Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior Airman Teresa Conklin had it all - beauty, intelligence, and zealous ambition. As a young cop stationed at Winburg Air Base in Germany, Conklin seized the opportunity to further her career in the United States Air Force. But two bullets end her life, and the ensuing investigation unearths a disturbingly complex web of deceit, sex, and betrayal. Major Emma Lohrs, an attorney with the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG), is assigned to the case. The details surrounding Conklin's murder create a twisted scenario, especially since Conklin was on duty in the well-secured base armory when she was killed. But Lohrs soon uncovers a number of bizarre clues about the victim and the chief suspects, two of whom are well-respected, decorated leaders on base. To complicate matters, Lohrs also has to deal with Special Agent Eric Myers, an egotistical military agent whose contempt for the JAG attorney is only too evident. Forced to work together, Lohrs and Myers discover Conklin's involvement in a sexual love triangle, infi delity, and blackmail. But senior offi cials block their every move in a desperate attempt to hide the appalling truth. With the situation growing deadlier by the minute, Lohrs and Myers must put their hostile feelings aside long enough to solve the murder before someone else ends up dead...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vivid Air recreates the story of the famed Lafayette Escadrille, the American volunteer unit which fought with the French during World War I. A unique and elite squadron since its inception, the unit was destined for world renown even before it flew its first mission. Their role as the "vanguard of American volunteers" and the remarkably high caliber of the Lafayette Escadrille pilots easily set them apart and ignited the admiration of the world. The idealized glamour of aviation in the Great War, a direct consequence of the grim, heroless contest on the ground, highlighted combat flying and gave pilots a special place in the public imagination. Yet when the war came to its tragic end, widespread appreciation for crusading idealism lay buried in the ruins, and with it the true story of the Lafayette Escadrille. Philip Flammer's clear, fully documented study is the first complete scholarly account of this singular volunteer fighting unit, based on extensive research in Europe and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This candid WWI memoir takes readers inside the cockpit with an RAF officer on the Western Front from the outbreak the Great War until its end in 1918. Louis Arbon Strange was at the Royal Air Force’s Central Flying School when war broke out in 1914. He immediately reported to Royal Flying Corps headquarters and joined No. 5 Squadron. Strange remained on active duty throughout the war, serving his country over the Western Front from August of that year until the enemy’s surrender. Strange transferred to No. 6 Squadron in 1915 and went on to form and command No. 23 Squadron. Due to illness, he did not accompany his squadron to France, but spent that time training others. He took charge of the Machine-Gun School at Hythe and other schools of aerial gunnery before returning to the Front. There he commanded the 23rd Wing and finally took command of the 80th Wing from June 1918 until the end of the war. As Strange chronicles his experiences, he provides unique insight into how and why the Allied airmen eventually prevailed.

Book excerpt: “From the training camps to the combat missions, this is war from the perspective of the young Americans who lived through it: the pilots, the bombardiers, the navigators, and the gunners of all the combat services in both Europe and in the Pacific. It is an engaging and vivid portrayal of war in the skies from 1941 to 1945.”—Craig L. Symonds, Author of World War II at Sea John C. McManus, author of The Dead and Those About to Die and September Hope, reveals the terror and triumph that shared the fiery skies of World War II—from the first dogfights over Europe to the last Kamikaze attacks over the Pacific. This insightful chronicle takes readers inside the experiences of America’s fighter pilots and bomber crews, an incredible assortment of men who, in nearly four years of warfare all over the globe, suffered over 120,000 casualties with over 40,000 killed. Their stories span the earth into every corner of the combat theaters in both Europe and the Pacific. And the aircraft explored are as varied, tough, and legendary as the men who flew them—from the indomitable heavy-duty warhorse that was the B-17 Flying Fortress to the sleek, lethal P-51 Mustang fighter. In Deadly Sky, master historian John C. McManus goes beyond the familiar tales of aerial heroism, capturing the sights and sounds, the toil and fear, the adrenaline and the pain of the American airmen who faced death with every mission. In this important, thoroughly-researched work, McManus uncovers the true nature of fighting—and dying—in the skies over World War II.
