Book excerpt: This thesis explores occupational strategy and abandonment behaviour at Zahrat adh-Dhra' (ZAD 1), a Middle Bronze II (2000-1500 BCE) site located on the Dead Sea Plain in Jordan. ZAD 1 was distinct from other contemporaneous sites because of its architecture, village plan, ceramic assemblage composition and discard behaviour. The inhabitants of ZAD 1 were not integrated into the larger Middle Bronze II (MB II) world to the north, and did not participate in the vital and lucrative trade of copper. The settlement survived in a marginal environment marked by low annual precipitation and high temperatures. A major tectonic episode was responsible for the truncation of the site and its subsequent abandonment. The excavation of nine architectural units provided evidence for the location of use and discard of household ceramic assemblages. The architecture was characterised by a dispersed plan of rectilinear pit-houses situated over 12 hectares.

Book excerpt: This study presents the results of an analysis of three Late Neolithic pottery assemblages from Wadi Ziqlab, northern Jordan. These sites were occupied during the 6th millennium BC (calibrated) and are therefore contemporary with sites in other parts of the southern Levant that are attributed to the Wadi Rabah culture. The assemblages are analyzed from a stylistic perspective, broadly defined, which includes an examination of technological style in addition to a more traditional examination of vessel form and surface treatment. Different stages in the pottery production sequence are investigated using a range of analytical techniques, including thin-section petrography and xeroradiography. While there are some similarities between the assemblages, there are also some noticeable differences.The results of the pottery analysis are used to explore the nature of community in the context of the Late Neolithic. A critique of more traditional archaeological approaches to prehistoric communities leads to a re-conceptualization of community that combines interactional and ideational perspectives. Similarities in pottery among the sites, especially technological similarities, suggest that pottery producers may have comprised a dispersed community of practice. At the same time, pottery may have also been a symbolic marker of community boundaries. Differences in pottery among the sites, including surface treatment, may reflect the flexibility of these boundaries as different parts of the dispersed community negotiated their place in it.The presence of variation among contemporary pottery assemblages in a localized area suggests that social organization during the 6th millennium may have been more complex than is normally assumed for the Late Neolithic in the southern Levant. A dispersed community, with its members spread throughout the wadi, would require a sufficiently complex and flexible system of relationships to maintain it. Failing to acknowledge this has contributed to the difficulties archaeologists have encountered when trying to understand the culture-history of the 6th millennium BC in and east of the Jordan Valley.

The volume is divided into four main parts: Part I provides the reader with a typology of the relevant Egyptian forms. Part III is a site by site presentation of the Egyptian assemblages to offer a broad canvas of the phenomenon under review (mainly Beth-Shean, Megiddo, Tell es-Sa'idiyeh, Tel Dor, Tel Aphek, Tel Mor, Ashkelon, Tell el-'Ajjul, Deir el-Balah, Lachish, Tel Sera' and Tell el-Far'ah [South]). Part IV presents a concluding discussion. Among other issues it collates a combined chronological framework, an analysis of the repertoire and function of the Egyptian assemblages and a reflection on the role of (locally-made) Egyptian-style pottery as ethnic marker. The volume closes with 68 plates, showing drawings of the vessels discussed throughout the study. A number of authors contributed chapters on various issues. This is the first time that a full, complex picture is presented on the reviewed topic. The two cardinal issues concern (1) the nature of the Egyptian involvement in Late Bronze Age Canaan in general and in Ramesside Canaan in particular (keywords: ethnicity, direct rule versus elite emulation), on which the Egyptian-type pottery sheds light; (2) the chronological value of the reviewed ceramic shapes, many of which function as sensible chronological markers and, in combination with Aegean and Cypriot imports, allow for a refined chronological framework, including revisions of traditional dating.

The aim of this book is to provide a cutting-edge theoretical and methodological framework, as well as a practical guide, for archaeologists, students and researchers to study ceramic assemblages. As opposed to the conventional typological approach, which focuses on vessel shape and assumed function with the main goal of establishing a chronological sequence, the proposed framework is based on the technological approach. Such an approach utilizes the concept of chaîne opératoire, which is geared to an anthropological interpretation of archaeological objects. The author offers a sound theoretical background accompanied by an original research strategy whose presentation is at the heart of this book. This research strategy is presented in successive chapters that are geared to explain not only how to study archaeological assemblages, but also why the proposed methods are essential for achieving ambitious interpretive goals. In the heated debate on the equation stating that “pots equal people”, which is a rather fuzzy reference to assumed relationships between (mostly) ethnic groups and pottery, technology enables us to propose with conviction the equation “pots equal potters”. In this way, a well-founded history of potters is able to achieve a much better cultural and anthropological understanding of ancient societies.

