Book excerpt: From the doomed attempt to seize the Russian guns by the Light Brigade at Balaclava, to the Siege of Sebastopol itself, artillery played a major part in the Crimean War. This official history of the Royal Artillery Regiment in the conflict is therefore indispensible to a full picture of the war. Colonel Jocelyn's detailed account of operations opens with a description of the Regiment's organisation on the eve of the war, and discusses the changes brought about by the experience. Part II of the book deals with the military operations themseves, opening with the Battle of the Alma, the start of the protracted Siege of Sebastopol, the chaotic Battle of Balaclava and the bloody Battle of Inkerman. Although an official history, the author is unsparing in his criticism of errors when they occur. Each section of the book is accompanied by appendixes listing the forces, guns and officers present at each encounter. In addition there are 71 tables, 41 engravings, and ten maps."...Essential reading for a general view of the war as well as the details of the key part played by the artillery" Major Colin Robins

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life story of Richard Ramsay Armstrong, RN, 1833 - 1910. 3 years on the Coast of Africa for suppression of the slave trade. Then the Crimea, and 6 months with the Naval Brigade. He survived cholera but was wounded 5 times. Back at home the doctors thought he would die. Instead, he emigrated to NZ, to try farming. It didn't work out, so, he went to be a planter in Fiji. This failed, but he had to survive many hazards: a hurricane wiped him out. Then he was the official at Lord Howe Is. He became the thorn in the side of speculators who got his dismissal on trumped up charges. Back in Australia several schemes failed to make his fortune. He never mentions his family and though he fathered 6 children, he always seems to have been off on some project, giving the impression of a poor family man! This is confirmed by his wife's occasional diary which is included after his work. There are extensive footnotes and a substantial appendix examining some of Armstrong's stories in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 18 June 1855, the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, British assault troops moved out of their trenches before Sebastopol in the Crimea, and attacked the formidable Russian bastion known as the Great Redan. They came under such a murderous fire from the Russian defenders that the attack faltered, and the British were eventually forced to fall back. As they did so, they left over 1,000 comrades dead and dying out in the open and at the mercy of enemy snipers. The Siege of Sebastopol saw the development of trench warfare for the first time. Using eyewitness accounts and unpublished letters, the author tells the story of how the men coped with the terrible conditions as they prepared for the assault – as well as the events during and after the fighting. Among the anecdotes is an officer who had the ingenious idea of warming up cannon balls in the camp fires and taking them into the tents at night to keep warm; and he went on to live for over a hundred years! Well-known for his depth of research, the author questions a number of points regarding the Great Redan that are commonly believed to be historical fact. Quoting the father of Alexander the Great, it was the Russians who, soon after the assault on the Great Redan, first referred to the British as, ‘An army of lions led on by donkeys’. For over 100 years it was stated in many publications that the most Victoria Crosses awarded for a single action was the eleven presented for actions during the defense of Rorke’s Drift during the Zulu War in 1879. However, as the author reveals, twenty of the lions who fought at the Great Redan received Britain’s highest gallantry award, in whole, or in part, for their actions on 18 June 1855. The book includes biographical tributes to many of the men who were killed in action, gives details of the places where they are commemorated, and provides biographies with all the up-to-date information concerning the twenty Victoria Cross recipients.
