Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify intramural training programs for basketball officials and their perceived effectiveness. The population of the study was the 616 intramural directors at four year universities or colleges only who had e-mail addresses listed in the 2005 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association directory. Of the 616, 486 were useable e-mail addresses. Ninety two responded for a return rate of 20.2%. There was no significance found between percentage of time spent on trouble situations and perceived effectiveness of the training program. There was no significance found when floor positioning was taught in the classroom or on the court and effectiveness of training. Additional correlations were done using the Pearson Product Correlation which found a significant relationship between effectiveness of training and hours spent on court scrimmage practices before the season began. There was also a significance found between time spent on additional formal training, although negative.

Book excerpt: The Church has historically played a significant role in the development and preservation of African American families. Despite the tremendous difficulties experienced by African Americans as a result of slavery and the racism that has heretofore plagued American society, the church and family remain, by virtually all accounts, the two most enduring institutions in African American life. The Black Church and family have been seen as a union that is indelibly connected, with the life of either inextricably linked to the strength of the other. As in the past, the future vitality and preservation of African American family life will depend largely upon how churches wholistically address the needs that exist within the family context. African American family preservation involves the appropriation of those spiritual and temporal resources, including values, traditions, methods, processes, systems, philosophies and theologies which will result in the ongoing sustainment, vitality and valuation of family structures and communities. This book offers a framework for the church's engagement in the task of African American family preservation. The primary objective is to develop a model that can be used by churches to support the critical needs of African American families. The overall concern involves discovering ways in which we might better understand the contemporary African American church in relationship to the families which comprise it, and the community in which it resides. The objective here is to ascertain -- beyond any particular denominational distinctive or theological strand -- the effects of these and other theologies upon the Black church and family life.

Book excerpt: The occurrence of flow in a number of leisure and sport activities has been well documented, yet the question of whether sports officials experience flow has not been addressed in the literature. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the occurrence and nature of flow among sport officials, specifically intramural officials. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six University of Tennessee, Knoxville intramural officials. The interviews were transcribed by an independent transcriptionist; the data were reviewed, coded and analyzed using QDA Miner software. Subsequently, five themes emerged: (1) experience/expertise of crewmates and self; (2) motivation of crewmates and self; (3) pace of contest, (4) factors external to and within the contest; and (5) optimal experience. Significant findings of the study included: (1) more experienced officials are better able to handle game situations and serve as inspiring crewmates; (2) motivated individuals adhere to officiating mechanics, hustle, and show enthusiasm; (3) faster paced games can fluster less experienced officials, while veteran intramural officials handle game pace effectively; and (4) health and fitness, weather, personal troubles, and supervisors are factors external to the contest while fans, player behavior, and individual/crew performance are factors within the contest. In summary, the previously noted findings may have an influence on flow experiences for officials and aid in the management of intramural officiating crews.
