Download or read book Shock Waves: Measuring The Dynamic Response Of Materials written by William M Isbell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-01-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents, in a concise and comprehensive manner, the essential techniques by which shock wave physicists probe the boundaries of material response to impulsive loads. The author is a well-known figure in shock wave physics, having worked for over forty years with many of the outstanding researchers in the field. The book acquaints readers both with modern instrumentation techniques including interferometers such as the DISAR and the VISAR — and with methods that have been established by previous generations of experimentalists — including acoustic measurement techniques and low to moderate strain rate machines.Besides an exposition of the theoretical aspects of shock wave phenomena, it contains large amounts of data on equations of state, spallation thresholds, shock wave attenuation from very high pressures, and elastic constants. Much of this information has been previously unavailable in open publications. The text documents the transition from testing performed with explosives to the use of modern compressed gas guns, which permit much more detailed diagnostics and controlled conditions. In particular, the author pioneered the use of two-stage light gas guns which launch high-density plates against specimens located at the muzzle. The high launch velocity of these guns produced data that represents the highest pressures obtained in the free world at that time./a

Book Synopsis High-Velocity Impact Phenomena by : Ray Kinslow
Download or read book High-Velocity Impact Phenomena written by Ray Kinslow and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-Velocity Impact Phenomena covers a wide range of pertinent topics dealing with impact phenomena. The book discusses hypervelocity accelerators; stress wave propagation in solids; and the theory of impact. The text also describes the application of the theory of impact on thin targets and shields and correlation with experiment; the numerical evaluation of hypervelocity impact phenomena; and analytical studies of impact-generated shock propagation. The equation of state of solids from shock wave studies; metallurgical observations and energy partitioning; and engineering considerations in hypervelocity impact are also encompassed. Design engineers will find the book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Temperature Aspects of Hypersonic Flow is a record of the proceedings of the AGARD-NATO Specialists' Meeting, held at the Technical Centre for Experimental Aerodynamics, Rhode-Saint-Genese, Belgium in April 1962. The book contains the papers presented during the meeting that tackled a broad range of topics in the aspects of hypersonic flow. The subjects covered during the meeting include pressure measurements, interference effects, the use of wind tunnels in aircraft development testing, high temperature gas characteristics, boundary layer research, stability and control and the use of rocket vehicles in flight research. Aerospace engineers and aeronautical engineers will find the book invaluable.

Book Synopsis Measurements of Radiation from the Flow Fields of Bodies Flying at Speeds Up to 13.4 Kilometers Per Second by : Thomas N. Canning
Download or read book Measurements of Radiation from the Flow Fields of Bodies Flying at Speeds Up to 13.4 Kilometers Per Second written by Thomas N. Canning and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The radiation from hot air is discussed in qualitative terms of the physical and chemical processes responsible. The effects of electronic excitation, dissociation, ionization, and subsequent recombination are described. It is emphasized that the reaction rates for the above processes may be so low that important departures from thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium may exist in important regions of the flow fields of vehicles entering the atmosphere upon return from the moon. The integrated effects of these sources of radiation are deduced from photometric measurements of the radiation from the shock layers of small bodies fired from light-gas guns. The test velocity range extended to 13.4 kilmometers per second through air of widely varied density. The variation of total radiated power is presented as a function of free-stream density and at velocities of 6.1, 9.1, and 12.5 kilometers per second. Reasonable agreement with calculations for equilibrium flow at free-stream densities above 0.04 standard atmosphere is shown. At lower densities the radiation exceeds greatly that calculated because of non-equlibrium effects in the shock layer. The application of these data at low densities to the estimation of radiative heating in full-scale flight is discussed. The measurements of radiation presented for wavelengths greater than about 0.5 micron disclose important radiation from the hot model surface and ablated materials from plastic models. Ablation of the model surface appears to control the amount of radiation emitted from the wake to an even greater extent."--p.i.

Book Synopsis Technology of Lunar Exploration by : Clifford Cumming
Download or read book Technology of Lunar Exploration written by Clifford Cumming and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1006 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 10: Technology of Lunar Exploration is an overview of the technical base of the lunar exploration problem. This volume is organized into six sections encompassing 35 that follow the various stages of accomplishment of a lunar mission, involving landing on or orbiting the moon and returning to the earth. The first section is devoted to the problem of trying to define the lunar environment, emphasizing the theories of the lunar environment as it relates to the internal structure of the moon. This section also describes some activities to achieve a reasonable theory concerning what might be encountered in some of the previous lunar flight programs. The second section explores the problems associated with the limitations imposed upon lunar missions by the launch vehicles and launching facilities. The third section looks at the spacecraft systems and techniques required for lunar missions, particularly the technology and specific subsystems in relation to the requirements imposed by specific lunar mission objectives. The fourth section deals with the actual landing on the moon and the subsequent surface operations, while the fifth section covers the lunar launch, return, flight re-entry, and subsequent landing on earth. The sixth section reports the status of the projects that represent the United States lunar exploration program, which integrates the technologies developed in the preceding sections into certain discrete projects.
