Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INCREASING USE OF SOFTWARE IN SYSTEMS WHERE A FAILURE ENDANGERS HUMAN LIFE IS CREATING AN AWARENESS OF THE NEED FOR CAREFUL VERIFICATION OF THE CORRECT FUNCTIONING OF SUCH SOFTWARE. In this light, an analysis was made of the software to control a 'smart' ordnance device, by applying the MALPAS static analysis package. This report presents the results of the analysis, both as they relate to the specific software being analysed and more generally in terms of the experience and insight gained into the application of static analysis techniques to the verification of real-time software. Two significant safety related flaws were detected during the analysis, one in the software itself and the other in the specification of the device. Comparisons are also made between the findings of the analysis and currently proposed standards for writing safety-critical software. Keywords: MAIPAS computer program; Computer program verification; Electric fuzes ordnance; Computer program reliability; Safing and arming ordnance; Time delay fuzes; EXDET fuzes. Australia. (edc).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-disciplinary book conceptualizes, maps, and analyses ongoing standardization processes of risk issues across various sectors, processes, and practices. Standards are not only technical specifications and guidelines to support efficient risk governance, but also contain social, political, economic, and organizational aspects. This book presents a variety of standardization processes and applications of standards that may influence our judgements of risk, the organizing of risk governance, and, accordingly, our behaviour. Standardization and standards can impact risk governance in different ways. The most important lessons drawn from the present volume can be summarized in three areas: (1) how standardization might impact on power relations and interests; (2) how standardization may change flexibility in decision-making, communication, and cooperation; and (3) how standardization could (re)direct attention and risk perception. The volume's aim is to present an analysis of standardization processes and how it affects our thinking about risk, how we organize risk governance, and how standardization may influence risk management. In so doing, it contributes to a more informed discourse regarding the use of standards and standardization in contemporary risk management. Standardization and Risk Governance will be of great interest to students of risk, standardization, global governance, and critical security studies. Book excerpt: On the Move presents a rich history of one of the key concepts of modern life: mobility. Increasing mobility has been a constant throughout the modern era, evident in mass car ownership, plane travel, and the rise of the Internet. Typically, people have equated increasing mobility with increasing freedom. However, as Cresswell shows, while mobility has certainly increased in modern times, attempts to control and restrict mobility are just as characteristic of modernity. Through a series of fascinating historical episodes Cresswell shows how mobility and its regulation have been central to the experience of modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to describe the history of geoconservation. It draws on experience from the UK, Europe and further afield, to explore topics including: what is geoconservation; where, when and how did it start; who was responsible; and how has it differed across the world? Geological and geomorphological features, processes, sites and specimens, provide a resource of immense scientific and educational importance. They also form the foundation for the varied and spectacular landscapes that help define national and local identity as well as many of the great tourism destinations. Mankind's activities, including contributing to enhanced climate change, pose many threats to this resource: the importance of safeguarding and managing it for future generations is now widely accepted as part of sustainable development. Geoconservation is an established and growing activity across the world, with more participants and a greater profile than ever before. This volume highlights a history of challenges, set-backs, successes and visionary individuals and provides a sound basis for taking geoconservation into the future.
