: Favorite Poems Selected From the Magazine Contemporary Verse 1916-1920 The fact is that it is always the bizarre and eccentric in contemporary art that is forced upon our attention. The quiet, sincere painter, composer, or writer has to make his or her way slowly. Thus while the imitators of Whitman and various imported cults have been ramp ing on the American literary stage, it might well be supposed that Poe, Longfellow, Whittier, and Emerson have had no successors. Yet these latter poets were read by millions when Whitman was at best read by thousands. Far be it from me to underestimate the growing importance of Whitman, but on the other hand, it is merely narrow to condemn the American public because it still prefers the simpler, clearer work Of the other poets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1917: And Yearbook of American Poetry The influence of this kind of criticism can do more harm to American poetry at present than any other influence whatever. The harm it does is by misrepresenting the art. If the public heedssuch criticism, audiences will diminish, and the consequent discouragement of the poets them selves will produce a decline in creativeness. It must be realised that no poet of to - day works and starves in obscurity till chance or influence brings a patron to reward him with fame and a compe tence, as was true in the past; fame and fortune for the modern poet are the gifts of public recog nition and appreciation, and if these do not come before youth advances to that vague borderland where it is lost, the modern poet gives the best of himself to other things. That poets have made money during the past few years is no proof that poetry to-day is less an art than a profession, but under the dispensation of modern democracy it does prove that poetry must make good business to flourish as an art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthology of Modern Slavonic Literature: In Prose and Verse Of these languages, Polish, Czech, Croat and Wendie are written in the Latin alphabet, adapted to their particular phonetic needs by the use of various diacritic signs. The remainder employ the so-called Cyrillic alphabet. This difference of alphabet is the only real distinction between Croat and Serbian. It should be noticed that the Cyrillic alphabet is not identical in the case of all the'languages that use it. Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian and Bulgarian have the bulk of the letters in common but each language has also a few characters peculiar to itself. As a whole, the Slav languages are dis tinguished by striking similarities of structure and vocabulary. The so-called aspects of the verb are common to them all; while the numerous noun inflections are lacking only in Bulgarian. This language, it may be added, differs from the rest also by the use of a definite article, which is suffixed to the noun. The same construction exists in two other Balkan, but non-slav languages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology of Modern Bohemian Poetry The Bohemian or Czech language belongs, together with Polish, to the western group of the Slavonic languages, thus being closely akin to Russian, Servian, and the minor members of this branch of speech. It is spoken by nearly ten millions of people in Bohemia, Moravia, Austrian Silesia, and, in the slightly modified form of Slovak, in the northern districts of Hungary. In common with the other Slavonic languages, it displays a high degree of inflection. The nouns have seven cases, and the verbal structure displays a remarkable variety and intricacy. Bohemian forms derivatives and compounds with great ease, and is remarkably vigorous and expressive. As a rule, it employs far more purely native words than Polish, but some of the modern writers are beginning to introduce words of foreign origin to a greater extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Russian Poetry: An Anthology This volume heaps the anthological Pelion upon the Ossa of translation. It aims to present the lyrical poetry of Russia for the last hundred years by a selection of poems translated by the editors. Within the fences thus set up lay a wide foreign field to pick from: the old-fashioned garden overrun by the rank growth of exotic flowers, beautiful weeds outflanking the hothouse plants. The principle of selection was, so far as might be, aesthetic. Poems were chosen less for their representative quality than for their immediate worth and, of course, their ability to stand the test of translation. In view of the pioneer character of this work, however, some concession was made to historical considerations, and, therefore, part of the material included may appear rather jejune and vieux jeu. The effort was to give a brief general glimpse of the classic poets and to treat in greater detail the moderns and contemporaries who are, to the translators, as to the readers, more of a living actuality. The difficulties of selection are obvious. You may add, you may alter the choice how you will, but the sin of omission will cling round it still. In this case the problem was sharpened by the rigors of translation. These were not mere flowers for the plucking. They had to be transplanted into strange soil, which was not hospitable to them all. Translation has been likened to "the wrong side of a Turkey carpet." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
