Book Synopsis Amyloid Protein Precursor in Development, Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease by : C.L. Masters
Download or read book Amyloid Protein Precursor in Development, Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease written by C.L. Masters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the last ten years' research on Alzheimer's disease. Genetic mutations in the gene which codes for amyloid precursor protein (APP) have now been shown to cause Alzheimer's disease in some families. Other genetic loci are now being discovered which relate to Alzheimer's disease in some families. Understanding the normal structure and function of the APP gene product will eventually provide avenues for developing specific therapeutic strategies targeted at the amyloid deposition in the Alzheimer's disease brain. Drugs which can inhibit or dissolve the amyloid, affect the synthesis and proteolysis of APP, or which regulate the activity of the APP gene all hold the promise of eventually yielding an effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

Download or read book Amyloidosis written by J. Marrink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a gift from the international community of amyloid friends, presented to Professor Dr. Enno Mandema on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. It is the "precipitation" of up to date knowledge of amyloidosis, as presented at the International Course on Amyloidosis in Groningen, on the 10th and 11th of October 1986. Twenty years ago, Professor Mandema invited a group of scientists, who were studying the various aspects of amyloidosis from different points of view, to discuss their mutual interest in the subject. This "First International Symposium" was held for five days in September 1967. It was a wonderful experience for the participants, as most of them had until then only read each others work in the literature. The proceedings of that symposium, which contained the "lively" dis cussions, became a text-book for the following years. Research continued, and while the book was still in preparation, the revolutionary method of "water-soluble amyloid" was published. In the following years, different amyloid proteins were discovered and the mo lecular basis of the different amyloid syndromes was elucidated. The increase in knowledge parallelled the availability of modern, ingenious and also rapid methods in the biomedical sciences.

Book Synopsis Protein Aggregation and Fibrillogenesis in Cerebral and Systemic Amyloid Disease by : J. Robin Harris
Download or read book Protein Aggregation and Fibrillogenesis in Cerebral and Systemic Amyloid Disease written by J. Robin Harris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Subcellular Biochemistry series is the result of the long-standing research interest of the editor in the molecular mechanism underlying Alzheimer’s disease and other amyloid diseases, indicated also by the earlier book in the series (Volume 38), devoted to Alzheimer’s disease. The broad coverage within the present amyloidogenesis book represents an attempt to collate current knowledge relating to the proteins and peptides involved in most of the known amyloid diseases, together with some amyloid/fibril-forming proteins and peptides that are not involved in diseases. Thus, the range of topics included is comprehensive and furthermore it was thought appropriate to include both basic science and clinical presentation of the subjects under discussion.
Book Synopsis From Globular Proteins to Amyloids by : Irena Roterman-Konieczna
Download or read book From Globular Proteins to Amyloids written by Irena Roterman-Konieczna and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Globular Proteins to Amyloids proposes a model and mechanism for explaining protein misfolding. Concepts presented are based on a model originally intended to show how proteins attain their native conformations. This model is quantitative in nature and founded upon arguments derived from information theory. It facilitates prediction and simulation of the amyloid fibrillation process, also identifying the progressive changes that occur in native proteins that lead to the emergence of amyloid aggregations. Introduces basic rules for protein folding, along with the conditions that result in misfolding Presents research that lies in treating the aqueous environment as a continuum rather than a set of individual water molecules (i.e. the classic representation) Provides practical applications for helping the prevention of amyloidosis and improving drug design

Book Synopsis Alzheimer's Disease: Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Amyloid beta by : J. Robin Harris
Download or read book Alzheimer's Disease: Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Amyloid beta written by J. Robin Harris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the major thrusts of present-day clinical research, strongly supported by more fimdamental cellular, biochemical, immunological and structural studies. It is these latter that receive attention within this book. This compilation of 20 chapters indicates the diversity of work currently in progress and summarizes the current state of knowledge. Experienced authors who are scientifically active in their fields of study have been selected as contributors to this book, in an attempt to present a reasonably complete survey of the field. Inevitably, some exciting topics for one reason or another have not been included, for which we can only apologize. Standardization of terminology is often a problem in science, not least in the Alzheimer field; editorial effort has been made to achieve standardization between the Chapters, but some minor yet acceptable personal / author variation is still present, i. e. P-amyloid/amyloid-P; Ap42/Apl-42/APi. 42! The book commences with a broad survey of the contribution that the range of available microscopical techniques has made to the study of Alzheimer's amyloid plaques and amyloid fibrillogenesis. This chapter also serves as an Introduction to the book, since several of the topics introduced here are expanded upon in later chapters. Also, it is significant to the presence of this chapter that the initial discovery of brain plaques, by Alois Alzheimer, utilized light microscopy, a technique that continues to be extremely valuable in present-day AD research.
Book Synopsis Lipids in Protein Misfolding by : Olga Gursky
Download or read book Lipids in Protein Misfolding written by Olga Gursky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protein conversion from a water-soluble native conformation to the insoluble aggregates and fibrils, which can deposit in amyloid plaques, underlies more than 20 human diseases, representing a major public health problem and a scientific challenge. Such a conversion is called protein misfolding. Protein misfolding can also involve errors in the topology of the folded proteins and their assembly in lipid membranes. Lipids are found in nearly all amyloid deposits in vivo, and can critically influence protein misfolding in vitro and in vivo in many different ways. This book focuses on recent advances in our understanding of the role of lipids in modulating the misfolding of various proteins. The main emphasis is on the basic biophysical studies that address molecular basis of protein misfolding and amyloid formation, and the role of lipids in this complex process.
