Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses urban ecology, green technology, problems with climate change prediction, groundwater contamination, invasive species and many other topics, and offers a guardedly optimistic interpretation of humanity's place in nature and our unique caretaker role. Drawing upon scholarly and media sources, the author presents a common-sense analysis of environmental science, debunking eco-apocalyptic thinking along the way. Compromised science masquerading as authoritative is revealed as a fundraising and policy-influencing crusade by the environmental elite, overshadowing unambiguous problems like environmental racism.

This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alsea Logging and Aquatic Resources Study, commissioned by the Oregon Legislature in 1959, marked the beginning of four decades of research in the Pacific Northwest devoted to understanding the impacts of forest practices on water quality, water quantity, aquatic habitat, and aquatic organism popu- tions. While earlier watershed research examined changes in runoff and erosion from various land uses, this study was the first watershed experiment to focus so heavily on aquatic habitat and organism response to forest practices. The Alsea Watershed Study, as it came to be known, extended over 15 years with seven years of pretreatment calibration measurements, a year of treatment, and seven years of post-treatment monitoring. The research was a cooperative effort with scientists from Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cooperating landowners included the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, the U.S. Forest Service, and a local rancher. It was a remarkable 15-year partnership marked by excellent cooperation among the participants and outstanding coordination among the scientists, many of whom participated actively for the entire period.

Book Synopsis Timber Management and Use-value Assessment by : Paul E. Sendak
Download or read book Timber Management and Use-value Assessment written by Paul E. Sendak and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Vermont Use Value Appraisal (UVA) Forest Land Program, enrolled forest lands are taxed at their forest use value rather than their fair market value. Technical forestry aspects, including approval of a mandatory management plan, are administered by the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. Our objectives were to use data collected by the Department to estimate the annual timber harvest from lands enrolled in the UVA Tax Program and to explore relationships among management variables and harvest information for individual stands. Overall, 31 percent of UVA properties reported a commercial harvest during 1989. In total, the harvest on enrolled lands represented 18 percent and 24 percent, respectively, of the reported total sawlog and pulpwood-fuelwood harvest in Vermont in 1989, while enrolled lands represented about 16 percent of the total timberland in the State. However, there were no significant relationships among stand and harvest variables that would be useful in predicting harvesting activity. The UVA Tax Program gives the State some influence over forestry activity on privately owned timberland that it did not have prior to the Program.
