Going to Market maps this territory for managers and scholars. The study approaches channel management as a marketing system and a key dimension of corporate strategy. Based on extensive field research on more than 50 companies, including IBM, GE, Control Data Corporation, and U.S. Steel, it considers channel issues related to sales organization, pricing, salesforce/reseller relationships, inter- and intrachannel rivalry, and gray markets. The book also discusses the historical and legal contexts for channel policies in the United States. Going to Market offers managers valuable guidance in this increasingly important aspect of competitive strategy.

Book excerpt: The modern term of segmentation in marketing and sales can be observed in markets all over the world. In many established European markets a hyper-segmentation (Perez, 2008; Berghoff, 2007) is surpassing this development already. The term of hyper-segmentation expresses the tendency of a market allocation in too many subsegments or small niches. Facing a highly competitive market environment, producers are confronted with limited or declining market shares as well as constant pressure on product prices and costs. ‘Blue Oceans’ (Kim & Mauborgne, 005), thestill unexploited markets, are the desire of any sales oriented company. Discovering these Blue Oceans is demanding and entering them requires a considerable initial funding.

Book excerpt: This book provides a rare historical analysis on the development and importance of marketing channels to Supply Chain Management (SCM) in Northern America. In particular, the book looks at the period 1850 to the present, to understand the evolution, the trends and the current status. It aims to bring back this forgotten area of research, to the mainstream marketing thought process. A general overview of developments in marketing channels will help the reader understand what changes occurred and how some of these changes impacted marketing education and practice. First, the book provides an overview of the historical background of how manufacturing and distribution evolved in the 19th century. Next, the marketing channels and supply chain networks are defined. Then the three time periods within 1850- present are covered. The book explains how supply chain has become prominent in organizations, the movement to non-store retailing and the omnichannel is discussed to focus on recent developments in distribution. Finally, developments that relate to the academic discipline and implications for the future are examined. The book concludes by describing the relationship between marketing channels and supply chain today, based on historical analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial crisis has spread around the world and no business sector has stayed untouched. With most global companies struggling to cope with the recession, companies in the Ceramics industry mainly have to adapt to their customers· preferences by manufacturing the right product and distributing through the best promotion and distributional channels. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how RAK Ceramics, the world's largest tile manufacturer adapt their distribution and promotion strategies to the shrinking local market and changing global markets. RAK Ceramics has traditionally focused on being a volume producer and allowed its distributors to handle sales and marketing in various markets across the globe but not all distributors has been able to strategically position RAK Ceramics brand to overcome the recession and presence of strong local competition. This has eventually led to RAK Ceramics brand being devaluated while affecting the sales volume. Further marketing and promotional support was provided to all distributors irrespective of sales value increasing the overhead costs. Amongst the many, one of the key dilemmas is to evaluate the distributors' performance and finding the optimum to represent RAK Ceramics brand in each territory that would increase market share and growth rate of its sales by ensuring right product mix supported with effective marketing promotion to categorize different brand categories. The shortage of project related sales has led to evaluate various retail outlets options. To exercise effective control over the distribution channels RAK Ceramics needs to partner with its distributors to form subsidiaries in key markets to beat the competition. A customer survey will help to understand their perception on products and services along with analysis of distributors through a classification system which will provide the desired results to RAK Ceramics in order to take the best strategic decisions. This will increase the global market share with high sales revenue without increasing the cost through an effective distribution network.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting Multi-Channel Distribution Right provides a comprehensive treatment of modern distribution strategy that is analytically solid, clearly written, and relevant for managers as well as MBA and executive MBA students, and the professors who train them. It covers concepts, metrics, tools, and strategic frameworks for managing distribution in physical and digital channels. Focusing on the challenges of managing multiple channels of distribution in an evolving marketplace—rather than the process of designing a distribution channel from scratch—it leans more heavily on metrics and tools and incorporates perspectives from academic research, as well as in-depth case studies from marketing and general management practice. Introduces an organizing framework of pull and push marketing for how suppliers work together with their channel partners. Integrates across physical and digital, independent and company-owned, routes to market. Maps the functions of traditional and newer intermediaries in the channel ecosystem and identifies the root causes of conflict between them. Provides tools and frameworks for how much distribution coverage is required and where. Shows how product line, pricing, trade promotions, and other channel incentives can help to coordinate multiple channels and manage conflict. Illustrates how push and pull metrics can be combined into valuable dashboards for identifying positive feedback opportunities and sustaining the channel partnership. With the help of Getting Multi-Channel Distribution Right you’ll discover how to successfully develop, execute, and adapt distribution strategy to the evolving marketplace.
