Book excerpt: Winston Churchill once remarked, "It is a good thing for an educated man to read books of quotations." This is a result of the immense power that is concealed in the thoughts of great individuals. Quotations not only make us wiser, they help to swiftly connect us to the most sacred inner thoughts of an individual. Joseph Roux finely states "a fine quotation is a diamond in the hand of a man of wit and a pebble in the hand of a fool." This book has been compiled to act as a direct and insightful source of African maxims. It covers categories such as family life, food, friendship, love beauty and wisdom. It consists of the best maxims from the many wonderful countries that make up the unique continent of Africa. "If a child washes his hands he could eat with kings." "A child's fingers are not scalded by a piece of hot yam which his mother puts into his palm." "However long the night, the dawn will break." "To run is not necessarily to arrive." "Love is a despot who spares no one." "One thread for the needle, one love for the heart."

And in An Ancient African Wisdom Book, author Angela Chamblee analyzes The Instruction of Ptahhotep, one of the oldest textbooks on earth; a self-help book, it teaches good manners and ethics and provides advice about how to be successful in life. Aided by illustrations, An Ancient African Wisdom Book dissects this eighteen page book of maxims that was written 4,500 years ago and translates these maxims into information that can be applied to life today. The maxims provide advice on how to do the following: Effectively dispute with a supervisor, peer, or subordinate Speak to a powerful person Deal with success Guard against greed Survive middle management Be a better listener Have a better marriage In addition to an explanation of the maxims, An Ancient African Wisdombook also includes teaching suggestions, writing assignments, group lessons, and commentary to help teachers formulate lesson plans to teach ancient African wisdom. Ptahhoteps book helps to lay the foundation for black literature and culture throughout the world, and it lays the ethical foundation for a golden age of African achievement.

Book excerpt: A collection of African wisdom gorgeously illustrated by artists from Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Canada, the United States and more. Aphorisms are universal. They give guidance, context and instruction for life's issues, and they help us understand each other and the world around us. We use them every day, yet never think about where they came from or why they exist. In this beautifully illustrated collection, Eric Walters brings us classic sayings from the places where this shared wisdom began. Ashanti, Sukuma, Akan and Kikuyu: all of these cultures use the portable and easily shared knowledge contained in aphorisms, and from these cultures and more this communal knowledge spread. This book is a celebration of art, of community and of our common history.

Book excerpt: A renowned, respected teacher and mentor to thousands, Sobonfu Somi is one of the first and foremost voices of African spirituality to come to the West. Somi was born in Dano, Burkina Faso, a remote West African village with a population of about two hundred people. Dano has preserved the old ways of African village life, with family structures, spiritual practices, and methods of living that have been in place for more than ten thousand years. In The Spirit of Intimacy, Somi distills the ancient teachings and wisdom of her native village to give insight into the nature of intimate relationships. Somi generously applies the subtle knowledge from her West African culture to this one. Simply and beautifully, she reveals the role of spirit in every marriage, friendship, relationship, and community. She shares ancient ways to make our intimate lives more fulfilling and secure and offers powerful insights into the "illusion of romance," divorce, and loss. Her important and fascinating lessons from the heart include the sacred meaning of pleasure, preparing a ritual space for intimacy, and the connection between sex and spirituality. Her ideas are intuitively persuasive, provocative, and healing--and supported by sound practical advice, along with specific rituals and ceremonies based on those used for thousands of years. With this book, the spiritual insights of indigenous Africa take their place alongside those of native America, ancient Europe, and Asia as important influences on Western readers.A renowned, respected teacher and mentor to thousands, Sobonfu Somi is one of the first and foremost voices of African spirituality to come to the West. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first volume in a series written from an Afrocentric perspective, especially for use in forming young visionary leaders for the emerging postmodern Global Civilization. It invites young leaders and all people to study humanity's African roots and the ancient and healing wisdom of African traditions. Within the contemporary intellectual-spiritual renaissance of African roots, the book highlights the creation-oriented spirituality of Africa, so full of joy and praise. It summarizes the scientific story of our human family's birth in ancient Africa, and our human family's subsequent migratory journey across the entire planet. It points out the African roots of civilization, of spirituality, and of the roles of women and men, all of which may still be partially reflected across today's human cultures. The book argues that we humans form a single human family guided by common philosophical-ethical truths seminally present in ancient African wisdom. It argues that these truths are grounded in the nature and purpose of everything in the created world, including humanity. We humans are not separated into radically different races. Nor are we separated from the rest of Nature. Rather, we form one human family within the natural world and we seek a common Global Ethics for ourselves and for the natural world of which we are an organic part. The book invites young leaders and all people to work together in healing the great spiritual, ecological, and social breakdowns that have developed from following the false philosophical wisdom of the mechanical-utilitarian cosmology at the foundation of modern Western industrial-colonial civilization. This misguided cosmology constitutes the deep intellectual root of late modern Western culture's promotion of selfish individualism, ecological destruction, and spiritual emptiness. Drawing on African wisdom, the book seeks to help young leaders, and others, to develop a healing global vision for ecological, social, and spiritual regeneration. The book may be used for college and high-school classes, for adult study groups, or for individual study. JOE HOLLAND, the author, is Professor of Philosophy at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida, in the United States. He also serves as President of the Pacem in Terris Global Leadership Initiative. He holds a Ph.D. in the field of Social Ethics from the University of Chicago and has published twelve other books.

