Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the complex problems faced by decision makers involve uncertainty as well as multiple conflicting objectives. This book provides a complete understanding of the types of objective functions that should be used in multiattribute decision making. By using tools such as preference, value, and utility functions, readers will learn state-of-the-art methods to analyze prospects to guide decision making and will develop a process that guarantees a defensible analysis to rationalize choices. Summarizing and distilling classical techniques and providing extensive coverage of recent advances in the field, the author offers practical guidance on how to make good decisions in the face of uncertainty. This text will appeal to graduate students and practitioners alike in systems engineering, operations research, business, management, government, climate change, energy, and healthcare.

Book Synopsis Multi-Attribute Utility Theory: Models and Assessment Procedures by : Detlof V. Winterfeldt
Download or read book Multi-Attribute Utility Theory: Models and Assessment Procedures written by Detlof V. Winterfeldt and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The article reviews multi-attribute utility theory from a measurement theoretic perspective. It describes and classifies decision situations according to three salient aspects of choice: uncertainty, time-variability, and multi-dimensionality. For each choice situation the main mathematical representations, their inter-relations and differences are discussed. Measurement theoretic tests are described which separate between multi-attribute utility models in riskless and risky time invariant choice situations. Assessment procedures are outlined to encode utility functions for the representations developed, and experimental applications of multi-attribute utility theory are briefly reviewed. (Author).

This book was released on 1973 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three procedures for constructing additive multi-attribute utility theory, (MAUT) models were tested for their differential validity: a probabilistic procedure, a simple direct rating procedure, and a modified direct rating procedure. Validation criteria were ratings and simple choices. Procedures were evaluated after an intensive training session in which subjects learned to adopt an evaluation strategy with which they felt most comfortable and which best reflected their preferences. The results of a correlational analysis indicated that MAUT can improve upon the decision maker's own unaided intuition. The probabilistic procedure was found to be the superior method for predicting simple choices between stimuli. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three projects that apply multi-attribute utility theory to contexts in which there are unique structural relationships between the attributes. In the first project, we develop an initial model for maximizing expected utility in health decisions, based on the principles of quality-adjusted life years (QALY). We then extend this model to allow for adaptation to health states. We do this by maintaining a reference level for each possible health condition being considered. A particular formulation of the utility function and reference levels allows us to compute the a priori reference-dependent expected utility for any given alternative. In the second project, we develop preference conditions for decisions made using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These conditions allow us to simplify the elicitation of preferences over spatially-defined outcomes, and are based on standard results in multi-attribute utility theory. We then apply these tools to several specific decisions, in the contexts of urban development, irrigation, nuclear accident planning, and fire coverage. In the third project, we formulate and develop utility structures that can effectively incorporate altruistic preferences. Specifically, we examine the utility implications of multiple individuals having altruistic tendencies toward one another. We explore utility structures with two altruistic individuals, and then expand our results to a more general model. The more general model can be greatly simplified by dividing the altruistic individuals up into groups, wherein the altruistic interactions are expressed at the group level. Our results can be expanded beyond altruism; they provide insight for any situation in which each individual outcome includes externalities that affect the outcomes experienced by others.

Book Synopsis A Criterion Validation of Multiattribute Utility Analysis and of a Group Communication Strategy by : Lee Cuvallier Eils

This book was released on 1978 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the use of an external criterion for validating additive utility assessments under certainty. Utilities were elicited from twenty-four groups via consensus judgment for ten hypothetical applicants for bank credit cards. The research design completely crossed two factors relevant to group utility assessment: (1) using a decomposition (MAUA) procedure or not, and (2) using a formal group communication strategy or not. The quality of each group's utility judgments was defined to be the Pearson produce-moment correlation between the group's judged utilities and utilities output from a configural (nonlinear) model used by Security Pacific National Bank in evaluating applicants for Master Charge. Group satisfaction measures were also obtained. The decomposition methodology and the group communication strategy both aided groups in making assessments that are more consistent with those of the bank model, which is based on a systematic collection and interpretation of a large amount of relevant data. Simplified procedures for obtaining weight parameters in the multi-attribute utility analysis yielded better overall utilities than more complicated ratio-estimation techniques. (Author).
