The book describes in vivid detail the magical techniques used by settlers and the assumptions which underlaid them. Godbeer argues that layfolk were generally far less consistent in their beliefs and actions than their ministers would have liked; even church members sometimes turned to magic. The Devil's Dominion reveals that the relationship between magical and religious belief was complex and ambivalent: some members of the community rejected magic altogether, but others did not. Godbeer argues that the controversy surrounding astrological prediction in early New England paralleled clerical condemnation of magical practice, and that the different perspectives on witchcraft engendered by magical tradition and Puritan doctrine often caused confusion and disagreement when New Englanders sought legal punishment of witches.

The aim has been to present the work so as to attain logical sequence, to make it progressively more difficult, and to give the various subjects the relative prominence which their scientific and educational importance deserves. In short, the aim has been to prepare such a book that one who has had the necessary mathematical training may obtain from it in a relatively short time and by the easiest steps a sufficiently broad and just view of the whole subject to enable him to stop with much of real value in his possession, or to pursue to the best advantage any particular portion he may choose. In carrying out the plan of this work it has been necessary to give an introduction to the Problem of Three Bodies. This is not only one of the justly celebrated problems of Celestial Mechanics, but it has become of special interest in recent times through the researches of Hill, Poincare, and Darwin. The theory of absolute perturbations is the central subject in mathematical Astronomy, and such a work as this would be inexcusably deficient if it did not give this theory a prominent place. A chapter has been devoted to geometrical considerations on perturbations. Although these methods are of almost no use in computing, yet they furnish in a simple manner a clear insight into the nature of the problem, and are of the highest value to beginners. The fundamental principles of the analytical methods have been given with considerable completeness, but many of the details in developing the formulas have been omitted in order that the size of the book might not defeat the object for which it has been prepared. The theory of orbits has not been given the unduly prominent position which it has occupied in this country, doubtless due to the influence of Watson's excellent treatise on this subject. The method of treatment has been to state all problems in advance and, where the transformations are long, to give an outline of the steps which are to be made. Book excerpt: This book is a historical-epistemological study of one of the most consequential breakthroughs in the history of celestial mechanics: Robert Hooke's (1635-1703) proposal to "compoun[d] the celestial motions of the planets of a direct motion by the tangent & an attractive motion towards a centrat body" (Newton, The Correspondence li, 297. Henceforth: Correspondence). This is the challenge Hooke presented to Isaac Newton (1642-1727) in a short but intense correspondence in the winter of 1679-80, which set Newton on course for his 1687 Principia, transforming the very concept of "the planetary heavens" in the process (Herivel, 301: De Motu, Version III). 1 It is difficult to overstate the novelty of Hooke 's Programme • The celestial motions, it suggested, those proverbial symbols of stability and immutability, werein fact a process of continuous change: a deflection of the planets from original rectilinear paths by "a centraU attractive power" (Correspondence, li, 313). There was nothing necessary or essential in the shape of planetary orbits. Already known to be "not circular nor concentricall" (ibid. ), Hooke claimed that these apparently closed "curve Line[ s ]" should be understood and calculated as mere effects of rectilinear motions and rectilinear attraction. And as Newton was quick to realize, this also implied that "the planets neither move exactly in ellipse nor revolve twice in the same orbit, so that there are as many orbits to a planet as it has revolutions" (Herivel, 301: De Motu, Version III).
