Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beethoven’s piano sonatas form one of the most important collections of works in the whole history of music. Spanning several decades of his life as a composer, the sonatas soon came to be seen as the first body of substantial serious works for piano suited to performance in large concert halls seating hundreds of people. In this comprehensive and authoritative guide, Charles Rosen places the works in context and provides an understanding of the formal principles involved in interpreting and performing this unique repertoire, covering such aspects as sonata form, phrasing, and tempo, as well as the use of pedal and trills. In the second part of his book, he looks at the sonatas individually, from the earliest works of the 1790s through the sonatas of Beethoven’s youthful popularity of the early 1800s, the subsequent years of mastery, the years of stress (1812†“1817), and the last three sonatas of the 1820s. Composed as much for private music-making as public recital, Beethoven’s sonatas have long formed a bridge between the worlds of the salon and the concert hall. For today’s audience, Rosen has written a guide that brings out the gravity, passion, and humor of these works and will enrich the appreciation of a wide range of readers, whether listeners, amateur musicians, or professional pianists. The book includes a CD of Rosen performing extracts from several of the sonatas, illustrating points made in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig van Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas are indispensable milestones in the evolution of the genre as well as the whole of piano literature. Among the compositions from his early period, his Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, “Grande Sonate Pathétique,” continues to be one of the most celebrated masterpieces of all time, remarkably overshadowing his earlier piano sonata also in C minor – Op. 10, No. 1. This research document presents a comparative analysis of the copious similarities between these two early C minor piano sonatas through a discussion of form, tonalities, temporality, gestures, and motifs. Not only do they share an overarching three-movement structure as opposed to four movements in Beethoven’s piano sonatas prior to Op. 10, No.1, they are almost identical in their progression of tonal areas and modulation schemes. Furthermore, they mirror one another’s gestural motifs of rhythm and melody, intervallic relationships, and harmonic sequences. It cannot be coincidence alone that all of these elements align at corresponding temporal points in both sonatas. Careful analyses of the scores will provide insight on this topic, and challenge the generally accepted view that Beethoven derived his ideas for his famous Pathétique from composers other than himself.

Book excerpt: Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany on 16th December, 1770 and he died in Vienna, Austria on 26th March 1827. He was a great composer, as well a distinguished pianist who composed 32 piano sonatas. One of the piano sonatas is this research topic. This research paper is written and designed for Piano Sonata No.8 in C minor, Op.13 "Pathetique" on today's Grand Piano. The objectives of this research paper are to examine the performance practice of Beethoven's early sonata on today's grand piano, to analyze the movements, to analyze the recording of pianists who played his piano sonata and whether they have interpreted it according to the score, as well to analyze which version or edition of the score is best used on today's grand piano. After completing all the objectives of this research, it can be seen which pianists manage to interpret the piano sonata according to the score and which edition of the score is best used on today's grand piano."

Book excerpt: For music analysts and performers alike, Beethoven's Tempest sonata (1802) represents one of the most challenging pieces of the classical and early romantic piano repertoire. This book is a collection of eleven essays, each dealing with this sonata from a different analytical perspective and investigating the possible connections between music analysis and the practice of performance. Under the editorship of Pieter Berge, Jeroen D'hoe and William E. Caplin, the book presents essays by Scott Burnham (hermeneutics), Poundie Burstein (Schenkerian approach), Kenneth Hamilton (history of performance), Robert Hatten (semiotics), James Hepokoski (Sonata Theory), William Kinderman (source studies), William Rothstein (tempo, rhythm, and meter), Douglas Seaton (narratology), Steven Vande Moortele (20th-century Formenlehre) and the editors themselves (motivic analysis and form-functional approach respectively).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heinrich Schenker ranks among the most important figures in the development of western music theory in the twentieth century. His approach to the analysis of music permeates nearly every aspect of the field and continues to this day to be a topic of great interest among music theorists, historians, composers and performers. In his four volume work, Die letzen Sonaten von Beethoven: Kritische Ausgabe mit Einführung und Erläuterung (The Last Piano Sonatas by Beethoven: Critical edition with Introduction and Commentary) Schenker presented editions of Beethoven's Opp. 109, 110, 111 and 101 that were, at the time, unprecedented in their faithfulness to such authoritative sources as Beethoven's autograph manuscripts. He included a movement-by-movement and section-by-section discussion of form and content that grew increasingly penetrating from one volume to the next as the musical theory for which he is now known was developed, alongside inspired and detailed suggestions for the performance of each section of each work. In Beethoven's Last Piano Sonatas: An Edition, with Elucidation, noted Schenker scholar John Rothgeb presents the first English language edition and translation of these important works. Rothgeb builds upon Schenker's text, adding explanations of certain points in the commentary, references to corrections and other remarks entered by Schenker in his personal copies of the volumes, and graphic presentations of several passages (a practice that became standard in Schenker's own analytical work later in his career). Making these seminal works accessible to English speaking scholars and students for the first time, Beethoven's Last Piano Sonatas is an essential reference for music theorists, historians, performers, and composers alike.

Book excerpt: Compiled here are reviews, reports, notes, and essays found in German-language periodicals published between 1783 and 1830. The documents are translated into English with copious notes and annotations, an introductory essay, and indexes of names, subjects, and works. This volume contains a general section and documents on specific opus numbers up to opus 54, with musical examples redrawn from the original publications. ø The collection brings to light contemporary perceptions of Beethoven?s music, including matters such as audience, setting, facilities, orchestra, instruments, and performers as well as the relationship of Beethoven?s music to theoretical and critical ideas of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These documents, most of which appear in English for the first time, present a wide spectrum of insights into the perceptions that Beethoven?s contemporaries had of his monumental music.