Book excerpt: Among desert farmers of the prehistoric Southwest, irrigation played a crucial role in the development of social complexity. This innovative study examines the changing relationship between irrigation and community organization among the Hohokam and shows through ceramic data how that dynamic relationship influenced sociopolitical development. David Abbott contends that reconstructions of Hohokam social patterns based solely on settlement pattern data provide limited insight into prehistoric social relationships. By analyzing ceramic exchange patterns, he provides complementary information that challenges existing models of sociopolitical organization among the Hohokam of central Arizona. Through ceramic analyses from Classic period sites such as Pueblo Grande, Abbott shows that ceramic production sources and exchange networks can be determined from the composition, surface treatment attributes, and size and shape of clay containers. The distribution networks revealed by these analyses provide evidence for community boundaries and the web of social ties within them. Abbott's meticulous research documents formerly unrecognized horizontal cohesiveness in Hohokam organizational structure and suggests how irrigation was woven into the fabric of their social evolution. By demonstrating the contribution that ceramic research can make toward resolving issues about community organization, this work expands the breadth and depth of pottery studies in the American Southwest.

The LRP has focused widely on stratigraphic, environmental, and ethnographic problems related to the history of settlement at Tell Halif and in its immediate surroundings, from prehistoric through modern times. It is fitting that this LRP series begins by focusing on remains from Site 101, which was the first location excavated by the team in 1973. This initial effort involved investigation of a warren of shallow caves that had been exposed by efforts to widen the road into the kibbutz. In this volume, J. P. Dessel reports on the excavation undertaken at Site 101 during Phase II and is also supplemented by his later research. The excavation itself was guided throughout by Dessel’s determination to require the total retrieval of all ceramic remains. It was his rigorous follow-through on all details involved in the analysis of materials that produced the pioneering results herein presented. Book excerpt: The Early Bronze Age (3500 BCE--2000 BCE) signals the start of complex societies across the Middle East. Compared to Egypt and Mesopotamia, sites in the southern Levant developed on a smaller scale. The difference in scale has led to debate about whether it is appropriate to call the settlements of the Early Bronze Age "urban" or "complex" by focusing on ranking, social differentiation, and unequal access to resources to indicate the development of elite structures. This study examines the site of Khirbat Hamra Ifdan (KHI) in the Faynan district of southern Jordan to assess the role of the production of copper on both local and regional social structures. As a significant prestige good, copper could act as a tool of ancient elites to finance and maintain their position of power. Any site involved in the production of that good becomes an excellent candidate to examine the role of elites in production and unequal access to material wealth. However, the Faynan district is an arid region where dry farming is impossible, making the support of an urban elite difficult. In order to place production at KHI within the dialogue of urbanism in the Levantine EBA, it is necessary to highlight characteristics locally and regionally that indicate aspects of a production and exchange system that suggest ranking, social differentiation, and unequal access to resources. A hybrid approach is used to examine the social structure of KHI and the neighboring region. The ceramic assemblage, comprising over 6.5 tons of sherds is examined in detail according to types and functional equivalents to highlight whether there is evidence of division of activity within the site and tested. To do this a new web application and data infrastructure called ArchaeoSTOR was created. Next, a map of the diachronic changes in the constellation of copper producing and trading sites is developed using paleomagnetic and radiometric dating techniques to indicate contemporaneity along with ceramic correlates. Finally, local and regional data is used to describe a new model for the development and dissolution of specialized copper production during the EBA.

By gathering in Atlanta, and by participating in this volume, the contributors honor the careers and scholarly passions of Walt and Tom, whose work in southern Levantine archaeology began in the 1960s when they were young scholars working with Paul Lapp. The breadth and depth of experience of the contributors’ disciplinary and theoretical interests reflects the shared influence of and esteem for Walt’s and Tom’s own scholarly gifts as archaeologists, mentors, collaborators, and intellectual innovators. The primary disciplinary “homes” for the scholars contributing to this volume encompass a broad range of methods and approaches to learning about the past: anthropological archaeology, Near Eastern archaeology, biblical archaeology, and physical anthropology. Their institutional “homes” include universities and institutes in Canada, Denmark, Israel, Jordan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States; their theoretical “homes” include the broadly-conceived archaeological frameworks of culture-history, processualism, and post-processualism. Collectively, these papers reflect the enormous breadth of influence that Tom’s and Walt’s scholarly contributions have made to EB studies.
