Primarily, I wrote it for the English people. I composed it in their country; it was suggested by their institutions, and it is addressed to them. You will see, if you read it, that I had reasons for doing this. The reasons are in the first chapter, at the very beginning. As you have not far to look for them, therefore, and as it is quite unnecessary to print a thing twice in the same book, I will not go over them again. The object of this preface is chiefly to draw your attention to the fact that I am not talking to you, dear compatriot, so that you will nu derstand that there is no personal ground for any annoyance you may feel at what I say. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Girl In the lives of the great mass of girls no dra matic changes of circumstances or fortune ever come; but they are doing all sorts of useful things beyond their obvious duty of being decent to their parents and, later, good wives and mothers. All over the country, in the big cities, small towns and even villages the American girl (perhaps she is young and perhaps she is middle aged) is working gratuitously for the health, beauty and general welfare of her community. She is a leader in work for children, in modern charity and in movements for civic improvement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Campaigns of Curiosity, 1894: Journalistic Adventures of an American Girl in London When, a little over a year ago, I arrived in London with a star-spangled banner in my pocket, I had no intention of remaining long enough to make any extensive experiments in the line of the "newer journalism." I had only "taken a run" over to England to visit Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's, and the Tower, expecting then to return home and write up my "impressions" of London and Londoners. "Don't forget that you are an American, and are going to England simply to compare the inferiorities of that country with the superiorities of your own." This was the parting injunction of a certain American editor when I left New York. For some time after my arrival I not only never forgot that I was an American, but I took particular pains that nobody else should forget it. I waved the Stars and Stripes on every possible occasion, and sighed for an opportunity to defend my country. It was not long in coming, for I had been in London but a little over two weeks when Mr. Rudyard Kipling's criticisms of America appeared in the Times. My patriotic outburst, which I headed "An American Girl's Reply to Mr. Kipling," was printed in the same paper a few days later, and Uncle Sam sent me his congratulations across the water. That was the beginning of my journalistic career in London - a career that has not been without its pleasures as well as some very hard work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great American Girls There was a time when men were timid and girls were bold, - oh long, long ago - when apples grew on cherry trees and grapes on rose bushes. At that time the Sky was green and the grass was blue and men and women were rich and happy and told only untrue stories because they were so true. That was a Day of Dreams in a Dream-world, and one of the loveliest ladies in it cannot be called by name because she had no name, but was only a Story Teller. She knew much about many gallant girls in many countries and in all ages, some Of whose hands she had only clasped in dreams, but of whose lives she could speak, and others of whom She could tell the truly untrue tales which She felt to be true. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jane Hudson the American Girl, or Exert Yourself This lively and useful narrative was written for the young people of the United States of America. It contains several references to customs and manners which differ from those of England; but these appear suited to enforce the important lesson of the book - the duty of exerting ourselves in fulfilling the duties of life.
