Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Morisonian Herbarium in the Possession of the University of Oxford Together With Biographical and Critical Sketches of Morison, and the Two Bobarts and Their Works, and the Early History of the Physic Garden 1619-1720 The description of the botanical collections of the University of Oxford, which was begun with the volume on the herbaria of Dillenius published in 1907, is here continued with an account of the still more ancient herbarium of Morison, who was the first Professor of Botany in the University (1669-83), and of Jacob Bobart the younger. It would be altogether incomplete without some notice of the distinguished men who formed it; or without some reference to the early history of the Garden with which the herbarium is intimately associated. The Physic Garden. The first suggestion of the formation of such a garden is the following entry in Anthony Wood's History and Antiquities of the University of Oxford (ed. Gutch, 1796), vol. ii, Annals, p. 335: {Dom. 1620. {18 Jacobi. Saville's Benefaction being in a manner setled, motions were made for the founding of a Natural Philosophy Lecture, as also a Garden for Physical Simples. Which being kindly embraced by the University, care was taken for their settlement soon after, as it shall be elsewhere showed. Indefinite though this statement is, effective means must have been taken to realize the suggestion as regards the Garden, for in the following year a founder was forthcoming in the person of Henry Lord Danvers, who in his youth had been at Christ Church, and had subsequently served with distinction in both the army and the navy. Probably the idea commended itself to him because he had seen academic Physic Gardens in the course of his travels abroad; and he put it into execution when he was residing at Combury Park as Ranger of the Royal Forest of Wychwood. He secured a plot of land, about five acres in extent, which formed part of what was known in early times as 'Paris Meade'. Book excerpt: Since 1621, and the foundation of the Oxford Botanic Garden, Oxford has built up an outstanding collection of plant specimens, botanical illustrations and rare books on plant classification, collecting and plant biology. These archives, and the living plants in the Garden, are integral to the study of botany in the University. This book profiles the botanists and collections which have helped to transform our understanding of the biology of plants over the past four centuries, focusing on plant classification, experimental botany, building botanical collections, agriculture and forestry and botanical education. Highlights include a selection of Ferdinand Bauer's renowned illustrations for Flora Graeca - an extraordinarily lavish and detailed eighteenth-century botanical publication of plants found in the Eastern Mediterranean - and rare plant specimens from the herbaria, such as Fairchild's Mule (the first artificially created hybrid plant). Together with seventeenth-century herbals, elegant garden plans, plant models and fossil slides, these items from the archives all help to tell the story of botanical science in Oxford and the intrepid botanists who devoted themselves to the essential study of plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1712, English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683–1749) crossed the Atlantic to Virginia. After a seven-year stay, he returned to England with paintings of plants and animals he had studied. They sufficiently impressed other naturalists that in 1722 several Fellows of the Royal Society sponsored his return to North America. There Catesby cataloged the flora and fauna of the Carolinas and the Bahamas by gathering seeds and specimens, compiling notes, and making watercolor sketches. Going home to England after five years, he began the twenty-year task of writing, etching, and publishing his monumental The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Mark Catesby was a man of exceptional courage and determination combined with insatiable curiosity and multiple talents. Nevertheless no portrait of him is known. The international contributors to this volume review Catesby’s biography alongside the historical and scientific significance of his work. Ultimately, this lavishly illustrated volume advances knowledge of Catesby’s explorations, collections, artwork, and publications in order to reassess his importance within the pantheon of early naturalists.
