Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generalized approximate equations of motion of a cylindrical shell are developed. The long wavelength, low frequency approximation is shown to be the zero order or Flugge approximation. The characteristics of the mode dispersion spectrum are investigated as a function of frequency for the first few roots for orders zero to four, including real, imaginary and complex wave numbers. The dependence of the complex and imaginary branches on shell geometric factors of thickness and radius are presented. Comparison is made to three-dimensional elasticity analysis and to Mirsky-Herrmann theory. The change from thin to thick shell behavior for the complex branch or end modes is traced. The radial displacement conditions for various end conditions of a thin cylindrical shell are given. Expressions are also given for the various shell impedances. (Author).

Book excerpt: A solution is presented for a semi-infinite cylindrical (Timoshenko type) shell subjected to dynamic loading at one end using the method of characteristics. Explicit results are obtained for the propagation of discontinuities. These results are combined with a simple numerical procedure to obtain the solution in all regions. Numerical examples are given for an elastic and a viscoelastic material and comparisons are made to previous results concerning wave propagation in shells. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the application of viscoelastic damping materials to control vibration and noise of structures, machinery, and vehicles Active and Passive Vibration Damping is a practical guide to the application of passive as well as actively treated viscoelastic damping materials to control vibration and noise of structures, machinery and vehicles. The author — a noted expert on the topic — presents the basic principles and reviews the potential applications of passive and active vibration damping technologies. The text presents a combination of the associated physical fundamentals, governing theories and the optimal design strategies of various configurations of vibration damping treatments. The text presents the basics of various damping effective treatments such as constrained layers, shunted piezoelectric treatments, electromagnetic and shape memory fibers. Classical and new models are included as well as aspects of viscoelastic materials models that are analyzed from the experimental characterization of the material coefficients as well as their modeling. The use of smart materials to augment the vibration damping of passive treatments is pursued in depth throughout the book. This vital guide: Contains numerical examples that reinforce the understanding of the theories presented Offers an authoritative text from an internationally recognized authority and pioneer on the subject Presents, in one volume, comprehensive coverage of the topic that is not available elsewhere Presents a mix of the associated physical fundamentals, governing theories and optimal design strategies of various configurations of vibration damping treatments Written for researchers in vibration damping and research, engineers in structural dynamics and practicing engineers, Active and Passive Vibration Damping offers a hands-on resource for applying passive as well as actively treated viscoelastic damping materials to control vibration and noise of structures, machinery and vehicles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the free vibrations of graphite-epoxy laminated composite stiffened shells with cutout both in terms of the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The dynamic analysis of shell structures, which may have complex geometry and arbitrary loading and boundary conditions, is solved efficiently by the finite element method, even including cutouts in shells. The results may be readily used by practicing engineers dealing with stiffened composite shells with cutouts. Several shell forms viz. cylindrical shell, hypar shell, conoidal shell, spherical shell, saddle shell, hyperbolic paraboloidal shell and elliptic paraboloidal shell are considered in the book. The dynamic characteristics of stiffened composite shells with cutout are described in terms of the natural frequency and mode shapes. The size of the cutouts and their positions with respect to the shell centre are varied for different edge constraints of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite shells. The effects of these parametric variations on the fundamental frequencies and mode shapes are considered in detail. The information regarding the behavior of stiffened shells with cutouts for a wide spectrum of eccentricity and boundary conditions for cross ply and angle ply shells may be used as design aids for structural engineers. The book is a significant contribution to the existing literature from the point of view of both industrial importance and academic interest.
