It had two rooms, and it sat by the side of a small lake that supplied us with water and fish. We also had two boys, Frank and Harry. They were the pride of our family, fun loving and hard working. I loved them with all my heart. We worked as trappers, going deep into the woods to set our traps. When we caught something, we would, skin the animal, carry in their furs, and stretch and tan the furs to make them ready to sell. It was hard word, but I enjoyed it. During the summer and winter, we had several adventures in the trapping and killing of wild animals. One of them was of such a dangerous kind, that you might be interested in hearing it. Find out what happens when two young boys are suddenly attacked by a hungry pack of wolves. Can they outrun the bloodthirsty pack in time to save their lives? Find out in this book. Ages 8 and up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am a retired captain of the upper sea. That is to say, when I was a younger man I was a balloonist. Naturally it is a hazardous profession, and naturally I have had many thrilling experiences. The most thrilling, or at least the most nerve-racking, is the one I am about to tell you. Before you can understand what happened, I must first explain a bit about the nature of the hot air balloon that is used for parachute jumping. If you have ever witnessed such a jump, you will remember that as soon as the parachute was cut loose the balloon turned upside down. It emptied itself of its smoke and heated air, flattened out and fell straight down, beating the parachute to the ground. Thus there is no chasing a big deserted bag for miles and miles across the country, saving much time, as well as trouble. This maneuver is accomplished by attaching a weight, at the end of a long rope, to the top of the balloon. The aeronaut, with his parachute and trapeze, hangs from the bottom of the balloon. His weight keeps it right side down. When he jumps, the weight attached to the top immediately drags the top down. The bottom, which is the open mouth, goes up, and the heated air pours out. The weight used for this purpose on the “Little Nassau” was a bag of sand. Imagine my horror, when I discovered a child hanging from the bag at 100 feet above the ground! Find out what happens to the child in this 15-minute adventure! Ages 8 and up. Educational Versions Include exercises designed to meet Common Core Standards. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1862, we were living in the State of Minnesota. There I had a most remarkable experience. We lived about a mile from the town of Lac Qui Parle. There were only three of us—father, mother, and myself. My name is Susanna. We had moved to Minnesota three years before. My parents moved to restore their health; for they were feeble and needed a change of climate. The first year, both father and mother were much better; but not long after, father began to fail. One day the sky was cloudy, and it looked as if a storm was coming. Since it was dark and blustering, we remained inside the rest of the evening. A fine drizzling rain began to fall, and the darkness was intense. It was getting late and father was reading to us, when there came a rap upon the door. It was so gentle and timid that it sounded like the pecking of a bird. We all looked at the door, uncertain what it meant. “It is a bird, scared by the storm,” said father, “and we may as well let it in.” I sat much nearer the door than either of my parents, so I jumped up and opened it. As I did so, I looked out into the gloom. Suddenly I sprung back with a cry of alarm. “What's the matter?” asked father. He quickly dropped the book and came toward me. “It isn't a bird; it's a person.” As I spoke, a little Indian girl, about my own age, walked into the room. Find out what the little girl is doing out in a storm, and how she saves the lives of the settlers a short time later. Ages 8 and up. Book excerpt: This true story happened in the month of February, 1831. It was a bright moonlit night, and it was extremely cold. The little brig I commanded lay quietly at her anchors inside the bay. When at length we made the port, all hands were almost exhausted. We could not have held out two days longer without relief. The bay we nestled in was welcome relief and we planned to shelter there for a number of days. “A bitter cold night, Mr. Larkin,” I said to my mate. I paused for a moment on deck to finish my pipe and I watched the water. The tide was running out so strong that the force of it would break off cakes of ice from the mass at the shore and swiftly carry them out toward the sea beyond. These cakes filled the bay and could be dangerous if they scraped the side of the boat too hard in passing. “The tide is running out swift and strong,” I added. “It will be well to keep a sharp look-out for this floating ice, Mr. Larkin.” “Ay, ay, sir,” answered the mate, and I went below. Two hours afterwards, I was aroused from a sound sleep by that same officer. “Excuse me for disturbing you, captain,” said he, as I glared at him. “I wish you would turn out, and come on deck as soon as possible.” “Why—what's the matter, Mr. Larkin?” “Why, sir, I have been watching a cake of ice that swept by at a little distance a moment ago. I saw something black upon it—something that I thought moved.” Find out what Mr. Larkin saw and how he and the captain rescued two small children from a floating cake of ice in this exciting adventure tale. Book excerpt: Through film we can visit an experimental classroom, share the anguish of a child going to a hospital, or observe an innovative day care center in operation. There are many possibilities in the film medium and these possibilities are sensed by children who, more and more, are being drawn to film as a means of expressing their feelings about the world around them. In various parts of the country, film classes have sprung up in schools and workshops where some young filmmakers are no more than 5 years old. We now have films produced all over the world for children which, along with the story books their parents have traditionally read to them, open up a world of wonder. At The 1970 White House Conference on Children we have brought together many outstanding films; films a:bout the problems of children, films which children have made themselves, and an international selection of short entertainment films. We hope that the films will not only open new doors of interest and excitement for the Conference participants but also point out new avenues of care and concern for the children of the seventies.

Book excerpt: When all seems lost, where can you find hope? Katherine and Jay Wolf married right after college and sought adventure far from home in Los Angeles, CA. As they pursued their dreams--she as a model and he as a lawyer--they planted their lives in the city and their church community. Their son, James, came along unexpectedly in the fall of 2007, and just six months later, everything changed in a moment for this young family. On April 21, 2008, as James slept in the other room, Katherine collapsed, suffering a massive brain stem stroke without warning. Miraculously, Jay came home in time and called for help. Katherine was immediately rushed into brain surgery, though her chance of survival was slim. As the sun rose the next morning, the surgeon proclaimed that Katherine had survived the removal of part of her brain, though her future recovery was uncertain. Yet in that moment, there was a spark of hope. Through forty days on life support in the ICU and nearly two years in full-time brain rehab, that small spark of hope was fanned into flame. Hope Heals documents Katherine and Jay's journey as they struggled to regain Katherine's quality of life and as she relearned to talk, eat, and walk. As Katherine returned home with a severely disabled body but a completely renewed purpose, she and Jay committed to celebrating this gift of a second chance by embracing life fully, even though that life looked very different than they could have ever imagined. As you uncover Katherine and Jay's remarkable story, you'll be encouraged to: Find lasting hope in the midst of struggle Embrace the unexpected Welcome God's miracles into your everyday life In the midst of continuing hardships, both in body and mind, Katherine and Jay found what we all long to find: a hope that heals the most broken place--our souls. Let Hope Heals be your guide along the way. Praise for Hope Heals: "As I read this book, tears streamed from my eyes even as joy flooded my heart. Jay and Katherine are a raw yet refreshing testimony to the unshakable trustworthiness of God amidst the unimaginable trials of life. This book reminds all of us where hope can be found in a world where none of us know what the next day holds." --David Platt, author of the New York Times bestseller Radical and president of the International Mission Board "Hope Heals is a beautiful, true story that illustrates the love and protection God has for us even in the darkest times of our lives. Katherine and Jay's dedication to each other and the Lord through their most devastating season is inspiring. This book will help your heart believe that He sees, He knows, He cares, and He is still working miracles today!" --Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times bestselling author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries
