Book excerpt: The hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, is an important commercial, recreational and ecological inhabitant of coastal bays along the east and gulf coasts of the United States. This title represents the first state of the art summary of existing knowledge of the hard clam by experts in various disciplines. Containing a compendium of literature on the hard clam, comprehensive chapters on various aspects of its biology as well as summaries of knowledge including the gray literature on this economically important species, this volume represents a comprehensive source of biological information for managers and researchers interested in shallow marine and estuarine ecosystems. Research students and managers charged with maintaining coastal ecosystems will also find a wealth of background material. The first synthesis of available information on the mercenaria mercenaria, this title is a response to the needs of individuals involved in hard clam aquaculture and scientists interested in molluscan biology, coastal ocean ecology and similar fields. Over 2300 documents have been synthesized, and chapter authors have added unpublished information as well as new material.

They support commercial, sport and subsistence fisheries although unfortunately, with few exceptions, the harvest of these invertebrates is declining. This decline is probably caused by a number of factors including pollution and overfishing. In an effort to ameliorate this situation, interest in the aquaculture of these species has grown.Intensive semi-controlled clam culture has been attempted in North America for almost three decades. However, it was not until the last decade that a number of entrepreneurs actually began clam farming and developing successful and profitable operations. This success has been possible because of numerous scientific and practical contributions made by a great number of scientists, growers, and clammers over the years, and by a healthy market demand caused by a downward trend in the wild harvest. Many of the

Book excerpt: Virginia leads the nation in production of aquacultured hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria (Linnaeus, 1758), with an estimated farm gate value of $38.8 million in 2018. Despite the high economic value, there are few genomic resources available to support the hard clam aquaculture industry. To develop effective genetic tools for industry, it is important to first understand population structure. Hard clams have a pelagic larval phase that allows for dispersal, but the level of genetic connectivity among populations is not well understood. This study used genotyping-by-sequencing to delineate the genetic stock structure of wild clams sampled along the East Coast of North America and identify a subset of informative loci for population discrimination. Samples were collected from 15 locations from Prince Edward Island, Canada, to South Carolina, USA. Following DNA isolation, 452 individuals were sequenced and 153,842 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. The SNP loci were filtered for quality control, resulting in a final dataset of 4,960 SNPs from 448 individuals that was analyzed to delineate population structure and quantify levels of genetic divergence among populations and levels of diversity within populations. Data provided evidence of five genetic breaks separating six genetically distinct populations; Canada, Maine, Massachusetts, Mid-Atlantic, Chesapeake Bay and the Carolinas. The use of next-generation sequencing markers in this study enabled identification of finer scale population structure than was previously recognized. Data were used to identify a subset of SNP markers capable of geographic discrimination and population assignment with 75–93% accuracy. This is the first study to assess population genetic structure of the economically important hard clam along a large portion of their native range with high resolution genomic markers.

Book excerpt: A survey was made during the summer of 1958 to assess the abundance of hard clams, Venus (Mercenaria) mercenaria, in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts. A jet (hydraulic) dredge was used as the principal sampling gear. Data from 214 sample stations compared with other Atlantic coast areas indicated that the abundance of hard clams in Nantucket Sound was extremely low. The survey revealed no new general areas of commercial abundance. No clams less than 60 millimeters (2 3/8 inches) were caught. Because of hydrographic conditions unfavorable for spawning and setting and because there are few small clams to augment the present stocks, the future of this fishery is uncertain.

Book excerpt: Mollusks have been important to humans since our earliest days. Initially, when humans were primarily interested in what they could eat or use, mollusks were important as food, ornaments, and materials for tools. Over the centuries, as human knowledge branched out and individuals started to study the world around them, mollusks were important subjects for learning how things worked. In this volume, the editors and contributors have brought together a broad range of topics within the field of malacology. It is our expectation that these topics will be of interest and use to amateur and professional malacologists.
