Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amusements in Mathematics In-issuing this new volume Of my Mathematical Puzzles, Of which some have appeared in the periodical press and others are given here for the first time, I must acknowledge the encouragement that I have received from many unknown correspondents, at home and abroad, who have expressed a desire to have the problems in a collected form, with some Of the solutions given at greater length than is possible in magazines and newspapers. Though I have included a few Old puzzles that have interested the world for generations, where I felt that there was something new to be said about them, the problems are in the main original. It is true that some Of these have become widely known through the press, and it is possible that the reader may be glad to know their source. Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Henry Ernest Dudeney (April 10, 1857 - April 23, 1930) was an English author and mathematician specializing in logical puzzles and mathematical games. He is known as one of the country's leading mathematical puzzle creators. Dudeney was born in the town of Mayfield, East Sussex, England, one of the six children of Gilbert and Lucy Dudeney. His grandfather, John Dudeney, was known as a self-taught mathematician and pastor; His initiative was greatly admired by his grandson. Dudeney learned to play chess at an early age, and continued to play frequently throughout his life. This led to a marked interest in mathematics and puzzle composition. Chess problems in particular fascinated him during his early years. Although Dudeney spent his career in the Civil Service, he continued to brainstorm various problems and puzzles.Dudeney's first contributions were newspaper and magazine appearances, often under the pseudonym "Sphinx." Much of this previous work was a collaboration with the American puzzle Sam Loyd; in 1890, they published a series of articles in the weekly English penny Tit-Bits. Dudeney later contributed puzzles under his real name to publications like The Weekly Dispatch, The Queen, Blighty, and Cassell's Magazine.

It has ranged from the common sorts of brain teasers such as mazes, arithmetic story problems, and simple geometric puzzles to sophisticated explorations of questions that still concern modern mathematical theorists. This new dictionary provides a tantalizing variety of paradoxes, games, problems, and puzzles that will appeal to mathematics enthusiasts at every level of proficiency. Eiss introduces his subject with an overview of the history of recreational mathematics and its relation to some theoretical questions that have occupied mathematicians for centuries. Dictionary entries include problems posed by particular thinkers as well as traditional puzzlers that have come down to us anonymously. Information on the origins and history of many of the activities is supplied, and thorough cross-referencing enables the reader to locate all puzzles, games, and amusements of a similar type. Book excerpt: Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games columns in Scientific American inspired and entertained several generations of mathematicians and scientists. Gardner in his crystal-clear prose illuminated corners of mathematics, especially recreational mathematics, that most people had no idea existed. His playful spirit and inquisitive nature invite the reader into an exploration of beautiful mathematical ideas along with him. These columns were both a revelation and a gift when he wrote them; no one--before Gardner--had written about mathematics like this. They continue to be a marvel. This is the original 1983 edition and contains columns published from 1970-1972. It includes three columns on the game of Life.

Rouse Ball For nearly a century, this sparkling classic has provided stimulating hours of entertainment to the mathematically inclined. The problems posed here often involve fundamental mathematical methods and notions, but their chief appeal is their capacity to tease and delight. In these pages you will find scores of "recreations" to amuse you and to challenge your problem-solving faculties-often to the limit. Now in its 13th edition, Mathematical Recreations and Essays has been thoroughly revised and updated over the decades since its first publication in 1892. This latest edition retains all the remarkable character of the original, but the terminology and treatment of some problems have been updated and new material has been added. Among the challenges in store for you: Arithmetical and geometrical recreations; Polyhedra; Chess-board recreations; Magic squares; Map-coloring problems; Unicursal problems; Cryptography and cryptanalysis; Calculating prodigies; ... and more. You'll even find problems which mathematical ingenuity can solve but the computer cannot. No knowledge of calculus or analytic geometry is necessary to enjoy these games and puzzles. With basic mathematical skills and the desire to meet a challenge you can put yourself to the test and win.
