Book excerpt: Tax havens in offshore lands like Switzerland, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas were once considered a rarity, the preserve of the super-rich. Today, they are big business available to the masses. Their goal? To avoid any form of accountability. Own nothing. Possess everything. Be answerable to no one. Where are these tax havens? What forms can they take? What future lies in store for them, and why should we care? An Anatomy of Tax Havens: Europe, the Caribbean and the United States of America answers these questions, and more, in the first comparative study in one volume of European, Caribbean and United States tax havens. It examines their simple origin to the extreme forms some take today, delving into the murky subculture that has deliberately made them impenetrably obscure. Uniquely, it combines detailed technical expertise (regulatory regimes, financial crime, legal and equitable structuring) with an analysis of their impact on domestic and global political, economic, environmental and social concerns. An Anatomy of Tax Havens is a fascinating, informative read for a broad readership; from legal, accountancy and tax practitioners to compliance regulators, law enforcement agencies, and students and researchers interested in business studies, taxation, and crime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling ride inside the world of tax havens and corporate masterminds While the United States experiences recession and economic stagnation and European countries face bankruptcy, experts struggle to make sense of the crisis. Nicholas Shaxson, a former correspondent for the Financial Times and The Economist, argues that tax havens are a central cause of all these disasters. In this hard hitting investigation he uncovers how offshore tax evasion, which has cost the U.S. 100 billion dollars in lost revenue each year, is just one item on a long rap sheet outlining the damage that offshoring wreaks on our societies. In a riveting journey from Moscow to London to Switzerland to Delaware, Shaxson dives deep into a vast and secret playground where bankers and multinational corporations operate side by side with nefarious tax evaders, organized criminals and the world's wealthiest citizens. Tax havens are where all these players get to maximize their own rewards and leave the middle class to pick up the bill. With eye opening revelations, Treasure Islands exposes the culprits and its victims, and shows how: *Over half of world trade is routed through tax havens *The rampant practices that precipitated the latest financial crisis can be traced back to Wall Street's offshoring practices *For every dollar of aid we send to developing countries, ten dollars leave again by the backdoor The offshore system sits much closer to home than the pristine tropical islands of the popular imagination. In fact, it all starts on a tiny island called Manhattan. In this fast paced narrative, Treasure Islands at last explains how the system works and how it's contributing to our ever deepening economic divide.

Book Synopsis Treasure Islands by : Nicholas Shaxson
Download or read book Treasure Islands written by Nicholas Shaxson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dirty money, tax havens and the offshore system describe the ugliest and most secretive chapter in the history of global economic affairs. Tax havens have declared war on honest, law-abiding people around the world. Wealthy individuals hold over ten trillion dollars offshore. Tax havens are the most important single reason why poor people and poor countries stay poor. Britain and the United States are the world's two most important tax havens. Tax havens now lie at the very heart of the global economy. Over half of world trade, and most international lending, is processed through them. Tax havens have been instrumental in nearly every major economic event, in every big financial scandal, and in every financial crisis since the 1970s, including the latest global economic crisis. "Treasure Islands" show how this happens and reveal what the economics text books will not tell you."
Book Synopsis Tax Evasion and Tax Havens since the Nineteenth Century by : Sébastien Guex
Download or read book Tax Evasion and Tax Havens since the Nineteenth Century written by Sébastien Guex and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective book offers a panorama of the history of tax evasion, tax avoidance and tax havens from the nineteenth century to the present day, based on the latest research in contemporary history. It aims to show that this phenomenon is at the heart of global capitalism, partly as a response of the ruling classes to the rise of progressive taxation, but for other reasons too: notably the development of a powerful tax evasion and avoidance industry in different countries. The book argues that tax competition between states has stimulated the development of tax havens. It discusses the notion of the ‘tax haven’ and proposes a more rigorous concept - that of the ‘tax predator’. Finally, the book sheds light on the socio-political conflicts that have developed around tax evasion and the way in which states have fought against or tolerated the phenomenon.

This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tax Havens and Their Use by United States Taxpayers: An Overview; A Report to the Commissioner of Internal Revenue, the Assistant Attorney General (Tax Division) And the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (Tax Policy) This study was undertaken at the request of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue, the Assistant Attorney General (tax Division), and the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (tax Policy). The purpose of the study was to develop an overview of tax havens and the use of tax havens by United States taxpayers. The study sought to determine the frequency and nature of tax haven transactions, identify specific types of tax haven transactions, obtain a description of the united States and foreign legal and regulatory environment in which tax haven transactions are conducted, describe Internal Revenue Service and Justice Department efforts to deal with tax haven related transactions, and to identify interagency coordination problems. Our findings are based on a review of judicial decisions and published literature in the field of international tax planning, research into internal irs documents concerning taxpayer activities, interviews with irs personnel, personnel who deal with tax haven issues for other Federal government agencies, and lawyers and certified public accountants who specialize in international taxation. Our findings are also based on a statistical analysis of available data concerning international banking, United States direct investment abroad, and foreign investment in the United States. While we cannot claim that we uncovered all of the methods employed to use tax havens, we believe that our inquiry was extensive enough to give us an understanding of the situation and to enable us to develop options which might be useful in improving the administration of the tax laws as they apply to tax havens.
