Book Synopsis Dominican Sugar Plantations by : Martin Murphy
Download or read book Dominican Sugar Plantations written by Martin Murphy and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-08-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the organization of production and labor use in the Caribbean's second largest sugar industry, this work depicts the reality of the Dominican sugar economy of the 1980s. It describes the progressive replacement of national labor by foreign workers. Comparing the three distinct sugar corporations, it concludes that all three exploited foreign labor. Refuting modern slavery charges through social science theory and extensive field research, this study suggests these charges resulted from superficial analyses of symbols. In depth analyses display one of the 20th century's most extensive forms of super exploitation.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, SIld disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna and broader dissemination. tional publishing house to assure improved service Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 30 (thesis year 1985) a total of 12,400 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 186 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work.
Book Synopsis The Modern Plantation in the Third World by : Edgar Graham
Download or read book The Modern Plantation in the Third World written by Edgar Graham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, this was the first study to define and rationalise the character and functions of the plantation in the contemporary world. The author, Edgar Graham, was uniquely placed to do this having had long experience of Unilever’s plantations in West Africa, Zaire, Malaysia and the Pacific. Writing as a pragmatist, from observed fact, his starting point was the fact that the ‘modern plantation’ bears very little resemblance to that of the past, on which most hostile accounts are still based. Two changes altered the very nature of the issue: First, the 20th Century plantation existed within an economic framework controlled by independent governments. Secondly, the rapid development in technology has revolutionised most aspects of plantation production. The result, it is argued, is that the modern plantation offers host governments the option of using this as the most efficient way of utilising available factors of production to provide a maximum social return. Exemplified by case studies, this study presents a powerful argument for the continue use of the plantation system when properly applied to a variety of tropical crops.