THE KEMETIC DIET: GUIDE TO HEALTH, DIET AND FASTING Health issues have always been important to human beings since the beginning of time. The earliest records of history show that the art of healing was held in high esteem since the time of Ancient Egypt. In the early 20th century, medical doctors had almost attained the status of sainthood by the promotion of the idea that they alone were "scientists" while other healing modalities and traditional healers who did not follow the "scientific method' were nothing but superstitious, ignorant charlatans who at best would take the money of their clients and at worst kill them with the unscientific "snake oils" and "irrational theories". In the late 20th century, the failure of the modern medical establishment's ability to lead the general public to good health, promoted the move by many in society towards "alternative medicine". Alternative medicine disciplines are those healing modalities which do not adhere to the philosophy of allopathic medicine. Allopathic medicine is what medical doctors practice by an large. It is the theory that disease is caused by agencies outside the body such as bacteria, viruses or physical means which affect the body. These can therefore be treated by medicines and therapies The natural healing method began in the absence of extensive technologies with the idea that all the answers for health may be found in nature or rather, the deviation from nature. Therefore, the health of the body can be restored by correcting the aberration and thereby restoring balance. This is the area that will be covered in this volume. Allopathic techniques have their place in the art of healing. However, we should not forget that the body is a grand achievement of the spirit and built into it is the capacity to maintain itself and heal itself.

Book excerpt: African Tradition is built on the innate"What it is" of oneself and life living that "Underlie" "how things appear" and "what things do." "Underlying" contents consist of Nature's infinite Foundation of Unified Complexity and multiplicity Patterns. These rest on the Ultimate of all Cosmic Orders-- the Spiritual Elements of Unconditional Love, Truth, Reality and the Natural--all Orderly orchestrated by the boundless Force, which Ancient Africans called Sekhem. This book deals with the Instincts, Common Sense, Creativity, Reasoning, Knowledge, Logic and Wisdom faculties naturally developing from ones inborn Pure Emotions and Pure Intellect. Their presented patterns are from my interpretations of African Tradition methods. Yet, vital to Thought Harmony inside creative explorations of the infinite "Underlyings" is Critical Thinking --serving like a protective, defending and guiding "seeing eye dog." These processes express ones innate Selfhood Greatness--derived from possessing a Spark of God + the supreme Ancient African "Genetics" + a "Unique" Talent to be a bridge to ones Mission in life. Proper use of these thinking faculties, while staying within Nature's Processes, make one a "Non-Self" individual--meaning "because we are, therefore I am"--and thus oriented to producing "ME/WE" benefits. Also addressed are the Healing for and Protective Measures against the European mindsets and methods used to generate massive Maafas (immeasurable catastrophes) on Black People.

Book excerpt: African Proverbs for All Ages is a beautifully-illustrated, engaging picture book about the power of proverbs, how they evolve over time, and the wisdom of various cultures in Africa. It has been said that a proverb is a short sentence based on long experience. Whether you are young or old, proverbs can open your mind to a whole new way of seeing the world. We underestimate children when we assume they are incapable of understanding metaphor and deeper meaning. There are multiple ways that children learn, but for each method by which they learn, they need their imagination engaged and their visual sensibilities ignited. And as adults, we underestimate ourselves when we allow our lives to be about practical matters only. Proverbs can stir our soul and spark our imagination. --Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Ph.D. President Emerita of Spelman and Bennett Colleges In African Proverbs for All Ages, noted anthropologist and educator Dr. Johnetta Betsch Cole and award-winning illustrator Nelda LaTeef invite children and adults to explore and reflect on complex notions about relationships, identity, society, and the human condition.
