Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now you Merely Acknowledge calendric resonances, the anniversary view of histmy, and catalogue them by Alphabetical Priority. -John Barth, Letters The history of medicine is a microcosm for the whole of human history. Its advances parallel progress in science and philosophy, civilization and ethics. Its pageantry mirrors all the triumphs and follies of human history. Osler commented that "the really notable years in the annals of medicine are not very numerous. "l And indeed most calendars and alma nacs record but few medical milestones. The present collection has been made over a period of years. Its method is that of a commonplace book: "What have we to do but to set down this holy man's name in the calen dar of saints?"2 The persons herein represented include pre dominantly physicians, anatomists, and barber surgeons, with some few pharmacist-apothecaries and alchemists, an occa sional chemist, biochemist, or physiologist, an infrequent nurse, and a rare medical school botany professor of materia medica. The milestones cover the dates of great discoveries, first (and often contested) operations, publications, and pres entations. The feast days of holy patrons of those suffering various diseases are recalled, along with the dates of birth (and sometimes baptism), of medical graduation, and of the deaths of famous physicians. (It will be remembered that, with the exception of the feast of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, saints are celebrated on the dates of their death-their birth into eternal life.

Book excerpt: This essay places Holmes and Watson among the greatest creations of the Western literary imagination and explores the archetypes that have contributed to Holme's universal appeal. Holme's intuitive methods are shown to be based on a misinterpretation of medical diagnostics. The appendix provides the first quantitative stylistic analysis of the Holmes canon.

Book excerpt: A Novel of the American Civil War David Preston was an officer in the U. S. Army—before Virginia seceded from the Union. Then, with most of his fellow Virginians, he offered himself in the service of the Confederacy . . . Assigned to Col. T. J. Jackson's 1st brigade, at Harper's Ferry, he quickly began applying the expertise in military medicine he had gained as an observer with Garibaldi's forces in Italy. He'd met Abe Lincoln once, in Washington. Now he was to encounter the likes of J. E. B. Stuart, the dashing cavalry commander, Robert E. Lee, Jubal Early, and especially Stonewall Jackson—that puzzling blend of professor, Bible scholar, and dazzling military genius. David was to follow Jackson through all his campaigns—right up to the last one, at Chancellorsville, where a stray bullet ended the great general's life. And David was then to see the Confederate cause gallantly go down to defeat as Grant's armies closed their iron circle around Richmond. But always in the back of David's mind was Araminta, the Cherokee woman he would marry if he survived the war. She was caught up in the political intrigues over the fate of the Cherokee nation after the war, and her Southern sympathies led her to take chances which endangered her safety, and perhaps her life . . . Human tragedies interweave and blend with the broad sweep of military maneuvers, in this large-scale historical novel about the men who fought with Stonewall Jackson during the Great War of Secession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1959, this is the autobiography of one of the greatest authorities ever on forensic medicine, who was a contemporary and, from time to time, a courtroom opponent of Sir Bernard Spilsbury. The author describes his early days in New Zealand, his days in Edinburgh and his First World War experiences in Egypt. In 1928 he returned to Edinburgh as Professor of Forensic Medicine and, from his unique knowledge and experience, wrote brilliant chapters in the annals of the British courts until his retirement in 1953. A gripping account of baffling murders solved in the laboratories by the greatest pathologist of our time. “The autobiography of a British expert in forensic medicine and ballistics and medico-legal testimony is a thoroughly absorbing book for those whose special interest is in true crime material [...] There’s humanity, humor and charm in the telling and followers of criminology should be pleased with this addition.”—Kirkus Review

Book Synopsis Thomas Lodge - Scillaes Metamorphosis by : Thomas Lodge
Download or read book Thomas Lodge - Scillaes Metamorphosis written by Thomas Lodge and published by Portable Poetry. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As can be easily understood presenting an exact chronicle of the facts in the life of a 16th Century playwright is often difficult. Thomas Lodge is no exception. Thomas Lodge, born around 1558 in west Ham, was the second son of Sir Thomas Lodge, the Lord Mayor of London, and his third wife Anne. Lodge was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and thence to Trinity College, Oxford; taking his BA in 1577 and his MA in 1581. Lodge, disregarded his parents career wishes in order to take up literature. When the penitent Stephen Gosson published his Schoole of Abuse in 1579, Lodge responded with Defence of Poetry, Music and Stage Plays (1579 or 1580). His pamphlet was banned, but appears to have been circulated privately. Already in 1580 Lodge had published a volume of poems entitled Scillaes Metamorphosis, Enterlaced with the Unfortunate Love of Glaucus, also more briefly known as Glaucus and Scilla. Lodge seems to have married his first wife Joan in or shortly before 1583, when, "impressed with the uncertainty of human life," he made a will. The marriage of Lodge and Joan produced a daughter, Mary. The debate in pamphlets between Lodge and Gosson continued with Gosson's Playes Confuted in Five Actions; and Lodge retorting with his Alarum Against Usurers (1585)-a "tract for the times." Lodge appears to have been at sea on a number of long voyages. Many nations endorsed these tactics and it seems fairly safe to suggest that these voyages were a source of revenue which would keep Joan and Mary with their heads above water. During the expedition to Terceira and the Canaries (around 1586), to set aside the tedium of his voyage, Lodge composed his prose tale of Rosalynde, Euphues Golden Legacie, which, printed in 1590, would later be used by Shakespeare as the basis for As You Like It. Before starting on his next voyage, this time to South America, Lodge published a historical romance, The History of Robert, Second Duke of Normandy, surnamed Robert the Devil; and he left behind him for publication Catharos Diogenes in his Singularity, a discourse on the immorality of Athens (London). Both appeared in 1591. It is thought that in 1590, together with Greene, he wrote A Looking Glass for London and England (published 1594). He had already written The Wounds of Civil War (produced perhaps as early as 1587, and published in 1594, and put on as a play reading at the Globe Theatre on 7 February 1606), a good second-rate piece in the half-chronicle fashion of its age. The composition of Phillis, a volume and an early sonnet cycle sequence (an increasingly popular format in Elizabethan times), was published with the narrative poem, The Complaynte of Elsired, in 1593. A Fig for Momus was published in 1595 and gained him the accolade of being the earliest English satiristIn the latter part of his life-possibly about 1596, when he published his Wits Miserie and the World's Madnesse, which is dated from Low Leyton in Essex, and the religious tract Prosopopeia (if, as seems probable, it was his), in which he repents of his "lewd lines" of other days-he became a Catholic and engaged in the practice of medicine, for which Wood says he qualified himself by a degree at Avignon, in France, in 1600. Two years later he received the degree of M.D. from Oxford University. Over the years he was increasingly recognized as a distinguished physician and finally worked from Old Fish Street in the parish of St. Mary Magdalen. Thomas Lodge died in London, most probably during an outbreak of the plague, in 1625.
