Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero In drawing the characters of a number of persons who all lived in the same city at the same time, trained by the same discipline, and engaged in the same pursuits; as there must be many similar strokes, and a general resemblance in them all, so the chief difficulty will be to prevent them from running into too great an uniformity. This I have endeavoured to do, not by forming ideal pictures, or such as would please or surprise; but by attending to the particular facts which history has delivered of the men, and tracing them to their source, or to those correspondent affections from which they derived their birth; for these are the distinguishing features of the several persons, which, when duly represented, and placed in their proper light, will not fail to exhibit that precise difference in which the peculiarity of each character consists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero: Being a New Translation of the Letters Included in Mr. Watson's Selection; With Historical and Critical Notes And to almost any reasoning and reasonable narrative of Cicero's life I should attach the highest value, irrespective of the conclusions it led to. There is no other classical work to be compared to his Letters for teaching that the Romans were real living men and women, and not mere paper characters, or school masters' puppets. The time in which he lived, too, was to us almost the central time of the world's history; and there were giants on the earth in those days. Moreover, the often noticed parallel of Cicero's age with our own, though strained by Mr. Froude beyond what it will bear,1 is yet at once plausible and penetrating, and gives to the story of this age an interest and value not resting entirely on the skill of the narrator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 2 of 2 During this and the following year we have very few of Cicero's letters, which is explained by the fact that Atticus, his chief correspondent, was then at Rome. Atticus had made a journey into Greece and Asia Minor in the previous summer, but re turned in November, and the friends were together for the next two years. And as this work is not a history of Rome, but a biography of Cicero, and he took during the period little part in public affairs, we may pass rapidly over events with which he was not immediately concerned. In their selection the guiding principle has been to have the student form a clear picture, well rounded, of Cicero, not only as a man in public life, but also in his private relations to family and friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 2 Creako's return was what he himself truly calls it, tbe beginning of a new life to him which was to be governed by new maxims, and a new kind of policy, yet so as not to forfeit his old character. He had been made to feel in what hands the weight of power lay, and what little dependence was to be placed on the help and support of his aristocratical friends: Pom pey had served him on this important occasion very sincerely, and with the concurrence also of Cesar, so as to make it a point of gratitude, as well as prudence, to be more observant of them than he had hitherto been. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Life in the Days of Cicero: Sketches Drawn From His Letters and Speeches Life of Cicero, a work full of sound sense, though curiously deficient in scholarship. The publishers and myself hope that the illustrations, giving as there is good reason to believe they do the veritable likenesses of some of the chief actors in the scenes described, will have a special interest. It is not till we come down to comparatively recent times that we find art again lending the same aid to the understanding of history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero: With His Treatises on Friendship and Old Age As to the dramatis persone. In the treatise on Old Age, which I dedicated to you, I introduced Cato as chief speaker. NO one, I thought, could with greater propriety speak on old age than one who had been an Old man longer than any one else, and had been exceptionally vigorous in his Old age. Similarly, having learnt from tradition that of all friend ships that between Gaius Laelius and Publius Scipio was the most remarkable, I thought Laelius was just the person to support the chief part in a discussion on friendship which Scaevola remembered him to have actually taken. Moreover, a discussion Of this sort gains somehow in weight from the authority of men of ancient days, especially if they happen to have been distinguished. SO it comes about that in reading over what I have myself written I have a feeling at times that it is actually Cato that is speaking, not I. Finally, as I sent the former essay to you as a gift from one Old man to another, so I have dedicated this On Friend ship as a most affectionate friend to his friend. In the for mer Cato spoke, who was the Oldest and wisest man of his day; in this Laelius speaks on friendship - Laelius, who was at once a wise man (that was the title given him) and emi nent for his famous friendship. Please forget me for a while; imagine Laelius to be speaking. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Life at Rome: In the Age of Cicero Apart from this correspondence and the other literature of the time, my mainstay throughout has been the Privatleben der RĂ©mer of Marquardt, which forms the last portion of the great Handbuch der R'o'mischen Altertn'mcr of Mommsen and Mar quardt. My debt is great also to Professors Tyrrell and Purser, whose labours have provided us with a text of Cicero's letters which we can use with confidence; the citations from these letters have all been verified in the new Oxford text edited by Professor Purser. One other name I must mention With gratitude. I firmly believe that the one great hope for classical learning and education lies in the interest which the unlearned public may be brought to feel in ancient life and thought. We have just lost the veteran French scholar who did more perhaps to create and maintain such an interest than any man of his time; and I gladly here acknowledge that it was Boissier's Cice'ron et ses amis that in my younger days made me first feel the reality of life and character in an age of which I then hardly knew anything but the perplexing political history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cicero Select Letters To meet the demand for a brief volume of Cicero's letters, to be read in connection with Cicero's orations, the present selection of letters has been prepared and edited in accord with d'ooge's Select Orations of Cicero. While, in view of their purpose, the choice of selections has been limited to the easiest 'and plainest letters, yet the list will be found sufficiently extensive to include illustration of Cicero's most salient personal traits and many of the most prominent phases of his career. Owing to the close connection between this book and Professor d'ooge's Cicero, it has seemed necessary to include in the vocabulary only those words which do not appear in his vocabulary to the Orations. As these words appear for the first time in the text they are marked with a star to show that they have been 'placed in the vocabulary of this book. Tullius Cicero, Vol. 1: Arranged According to Its Chronological Order; With a Revision of the Text, a Commentary, and Introductory Essays on the Life of Cicero, and the Style of His Letters In preparing the present edition I have gone carefully over the whole book, paying special attention to the kind and instructive remarks of the critics of the first edition. Several notes have been re-written, and most of my statements examined anew. In the work of examination and verification I have received much assistance from my friend Mr. Purser. Since the appearance of my first volume, the criticism of the Epp. ad Fam, has passed into quite a new phase. The admirable monograph of Thurot on the codex Turonensis has proved its independence of M; and the paper of Fr. Ruhl in the Rheinisches Museum has called attention to the value of the Harleian codices in the British Museum. These Harleian codices Mr. Purser has collated. I have introduced into the Adnotatio Critica of this volume a complete account of the tradition of H and T (which are described in Introd. iii. 1). It will be observed, however, that this volume contains very few of the letters ad Familiares. The succeeding volumes will present a full account of the readings of these important mss, which have not yet been used by any editors of the letters. The Introduction to vol. ii. will also, I trust, contain a full description of the Harleian codices. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of Cicero IN editing these selections from Cicero's correspondence, I have attempted to meet the needs of the Freshman who, when he enters college, is suffering from indifferent teaching. This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. The selections which appear in this book were made with a view to throwing light upon Cicero's habits and character, and upon the life in which he moved. Although this basis of choice coincides with that adopted by practically all recent editors, yet there are several letters presented here which are not found in the editions in general use at the present time.
