Book excerpt: This volume is a newly revised and expanded version of An American Abbot, the biography of Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., published twenty years ago by the Archabbey Press. In preparing the new edition, Jerome Oetgen has thoroughly reexamined the primary sources, added material from additional sources, and taken into account the results of scholarly research on American Catholic and Benedictine history published since 1976. The achievement of Boniface Wimmer, the father of the Benedictine presence in the United States, has been generally underestimated in the history of American Catholicism. Modern historians of the Catholic Church in the United States have tended to neglect the story of Catholicism on the American rural frontier where between 1830 and 1860 the majority of the 1.5 million German immigrants settled. It was chiefly to serve these farm-bound immigrants that Wimmer came to America in 1846, and for the next forty years, as his evangelization efforts expanded to include Irish, African Americans, Native Americans, and immigrants from eastern Europe, he consistently exhibited the traditional Benedictine preference to establish monasteries and religious centers in farming regions and to work among the people of the countryside rather than those of the cities. In his own lifetime Wimmer was widely esteemed both by the American hierarchy for his distinguished pastoral work and by European ecclesiastical and monastic leaders for the crucial role he played in the nineteenth-century revival and development of Benedictine monasticism. Though his work may not have brought him to center stage in the American Catholic Church, he was nonetheless one of the key supporting actors. This biography assesses his part and lasting importance. Jerome Oetgen is a U.S. foreign service officer currently on assignment as director of the Fulbright Exchange Program for Latin America and the Caribbean at the United States Information Agency in Washington, D.C. He has published numerous articles on the history of the American Benedictines. ""This work of nonfiction contains several of the key ingredients of a classic adventure story. . . . The serious student of American religion cannot afford to ignore this biography.""--The Heythrop Journal ""Oetgen has rewritten our understanding of the founder of American monasticism, creating in the process a work of enduring value. . . .""-Dom Paschal Baumstein, O.S.B., Belmont Abbey College ""No one who is interested in the history of religion in America or in the fortunes of this venerable Benedictine order will want to overlook this fine work.""-Demetrius R. Dumm, O.S.B., Saint Vincent Archabbey ""This revised edition is filled with new information. . . . Wimmer, dedicated, single minded, stubborn, made history. Oetgen has done a commendable job of writing it.""-Prof. David J. O'Brien, College of the Holy Cross ""Oetgen has written a revised and expanded version of the unique historical record of Boniface Wimmer. In doing so, he gives the reader an even deeper appreciation of Wimmer's role as monastic pioneer in the context of nineteenth-century American Catholicism.""-F. Joel Rippinger, O.S.B., Marmion Abbey ""Every so often a figure comes along who captures the spirit of the times and is able to use that insight to spread the gospel. Boniface Wimmer did just that.""-Rembert G. Weakland, O.S.B., Archbishop of Milwaukee Table of Contents: Foreword by Demetrius Dumm, OSB Preface to the Revised Edition Preface to the 1976 Edition Introduction by Colman J. Barry, OSB 1. Book excerpt: The biggest challenge of the twenty-first century is to bring the effects of public life into relation with the intractable problem of global atmospheric change. Climate and the Picturesque in the American Tropics explains how we came to think of the climate as something abstract and remote rather than a force that actively shapes our existence. The book argues that this separation between climate and sensibility predates the rise of modern climatology and has deep roots in the era of colonial expansion, when the American tropics were transformed into the economic supplier for Euro-American empires. The book shows how the writings of American travellers in the Caribbean registered and pushed forward this new understanding of the climate in a pivotal period in modern history, roughly between 1770 and 1860, which was fraught with debates over slavery, environmental destruction, and colonialism. Offering novel readings of authors including J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, Leonora Sansay, William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Sophia Peabody, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and James McCune Smith in light of their engagements with the American tropics, this book shows that these authors drew on a climatic epistemology that fused science and sentiment in ways that citizen science is aspiring to do today. By suggesting a new genealogy of modern climate thinking, Climate and the Picturesque in the American Tropics thus highlights the urgency of revisiting received ideas of tropicality deeply ingrained in American culture that continue to inform current debates on climate debt and justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An archive of never-before-published illustrations of insects and plants painted by a pioneering naturalist During his lifetime (1751–ca. 1840), English-born naturalist and artist John Abbot rendered more than 4,000 natural history illustrations and profoundly influenced North American entomology, as he documented many species in the New World long before they were scientifically described. For sixty-five years, Abbot worked in Georgia to advance knowledge of the flora and fauna of the American South by sending superbly mounted specimens and exquisitely detailed illustrations of insects, birds, butterflies, and moths, on commission, to collectors and scientists all over the world. Between 1816 and 1818, Abbot completed 104 drawings of insects on their native plants for English naturalist and patron William Swainson (1789–1855). Both Abbot and Swainson were artists, naturalists, and collectors during a time when natural history and the sciences flourished. Separated by nearly forty years in age, Abbot and Swainson were members of the same international communities and correspondence networks upon which the study of nature was based during this period. The relationship between these two men—who never met in person—is explored in John Abbot and William Swainson: Art, Science, and Commerce in Nineteenth-Century Natural History Illustration. This volume also showcases, for the first time, the complete set of original, full-color illustrations discovered in 1977 in the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington, New Zealand. Originally intended as a companion to an earlier survey of insects from Georgia, the newly rediscovered Turnbull manuscript presents beetles, grasshoppers, butterflies, moths, and a wasp. Most of the insects are pictured with the flowering plants upon which Abbot thought them to feed. Abbot’s journal annotations about the habits and biology of each species are also included, as are nomenclature updates for the insect taxa. Today, the Turnbull drawings illuminate the complex array of personal and professional concerns that informed the field of natural history in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These illustrations are also treasured artifacts from times past, their far-flung travels revealing a world being reshaped by the forces of global commerce and information exchange even then. The shared project of John Abbot and William Swainson is now brought to completion, signaling the beginning of a new phase of its significance for modern readers and scholars.
