Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it really like to be a teacher today? Teaching--The Imperiled Profession goes beyond conventional analyses, to probe the profession and various threats to its viability. Daniel L. Duke has drawn on his own and current educational research--including surveys of teacher opinion, interviews with teachers, and press coverage of educational issues--to uncover and examine a complex array of factors that contribute to the troubled state of the profession and the unprecedented discouragement of its practitioners. The book also analyzes traditional sources of support. Teaching--The Imperiled Profession provides prospective teachers with a realistic picture of the profession today. It identifies a set of concerns on which citizens might reasonably focus attention, in order to forestall any future deterioration. It provides the educator, administrator, and policy-maker with a comprehensive set of recommendations for revitalizing the profession. The book also serves as a concise history of the teaching profession as it has developed in the United States during the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: This report develops a strategy for improving national and state forecasts of future teacher attrition rates. The authors (1) develop a theory of teacher attrition that accounts for the disparate reasons for attrition and explains the patterns of attrition unique to each life cycle and career stage; (2) selectively review existing literature on teacher attrition and present attrition patterns from several states in order to test hypotheses deriving from their theory; (3) review the data available to support improved attrition models and recommend ways to make better use of the data; and (4) identify sampling and data collection strategies that will improve the value of data collected in a future national survey of teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Recently, many state governments have legislated reductions in teachers' retirement benefits for new and future employees as a means of addressing the large unfunded liabilities of their pension plans. However, there is little existing capacity to predict how these unprecedented pension reforms — and, more broadly, changes to teacher compensation — will affect teacher turnover and teacher experience mix, which, in turn, could affect the cost and efficacy of the public education system. This research develops a modeling capability to begin filling that gap. The authors develop and estimate a stochastic dynamic programming model to analyze the relationship between compensation, including retirement benefits, and retention over the career of Chicago public school teachers. The structural modeling approach used was first developed at RAND for the purpose of studying the relationship between military compensation and the retention of military personnel and is called the dynamic retention model, or DRM. Although the peer-reviewed literature on teachers includes research on retirement benefits and the timing of retirement, the research does not model compensation and retention over the length of the career from entry to exit (into retirement or an alternative career), and it has limited capability to predict the effect of compensation and retirement benefit changes on retention. By comparison, the DRM is well suited to these tasks, and the DRM specification developed here for Chicago teachers fits their career retention profile well"--Back cover.
