Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the contributions student organization advisors make towards successful student organizations. The current research on student organization advising mainly consists of guidebooks or articles on specific types of student organization advising. Any current resources that are available are mainly grounded in anecdotal experiences, providing advisors with little guidance supported with empirical evidence.This study used a multi-case study research design focused on student organization advisors and student leaders from organizations recognized by a large, public, four-year, primarily residential, high research activity university. The advisors were chosen from a purposive sample of advisors who attended advisor workshops provided by the student affairs division. Highly structured interviews, observations, and document analysis were used for data collection. The results of this research confirmed findings from the current student organization advising literature that there are a variety of advisor approaches and roles and the fact that the student-advisor relationship can directly impact individual student development. This study also deepened the understanding of student organization advising. The findings show the various ways advisors impact individual student leaders through developing open-relationships and knowledge, skills and life strategies. The research also exhibited how advisors impact organizations through the various roles they fulfill. Finally, the study demonstrated that the act of advising a student organization impacts the advisor, as well. Advisors were impacted in that they found themselves setting and navigating personal and professional boundaries and determining when and when not to intervene. These results can be used to better inform and prepare advisors to help an organizations continued success.

Book excerpt: Faculty serve in a variety of capacities within the university. One of the roles commonly held by faculty members is to engage with students through advising. Likewise, since the founding of the higher education system in the United States, student organizations play an integral part in the student experience on college campuses. Although faculty play an integral role with student organizations, and student organizations comprise an important part of the higher education landscape, no advising theories surrounding student organization advising currently exist. Borrowing from academic advising literature and associated theories as a guide, two types of advising, prescriptive and developmental, may provide an initial starting point for better understanding student organization advising practices. Developmental advising first appeared in 1972 by Crookston and was later elaborated on by O'Banion (1972). In 1982, Winston and Sandor developed an instrument to measure academic advising titled the Academic Advising Inventory (AAI), which determined, on a scale, whether the advisor's approach to advising presented as more prescriptive or developmental. This study used a modified Academic Advising Inventory, the Student Organization Advising Inventory, a 55-question survey including 14 demographic-type questions that provided insight into advising preference, common advising activities, and relationships between the style of advising and the advisors' demographics. The inventory was sent via Qualtrics email to 279 faculty advisors to student organizations at a large public university. Of those who received the survey, 74 (26.5%) advisors completed it. The study found that the participants preferred developmental advising techniques and that the most reported activities reported were discussing organization business such as meeting/programming topics, getting to know each other, signing forms, identifying other campus offices that can provide assistance, discussing extracurricular activities, discussing college policies, discussing officer succession, talking about what you are doing besides taking classes, and discussing bylaws or constitution requirements. The comparison between the advising style and each of the three demographic indicators did not yield a statistically significant relationship. There was no evidence of a relationship between the preferred advising style and sex, time at institution, or type of organization advised. Implications for practice include training, recruitment, and advising approach.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand how student government advisors and members of campus communities where they work, understand and conceptualize their critical duties and responsibilities, and reconceptualize this role as one critical in supporting campus advocacy and activism giving changes within the higher education landscape. Through the application of a 360-degree analysis approach, this study focused on the experiences of advisors serving in full-time, part-time, or voluntary capacities to student government organizations at three institutions in the Midwest. This study also introduces transformative advising as a viable model to be implemented by student government advisors and potentially others who support student organizations involved in advocacy and activism on campus. Data collection procedures in this study included qualitative interviewing and document analysis procedures. Student government organizational constitutions, operating procedures (rule and protocols for day-to-day operation), and handbooks were collected and analyzed from each of the three institutions. The data analysis process took a pragmatic thematic analysis approach that collected data from transcribed conversations using quotes and common ideas, identified data patterns, and combined patterns into themes. Completing and analyzing data collected from the semi-structured qualitative interviews illuminated the challenging nature of serving as the student government advisor by participants situated throughout each organization. Interpretation of the findings through the lens of challenges translated into role marginalization, tension, and power. Determining ways to support student activism on college and university campuses is a pressing matter and both supporting and challenging individuals that sit at the front lines of this work--the student government advisor-- is critical. However, as illuminated by the findings, there is little focus on the role of the advisor and ensuring there are structural supports from the institution to carry out their work in inclusive, transformative, and productive ways that benefit all members of the campus community.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover, examine, and describe the roles and responsibilities of the sorority and fraternity advisors on the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse campus. The second purpose of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of others who may be interested in advisory positions, and to the present advisors who may, as a result of this study, evaluate themselves and their performance as an advisor. The population was composed of all eleven social sorority and fraternity advisors at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse campus, during the Spring Semester of 1978. To meet the stated purpose, an extensive questionnaire was distributed to the social sorority and fraternity advisors, as a tool to reveal the needed information. The answers to the questionnaire inquiring about the advisors' perceptions as to their own personal roles and responsibilities were analyzed according to the current trends in advising student organizations. The results of the investigation included: 1. The average age of the sorority advisors is a bit younger than that of the fraternity advisors. 2. The typical fraternity advisor has been with the same group twice as long as the typical sorority advisor. 3. Sorority advisors were all appointed by the National organization, whereas all fraternity advisors were asked by a student member and selected by the organization. 4. Generally, the sorority advisors felt that they knew the members of their group better than the fraternity advisors felt they knew the members of their group. 5. All but one sorority advisor felt that she had a great amount of authority over the group, but realized she must be very careful with this power of authority. The greater majority of fraternity advisors were against this idea of having authority over the group and felt they had none, per se. The sorority advisors felt responsible for their groups and felt they have the final say. The fraternity advisors felt that the group has the final responsibility and authority and that he, the advisor, was there only to provide advice and only if the group asked for it. 6. The majority of advisors did not conduct any leadership training and/or development workshops for the group. 7. The majority of advisors did not work very closely with the pledge classes or the pledge trainer. 8. Half of the advisors felt they had the responsibility to cultivate potential leaders in the Chapter, and half felt they no responsibility in this area. 9. The majority of advisors felt that the philosophy of allowing mistakes for learning's sake is quite acceptable. Several added the stipulation that they agreed, but that it depended upon the mistake about to be made, whether they would allow it to happen. On the basis of the data in this study, recommendations made were: 1. That National Organizations provide more training for their Chapter advisors. 2. That the University, specifically the Student Activities Office, conduct some classes, seminars, and/or workshops for student organization advisors. 3. That the National Organization and/or the University advise the individuals of their legal responsibilities as advisors to a student organization, by holding a workshop or seminar on the legal responsibilities of student group advisors. 4. That the University keep the advisors informed and aware of certain policies of the university which the advisor may be expected to interpret to the group. 5. That more research and study be done in the area of student group advising today. 6. That more research be done in the area of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of student group advisors today. It was further recommended that a study be conducted to determine the perceptions of student members and the National Organizations, in regard to the roles and responsibilities of the sorority and fraternity advisors, to be compared and contrasted with the views of the advisors themselves.
