Book excerpt: This study was performed to determine (1) whether performance improves during part-task tank gunnery training on TOPGUN and VIGS devices; (2) whether TOPGUN performance transfers to VIGS performance, and vice versa; (3) whether training performance on VIGS and TOPGUN transfers to gunnery performance an a high-fidelity trainer--the Institutional Conduct-of-Fire Trainer (ICOFT); (4) which sequence of training (TOPGUN-VIGS or VIGS-TOPGUN) shows better transfer to ICOFT; and (5) whether selected aptitude, ability, motivational, and demographic measures predict TOPGUN, VIGS, and ICOFT performance.

Book excerpt: This research examined the effect of TopGun training on main gun M60A3 tank gunnery performance as measured on the Conduct-of-Fire Trainer (COFT) . Three groups of 16 Reserve Component (RC) soldiers were compared using a transfer of training design. Firing under auxiliary sighting conditions, the groups differed on the number of TopGun training sessions (0, 1, or 3) they had before completing a testing session on COFT. Results showed that gunnery speed and accuracy on stationary and moving targets improved during TopGun training and that prior training on TopGun improved subsequent performance on COFT in terms of increased accuracy on stationary target engagements. TopGun performance was also found to be a reliable predictor of COFT performance, with greater correlations found for speed than for accuracy. This report outlines a TopGun- based training strategy for increasing the probability of positive transfer to moving targets, as well as to stationary targets, and for enhancing the overall payoff obtained from TopGun training within the RC.

Book excerpt: The high costs and problems associated with equipment-based training have prompted the use of both high- and low-fidelity devices and simulations for tank gunnery training. The utility of the TOPGUN device as a low-fidelity part- task gunnery trainer is examined in three experiments by comparing soldier pretest to posttest performance, as defined by six measures of gunnery accuracy and speed, and increases in TOPGUN and I-COFT tank gunnery device proficiency. The major findings of the research were (a) experienced and inexperienced soldiers learned basic gunnery skills on TOPGUN; (b) device-based performance improvements were not significantly different using either free-play or structured training for experienced or inexperienced soldiers; (c) gunnery skills by MOS-qualified soldiers improved significantly from pretest, however, group differences were not detected; and (d) the overall attitude of soldiers who trained on the device was very positive. Keywords: Armor, Simulation, TOPGUN, Training devices, Soldier effectiveness, Performance(human).

Book excerpt: The Videodisk Gunnery simulator (VIGS) and the Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer (UCOFT) were used to crosstrain soldiers from an M60A3 armor unit as M1 tank gunners. Estimates of measurement reliability were obtained for each device and the effectiveness of the devices for training gunnery skills was evaluated. Measures of effectiveness included performance improvement on each device as a function of practice on that device and training transfer between the devices. The results showed that gunnery performance could be reliably measured on both the VIGS and UCOFT. Significant improvements in gunnery performance were obtained with both devices, but skills learned did not transfer from one device to the other. Keywords: Armor, Training transfer, Training devices, Training effectiveness, Tank gunnery, Tanks, Simulators, Reliability, Crosstraining. (sdw).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digitization is the future of the Army. However, along with digitization come training and personnel implications. This report discusses training issues associated with digitization, specifically those that address a need to train and maintain backup along with digital skills. Backup skills are the individual and collective skills required when digital systems are degraded or unavailable. The study focused on the digital M1A2 Abrams Main Battle training program as an exemplar. Lessons learned about digital and backup training requirements should be applied in the M2A3 training program. The study investigated issues that are applicable to a wide range of digital applications and training conditions. The study examined individual and collective tasks that support tank operations and found both digital and backup tasks to be poorly defined, particularly in collective performance. A method for analysis is described and analytic results reported. The study also outlines the current state of training armor and infantry soldiers and the impact that increased digitization may have on training pipelines. The study employed a series of expert groups to define issues and formulate recommendations. These groups included users, developers, researchers, and trainers with a wide spectrum of experience and viewpoints. Expert group results are reported and include 15 primary issues and accompanying recommendations.

Book excerpt: Training simulators, developed to ease the burden on resources and to provide low-cost alternatives, must be field tested prior to their use. This report describes the field trials of the Perceptronics MK60, a part-task tank gunnery simulator which through computer control (1) presents target engagements recorded on a videodisc, (2) enables students to operate switches and controls, track and fire, and (3) provides feedback about their performance. The purpose of the field trials was to assess, in an institutional setting (1) the training effectiveness of the MK60 for teaching gunnery skills, (2) the transfer of that training to M60A1 tank performance, (3) the validity of the MK60 for predicting M60A1 performance of individual soldiers, and (4) the opinions of students and instructors. Field trials were conducted with Armor Officer Basic students and with enlisted students in basic Armor Training. Two intensities of simulator training were compared to the normal programs of instruction. Results indicated that (1) performance on the simulator increased as a direct function of practice time, with improvements in speed of achieving target hits and in consistency of gunner verbal respones; (2) transfer of training from the MK60 to dry fire and live fire on the M60A1 tank appeared equal to that of the devices currently used in gunnery training; (3) the MK60 was not predictive of individual soldiers' M60A1 performance; and (4) students and instructors found the simulator challenging, realistic and they were very favorable toward its use. This book was released on 1988 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this report (ARI Technical Report 783) presented the analytic rationale for determining the requirements of a device-based program for training and testing armor skills. The resulting concept indicated that it was feasible to use existing devices to train and test much of the domain of tank gunnery in an integrated fashion. However, there were gaps in the program where devices did not support substantial portions of the domain. Also, there were cases where training on basic skills and knowledges was not integrated into training on higher level skills. It was concluded that on-tank experience at both the beginning and advanced stages of training is necessary to train and test the entire domain of gunnery. This second volume of the report details the results that support the research activities described above. These detailed results are presented as a series of appendixes that support the following research activities: (a) definition of the domain of gunnery in terms of individual conditions and actions; (b) identification of gunnery performance deficiencies through an analysis of Directorate of Evaluation and Standardization (DOES) performance data, a review of the research literature, and an analysis of Table VIII performance at Grafenwohr; (c) identification of training and testing objectives through a hierarchical analysis of the gunnery domain; (d) evaluation of gunnery devices with respect to their fidelity features, instructional features, and testing features; and (e) specification of the training and testing program by a detailed listing of objectives within instructional units. Keywords: Gunnery trainers; Tank crews; Training devices; Army training. (sdw).
