Book excerpt: This volume, edited by a well-known specialist in the field of theoretical chemistry, gathers together a selection of papers on theoretical chemistry within the themes of mathematical, computational, and quantum chemistry. The authors present a rich assembly of some of the most important current research in the field of quantum chemistry in modern times. In Quantum Chemistry at the Dawn of the 21st Century, the editors aim to replicate the tradition of the fruitful Girona Workshops and Seminars, held at the University of Girona, Italy, annually for many years, which offered important scientific gatherings focusing on quantum chemistry. This volume, like the workshops, showcases a large variety of quantum chemical contributions from different points of view from some of the leading scientists in the field today. This unique volume does not pretend to provide a complete overview of quantum chemistry, but it does provide a broad set of contributions by some of the leading scientists on the field, under the expert editorship of two leaders in the field.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of the fourth International Conference on Industrial and Applied Mathematics!, we decided to organize a sequence of 4 minisymposia devoted to the mathematical aspects and the numerical aspects of Quantum Chemistry. Our goal was to bring together scientists from different communities, namely mathematicians, experts at numerical analysis and computer science, chemists, just to see whether this heterogeneous set of lecturers can produce a rather homogeneous presentation of the domain to an uninitiated audience. To the best of our knowledgde, nothing of this kind had never been tempted so far. It seemed to us that it was the good time for doing it, both . because the interest of applied mathematicians into the world of computational chemistry has exponentially increased in the past few years, and because the community of chemists feels more and more concerned with the numerical issues. Indeed, in the early years of Quantum Chemistry, the pioneers (Coulson, Mac Weeny, just to quote two of them) used to solve fundamental equations modelling toy systems which could be simply numerically handled in view of their very limited size. The true difficulty arose with the need to model larger systems while possibly taking into account their interaction with their environment. Hand calculations were no longer possible, and computing science came into the picture.

Book excerpt: Computational methods are rapidly becoming major tools of theoretical, pharmaceutical, materials, and biological chemists. Accordingly, the mathematical models and numerical analysis that underlie these methods have an increasingly important and direct role to play in the progress of many areas of chemistry. This book explores the research interface between computational chemistry and the mathematical sciences. In language that is aimed at non-specialists, it documents some prominent examples of past successful cross-fertilizations between the fields and explores the mathematical research opportunities in a broad cross-section of chemical research frontiers. It also discusses cultural differences between the two fields and makes recommendations for overcoming those differences and generally promoting this interdisciplinary work.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive account, from first principles, of the methods of numerical quantum mechanics, beginning with formulations and fundamental postulates. The development continues with that of the Hamiltonian and angular momentum operators, and with methods of approximating the solutions of the Schroedinger equation with variational and perturbation methods.Chapter 3 is a description of the Hartree-Fock self-consistent field method, which is developed systematically for atoms. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation is introduced, and the numerical methods presented one by one thereafter in a logically consistent way that should be accessible to undergraduates. These include LCAO, Hartree-Fock-SCF method for molecules, Roothaan LCAO-MO-SCF method, and electron correlation energy.Chapter 4 is devoted to the more sophisticated computational methods in quantum chemistry, with an introduction to topics that include: the zero differential overlap approximation; Huckel MO theory of conjugated molecules; Pariser-Parr-Pople MO method; extended Huckel theory; neglect of differential overlap methods; invariance in space requirements; CNDO; INDO; NDDO; MINDO; MNDO; AM1; MNDO-PM3; SAM1; SINDO1; CNDO/S; PCILO,Xα; and ab initio methods. This is followed by an introduction to Moller-Plesset perturbation theory of many electrons, and coupled perturbed Hartree Fock theory, with a description of the coupled cluster method. Finally Chapter 5 applies these methods to problems of contemporary interest. The book is designed to be a junior/senior level text in computational quantum mechanics, suitable for undergraduates and graduates in chemistry, physics, computer science, and associated disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Quantization-Based Methods in Quantum Chemistry presents several modern quantum chemical tools that are being applied to electronic states of atoms and molecules. Organized into six chapters, the book emphasizes the quantum chemical methods whose developments and implementations have been presented in the language of second quantization. The opening chapter of the book examines the representation of the electronic Hamiltonian, other quantum-mechanical operators, and state vectors in the second-quantization language. This chapter also describes the unitary transformations among orthonormal orbitals in an especially convenient manner. In subsequent chapters, various tools of second quantization are used to describe many approximation techniques, such as Hartree-Fock, perturbation theory, configuration interaction, multiconfigurational Hartree-Fock, cluster methods, and Green’s function. This book is an invaluable source for researchers in quantum chemistry and for graduate-level students who have already taken introductory courses that cover the fundamentals of quantum mechanics through the Hartree-Fock method as applied to atoms and molecules.

In an instructional and nonmathematical style, these books provide an access to computational methods often outside a researcher's area of expertise. Volumes 9 & 10 represent the next two volumes in the successful series designed to help the chemistry community keep current with the many new developments in computational techniques. Many chapters are written as tutorials to introduce the many facets of computational chemistry, including molecular modeling, computer-assisted molecular design (CAMD), quantum chemistry, molecular mechanics and dynamics, and quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). The authors provide necessary background and theory, strategies for implementing the methods, pitfalls to avoid, applications, and references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-war generation of chemists learned to handle a blow pipe at the university as thoroughly as modern chemistry students learn to write computer programmes. Even after World War II the rule of three was considered to be sufficient mathematical knowledge for chemists and the short course of "higher mathematics" at technical universities was the test most feared by chemistry students. However, even then some en visaged the theoretical derivation of information on the properties of molecules from knowledge of the bonding of the component atoms. During the last quarter of this century, amazing changes have occurred in chemistry, some of them almost incredible. Dirac's famous clairvoyant statement* has been partially realized. Incorporation of quantum mechanics into chemistry encountered numerous difficulties. After all, the reserve of experimental chemists is not surprising. For decades the hydrogen and helium atoms and the hydrogen molecule belonged among the systems most frequently investigated by theoreti cians. Later these systems were supplemented by ethylene and benzene. The authors of this book can therefore recall with understanding the words of the late Professor Lukes: "Well, when they succeed in computing a molecule of some alkaloid by those methods of yours ... ". Unfortunately, the calculations on calycanin were not completed before his death. Now there is no need to convince even the members of the older generation of the usefulness of quantum chemistry for chemists. Even the most conservative were convinced after the introduction of the W ood ward-Hoffmann rules.

Book excerpt: Algebraic Methods in Quantum Chemistry and Physics provides straightforward presentations of selected topics in theoretical chemistry and physics, including Lie algebras and their applications, harmonic oscillators, bilinear oscillators, perturbation theory, numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation, and parameterizations of the time-evolution operator. The mathematical tools described in this book are presented in a manner that clearly illustrates their application to problems arising in theoretical chemistry and physics. The application techniques are carefully explained with step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow, and the results are organized to facilitate both manual and numerical calculations. Algebraic Methods in Quantum Chemistry and Physics demonstrates how to obtain useful analytical results with elementary algebra and calculus and an understanding of basic quantum chemistry and physics.
